“With every moment we wait, someone else's mother dies! I won't give Jormag a few days! I won't give Jormag a few minutes!
— Braham
Braham Eirsson (born 1309 AE)[1] is a young norn guardian from Cragstead who relies heavily on the teachings of Wolf. He is the son of Eir Stegalkin and Borje the Sun Chaser.
After cracking the Fang of the Serpent, Braham begins his journey as the Norn of Prophecy who is destined to either slay or fall to the Elder Dragon Jormag.[2] To fulfill the prophecy, he becomes the leading champion of Primordus. He is restored to normal after the deaths of Jormag and Primordus. |
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
Braham was born in 1309[1], but his mother, Eir Stegalkin, thought it best to leave and pursue her legend. Braham's father, Borje the Sun Chaser, agreed with her and promised to look after Braham. Eir left, and Borje took the infant Braham to Cragstead, a norn settlement in the northeast corner of the Wayfarer Foothills, north of Hoelbrak and close to Ascalon. Braham grew up there, not knowing that Eir was his mother until Borje told him on his deathbed, when Braham was seven (1316 AE). Borje also requested that Eir not be told of his death, lest she abandon her legend because of him. This all led Braham to have a form of resentment for Eir.[3] After his father's death, Braham was raised at Rugnar's Steading by friends of his and Borje's, Yngvi Rugnar and Brynhildr the Mother Bear, and he became a devout follower of the Spirit of Wolf, though he was never able to Become the Wolf as other norn did.
Braham had over a dozen friends,[4] among them Haslo and Ornan. At some point, Braham developed a crush on a norn named Ottilia.
Living World Season 1[edit]
In early 1326 AE, when Braham was seventeen, Cragstead was attacked by Flame Legion charr and dredge. The Cragsteaders, who had been given no warning, fought back ferociously, but the strongest were killed in the first wave. The elders and children were sent up the mountain, and it was presumably at this point that Braham, being the only one able and willing, went for aid. The others, including Braham's friend Ornan, chose to stay and keep fighting. Braham went east and south to the Black Citadel, which was closer than Hoelbrak, and managed to speak to Rytlock Brimstone, requesting his help personally on the basis that he was Eir Stegalkin's son. Rytlock turned him down, having no resources due to his own refugees and additionally believing Braham to be a liar. Braham was left with no recourse but to go to Hoelbrak and speak to Knut Whitebear - something he said he was reluctant to do because of his poor relationship with Eir. But his people were in danger, so he went. Knut and Eir turned him down, explaining that Hoelbrak was dealing with a large increase in refugees and could not also send aid to Cragstead. They added that those who were smart would come find refuge in Hoelbrak, but Braham told them his people were fierce and fighting, not fleeing - fighting and dying. This made no difference; Knut said he could spare no one. Only after exhausting every option did Braham leave in anger, preparing to head back toward Cragstead to do what he could by himself.
Braham was no fool, though; he sent out a call for adventurers and hunters to help him take down the Molten Alliance attacking his home. Among those who showed up was the Pact Commander, and together they discovered that Cragstead had been overtaken by the Flame Legion and dredge attackers. The Commander and the others who had shown up helped Braham retake Cragstead, and then press on into a nearby cave, defeating the invading force and rescuing some of the 'steaders. They told Braham that the dredge had been transporting prisoners to an unknown location, and among them was Ottilia, Braham's crush. Despite this, Braham remained levelheaded and did what he could for the 'steaders he had rescued - making sure they were okay and trying to keep the situation under control. Braham eventually returned to Hoelbrak to inform Knut Whitebear about what had happened, saying if they'd stood together, fewer would have died, and coming to the conclusion that it was every hunter for himself. Eir objected to this analysis, saying it wasn't that simple, but Braham was angry and didn't agree with her. Afterward, Braham expressed his thanks to the Commander and told them how much it meant to him that they helped him when he was a complete stranger.
The Vigil arrived in the area and started figuring out what was going on, calling the union between the Flame Legion and the dredge the Molten Alliance, which had been attacking other norn and charr settlements throughout Wayfarer Foothills and Diessa Plateau. Once their first outpost - called a Molten Facility - was discovered, Braham sent word to the Pact Commander and joined with the Vigil forces to neutralize the facility. While waiting for the Commander, he met a charr gladium named Rox who was also eager to fight the Molten Alliance. Once inside the facility, they ran into dredge and Flame Legion who were testing weapons on prisoners - some of whom were Braham's friends. After clearing the outpost, Rox suggested blowing the facility up despite her fear of explosives, and they managed to get most of the prisoners out alive. There were six of these Molten Facilities, including one just west of Cragstead in Solitude Vale, and Rox and Braham, along with the Pact Commander and Vigil support, tackled all of them and parted as friends.
However, Ottilia hadn't been found at any of the facilities, and Braham went looking for her until he eventually found her in Hoelbrak and brought her back to Cragstead. At first, Ottilia seemed to have her own crush on Braham for bringing her back from Hoelbrak, although she didn't seem to understand why they'd come back to Cragstead when it was still mostly in ruins. But Braham, along with others who had lost their homes, were working hard to rebuild Cragstead, and Braham turned it into a haven for the other refugees who had lost their homes. Over the next two months, their relationship progressed only slightly - Ottilia asked Braham out to hunt rabbits with her, but Braham was still awkward and stumbled over his words - but eventually Braham mustered his courage and asked her out to take gifts to Wolf's shrine. Ottilia turned him down, saying she'd already done so, and Braham tried a different tactic, whereupon Ottilia told him she wasn't interested because he wasn't on the path to making any sort of living or a legend, and Ebbe the fur trader was, plus he traveled a lot and Braham just stayed in Cragstead. Having explained the situation to Braham, Ottilia began openly making plans with Ebbe to travel to Hoelbrak.
Angered and hurt by being rejected, Braham welcomed Rox's appearance a few weeks later, and Rox decided to invite Braham to come to the human Queen's Jubilee, hoping that some bashing at the new gladiatorial arena in Divinity's Reach would make him feel better. While there, they ran into the Commander, and attended the Opening Ceremony together. Braham provided friendly teasing and commentary while Rox attempted to maintain good charr-human relations, and jumped to aid Countess Anise when a Suspicious Figure sabotaged the new Watchknights and when Aetherblades appeared. Later, Braham convinced Rox to help out further and maybe figure out what was going on, but nothing of note happened for the duration of the celebration, during which Braham bashed Watchknights in duels to his heart's content...
Until the Closing Ceremony, when the suspicious figure revealed herself to be Scarlet and took over the Watchknights. Rox and Braham helped defend against these while the Seraph gathered civilians at an evacuation point and the Commander went around deactivating the bombs Scarlet had planted. Scarlet barricaded herself inside the Crown Pavilion, but Braham and Rox managed to fight their way in to her. She escaped before she could be defeated, but Braham and Rox focused on rescuing her captives (including Lord Faren. Braham commented that this much destruction was unusual for a sylvari.
Braham and Rox later learned of the mysterious Tower of Nightmares appearing in Kessex Hills and went to investigate. While fighting against the Toxic Alliance, they met Marjory Delaqua and Kasmeer Meade, who had been assisting the Commander before, for the first time. They ultimately brought the tower down but learned that Scarlet had been behind this alliance as well.
When Scarlet Briar tested her Twisted Marionette in Lornar's Pass, the asura progeny Taimi became attached to Braham. Once the marionette had been dealt with, the united adventuring groups began trying to figure out what Scarlet's seemingly random actions and alliances were aiming for.
While in Lion's Arch, Braham was forced to pursue Taimi into the Edge of the Mists after Captain Mai Trin's breakout and slowly bonded with her.
Braham participated in the Battle for Lion's Arch alongside Rox, focusing on evacuating civilians in the northern section of the city. After the miasma was cleared out, Braham and others fought Scarlet on The Breachmaker and persued her into the airship's core. During the final confrontaiton with Scarlet, he fell into her last trap and broke his leg. Despite her death, Scarlet succeeded in her mission as The Breachmaker drilled into the ley lines underneath Lion's Arch and redirected them west to the Heart of Maguuma, feeding the Elder Dragon Mordremoth and awakening it. As it woke, the Elder Dragon roared which was heared across Tyria, and by all in Lion's Arch.
Living World Season 2[edit]
Following the death of Scarlet, Braham joined Rox, Marjory, Kasmeer, and Taimi in the fundraiser festival hosted by Divinity's Reach and the Zephyrites as one last relaxation before heading west to investigate the dragon's roar.
Braham grouped up again with Rox, Taimi, Marjory, Kasmeer and the Pact Commander to look into disturbances in the Brisban Wildlands which led them into the Maguuma Wastes and the Zephyrites' airships that had crashed there.
In the weeks following the discovery of Scarlet's room in the Town of Prosperity, the town was destroyed by vines and mordrem, confirming the Elder Dragon's awakening.
Braham also assisted the Commander with gathering the racial leaders of the five races. The Commander took on a mission to disrupt the Sons of Svanir, to gain favour with Knut Whitebear with Eir acting as a liaison. Braham and Eir had a brief moment in the Shiverpeaks, assisting the Commander.
Braham participated in the World Summit in the Grove where the leaders of the five races convened to discuss the threat posed by Mordremoth. The summit came under attacked by the Mordrem led by the Shadow of the Dragon, however, and Braham assisted in evacuating the leaders while the Commander and the Pale Tree faced the dragon champion by themselves.
Braham met with the Commander at Camp Resolve and shared a brief conversation with them about the Commander's choice of order. He then chose to remain behind and look after Taimi while she spoke with Brun Ingotspitter about upgrading Scruffy.
Following the information they had gathered, the party tracked down the Master of Peace and learned of Glint's Egg which was then taken by Caithe.
The party eventually tracked Caithe down, and learned that the Elder Dragon Mordremoth was the cause of the recent events, but were interrupted by Mordremoth's champion, the Shadow of the Dragon. While the group was able to finally kill the beast, Caithe escaped again, which resulted in Braham's decision to hurry back before the Pact fleet left to attack Mordremoth to try to talk to Destiny's Edge about Caithe.
Heart of Thorns[edit]
- Act I
Braham joined the Pact Commander's party and entered Verdant Brink. He witnessed the aftermath of the destruction of the Pact fleet at the hands of Mordremoth and became focused with finding Eir. He was eventually reunited with Eir after assisting the Pact Commander's party in freeing her and other prisoners who had been captured by the Mordrem and Mordrem Guard for transportation. The party was separated from the prisoners soon after, however, and rushed to their side while witnessing a Mordrem Vinetooth ambush them. During their escape attempt, Eir's fellow prisoner Faolain stabbed her in order to ensure her own survival and left Eir to the Vinetooth, only to be injured herself by Eir in turn. The party arrived too late to prevent Eir from being pierced by one Vinetooth while Faolain was taken by another Vinetooth. In the resulting battle they defeated the remaining Vinetooth but could not save Eir who succumbed to her injuries.
Braham and Rox stayed behind to look after Eir's body while the rest of the party moved deeper into the jungle to locate other missing prisoners and the elusive Caithe who was still in possession of Glint's egg. To prevent the Mordrem from using Eir's corpse to create more Mordrem, the pair buried her.
- Act II
Braham and Rox eventually regrouped with the Commander and others as they prepared to leave Auric Basin. Braham shaved his head, took Eir's Longbow, and vowed to take down Mordremoth who had been responsible for his mother's death. He agreed to look for Rata Novus, so long as it led to killing Mordremoth.[5]
- Act III
- Act IV
Throughout the party's time in the Heart of Maguuma, Braham was focused but impatient to move against Mordremoth. On the way to the Jungle Dragon, they successfully rescued Logan and Zojja from Mordrem Pods and fought against the transformed Faolain, ultimately defeating her and avenging Eir.
Upon entering Mordremoth's sanctum deep within the Heart of Thorns tree, the party found Trahearne who was in the process of being fused to Mordremoth. While talking with Trahearne, the Commander realized that their best chance of defeating the Jungle Dragon, who had expanded its roots too far to be purged via traditional means, could be killed if they took the fight to its mind that resided in the Dream of Dreams. Braham volunteered to enter the Elder Dragon's mind alongside the Commander who was given the choice to either take Braham to the Dream of Dreams or leave him behind to protect the prone bodies of those who entered the Dream.
If Braham was chosen, he was forced to confront a Mordrem imitation of his mother, Blighted Eir Stegalkin, but prevailed over it with the Commander's help and later returned the favor by assisting the Commander in weakening the bipedal avatar of Mordremoth's mind in the final confrontation. If Braham was not chosen and stayed behind, Mordremoth tried to break the Commander's will by summoning a Blighted Braham Eirsson in the final battle, making it seem as if Braham had succumbed to the Mordrem in the waking world, only for the Commander to turn the illusion against its master.
After defeating Mordremoth in the Dream, the party returned to the waking world only to learn from Trahearne that one last seed of Mordremoth's hateful conciousness lingered within his mind. Trahearne pleaded the Commander to end his life with the broken sword Caladbolg before Mordremoth would regain its strength, and the party witnessed the Elder Dragon possess Trahearne and threaten them all before the Commander pierced Trahearne with the sword and ended both the Pact Marshal and Mordremoth for good.
The party survived the resulting explosion of magic and withdrew higher up the Heart of Thorns tree where they exchanged words of their bittersweet victory over the Jungle Dragon. During his conversation with the Commander, Braham expressed interest in taking the fight to the Elder Dragon Jormag next. Having avenged his mother by assisting in Mordremoth's fall, he believed that he had to take up Eir's mantle and fight alongside the Commander until all the Elder Dragons were dead. Braham saw their party as a good guild and looked forward to future adventures, parting with the Commander on good terms.
Living World Season 3[edit]
After Mordremoth's demise, Braham briefly returned to Hoelbrak and helped to organize a memorial service for Eir in 1329 AE. He left before the memorial began, however, heading into the surrounding Shiverpeaks to slay icebrood and keep himself occupied. During this time, he discovered that Jormag had become active and sent a warning to Taimi.[6]
Afterward, Braham heard about an ancient jotun scroll similar to the one that the famous norn hero Asgeir Dragonrender had once held, and left to search for it. He intended to use the scroll to enchant Eir's longbow with fire powerful enough to counteract Jormag's ice and tracked it down to the Bitterfrost Frontier. Rox, Garm and the Pact Commander eventually caught up with Braham and learned that, despite seemingly having come to terms with losing Eir upon avenging her in the Maguuma campaign, he had not taken his mother's death very well and had become cold and bitter in the months he had spent alone in the Shiverpeaks. Braham made his changed views clear: he had come to believe that the Commander's careful approach during the Maguuma campaign had not only caused Eir's death but that the Commander had dishonored Eir's legacy by having formed a new guild called Dragon's Watch instead of continuing under Destiny's Edge.
Braham discovered the jotun scroll in the Wayward Cave, but his recklessness nearly got Rox killed when a trap was sprung, leading to Rox being frozen while an enraged ice beast was released. Despite these setbacks, Braham was successful in retrieving the scroll and enchanting Eir's bow with it, using the now improved longbow to fell the ice beast. After Rox was thawed, Braham appeared indifferent to her near death experience and instead continued accusing the Commander. Growing frustrated, he ordered Garm to follow him, left the Commander and Rox on poor terms, and headed to Hoelbrak where he managed to crack the Fang of the Serpent and fulfilled the norn prophecy.
- Interim months
Following his success with the tooth, Braham made plans to rally the norn who celebrated him and take the fight to Jormag. During this time, he formed his own guild and named it Destiny's Edge to honor Eir's memory. Rox followed Braham to Hoelbrak and managed to convince him to instead take a scouting party north to assess the situation first before mobilizing a larger force, while the Commander was busy dealing with threats elsewhere.[7]
Braham and his guild eventually tracked down and surrounded Jormag, only to witness the Elder Dragon suddenly roaring in anguish and returning to the ice much to their confusion. Braham suspected that the Commander had had something to do with this turn of events and wrote a letter to Taimi inquiring about the matter. The norn had put Braham under pressure to kill Jormag, and he felt he had to live up to Eir's legend and could no longer back down.[8] After Braham had failed to fulfill his promise of killing Jormag, some norn began calling him Braham Vowbreaker. Ashamed of his failure, Braham left the rest of his Destiny's Edge guild members behind in Bjora Marches and headed back to Hoelbrak with Garm and Rox to think on his next move, and Garm retired.
Path of Fire[edit]
While the Pact Commander headed for the Crystal Desert to stop the rogue god Balthazar from killing the Elder Dragon Kralkatorrik in 1330 AE, Taimi provided the Commander with news from Central Tyria at regular intervals. Braham and Taimi were occasionally in contact, and Braham made it clear that he did not want Taimi to share anything he told her with the Commander whom he had not forgiven. Although Braham spent time with Rox, Taimi was unsure if Rox's presence was actually helping him and that he had no one to really talk to.[9]
Living World Season 4[edit]
While in Hoelbrak, Braham and Rox witnessed strange portals opening and never-before-seen undead pouring out to invade the settlement. After beating back the probing assault, the pair decided to investigate the source of these Awakened and entered one of the portals, ending up in a strange asuran lab before taking another portal which led them in the middle of a would-be cave-in which threatened to bury a group of people under a pile of rubble.
After Braham had used his guardian magic to save the group, the pair realized they had stumbled onto the Pact Commander, Rytlock, Canach and an unfamiliar face who introduced himself as Spearmarshal Zaeim. Braham and Rox learned that the Awakened were working for the undead king of Elona, Palawa Joko, and were seemingly pouring out of the ruins of Fahranur, the First City which the Commander's party was presently investigating. Taimi had been kidnapped by what appeared to be Joko himself, and the Commander was trying to save her before she would be harmed. Deciding to set his grudge against the Commander aside for the time being and focus on saving Taimi, Braham joined the Commander as did Rox.
The group eventually fought their way deeper into the city and encountered Inquest technology as well as asura who had been turned into Awakened servants of Joko. In the heart of the complex they discovered Taimi who was trapped within Scruffy 2.0 which had been reprogrammed to not only suffocate her but also force the golem to fight against the Commander as part of Joko's elaborate revenge for being slighted by the Commander in their earlier encounter. While Braham and the Commander faced Scruffy in combat, the rest of the party held off Awakened reinforcements which rushed to the location.
After the battle was over and Taimi had been saved, Rox expressed how much she had missed her old friends and how happy she was to be reunited with them. She tried to soften Braham to the Commander although her efforts were in vain due to the norn still holding a grudge. She and Braham also explained what they had been up to, including the brief Awakened invasion attempt on Hoelbrak which had led them to Fahranur to begin with. Worried that Joko gaining Inquest tech would lead to more Awakened invasions of Tyria, the pair decided to stay in Elona and aid the Commander in further investigations about what Joko was actually planning.
Braham answered the Commander's summons and was present with Rox at the Lifeblood Waterhole. He conceded to their reasoning in that the faster Joko was neutralised, the faster his people could be safe from Awakened invasions, although he was critical of the Commander's plan and extremely reluctant to follow through. He posed as a captive specimen and snuck into an Inquest base undetected, where he witnessed the Commander's discovery that Blish was located at Rata Primus and was transported there via portal along with his companions.
Upon arriving at Rata Primus, he aided Rox and the Commander in their raid, cutting through the Awakened and Inquest. He expressed disdain and sympathy for the specimens being experimented on and marvelled at the size of Rata Primus before his escape. After awakening on the shores of Atholma, he, as well as Rox and the Commander, accompanied the newly rescued Boticca for a meeting with the Olmakhan Elders to discuss the Inquest invasion. He was at first offended by the Charr villager's reluctance to convene with outsiders, but quickly found similarities between the Olmakhan and the norn, pondering aloud if he could mimic the local giant's habit of taking fish.
Braham observed as the Commander sparred with local cubs and quelled their unrest. Afterwards, he expressed sympathy for them, knowing what it's like to be taken over by a voice in his head that spoils for a fight. When the Inquest attacked Atholma, he shielded the cubs, protecting them as the Commander cleared a path to bring them to safety.
He was surprised, and disconcerted, when the Commander enlisted him to accompany them for an assault against Rata Primus, but conceded that they called the shots. Upon arriving there via airship, he expressed optimism towards working with Gorrik after learning how the Inquest member had sabotaged a gate in an attempt to prevent Awakened invasion across Tyria. He advanced deeper into Rata Primus, and after meeting Taimi's old friends, agreed that she should learn of Blish's condition in person, rather than over the comms. Rata Primus began to self-destruct soon after Joko's arrival. Before departing, the lich left Commander Lonai behind to attack the party members. Braham assisted with the battle which took him and the Commander to several different locations around Tyria. Finally, as Lonai was killed, the portal malfunctioned once more and brought him and the Commander to an unknown location.
Attempts to hail Taimi over the comms failed, as the pair were stranded in a starry void, alone. Faced with the uncertainty of the situation, the Commander attempted to bring up the letter Braham sent to Taimi. He was standoffish, but agreed to discuss it, only to be interrupted by Taimi, as the comms reconnected and they were transported home, leaving the tension between the two unsolved. He deflected thanks from the Commander, though his grudge seemed to have weakened.
Once the Commander tracked Joko down to the Domain of Kourna and started calling together their allies, Braham answered the call to arms, joining the allied armies for the battle of Gandara, the Moon Fortress. During the assault on the Moon Fortress, Braham rushed off, spotting a weakness in the fortress defenses and allowing both him and the Commander to infiltrate deep within the Lich King's citadel. As the pair reached the Contaminarium at the heart of the fortress for the final showdown, they discovered it was a trap. Braham saved the commander from the magical snare, but ended up trapped himself, immobilized and forced to simply watch as the Commander fought a desperate battle with Palawa Joko. Only after Joko was defeated was Braham set free again, in time to witness a quick intervention by Aurene putting an end to the Scourge of Vabbi once and for all.
“Braham... [...] I wasn't what you needed. I know that. And I'm sorry, but... I had to be true to myself. I had to follow my legend. I didn't want to leave you behind. Believe me. I knew the cost. But if I'd stayed...what good to you would I have been? [...] And anyway, I could never have been the family you needed. But don't you see? You have that family. These people love you. They will grow your legend...if you'll just stop trying to drive them away..
War Eternal[edit]
The Icebrood Saga[edit]
Along with the rest of Dragon's Watch, Braham was invited to the All-Legion Rally hosted by Blood Legion Imperator Bangar Ruinbringer in 1332 AE. During the celebrations, Braham was accompanied by Ryland Steelcatcher, son of Rytlock and Crecia Stoneglow, and the two bonded over frequent drinking. They conversed about each others' woes and problems, and the relatability of being child to a famous member of Destiny's Edge, among other things. Eventually a fight broke out between Braham and some other charr, and Braham was incarcerated in the Blood Keep's brig. After being freed by the Pact Commander, they discovered that Braham's bow had been taken. After investigating a case of Renegades in the region, Dragon's Watch discovered that it was Ryland who had stolen the bow and brought it to Bangar Ruinbringer for a Renegade rally into the Far Shiverpeaks. The group learned that Bangar was attempting to tame Jormag as his own personal Elder Dragon to rival Aurene who, in the charr's view, had become the Pact Commander's weapon. They tried to chase Bangar and his supporters, but they were blocked by a growing blizzard and an Icebrood Construct.
In 1333 AE, Wolf summoned Garm to Bjora Marches and sent him to look after Braham Eirsson who had ventured beyond Raven Pass to explore the harsh wilderness surrounding Drakkar Lake and find the missing Crecia and Rytlock. Wolf appeared in spectral visions to the Pact Commander, who was searching for Braham, and led them to Garm so the pair could continue the search for Braham and the two charr together. The pair eventually located Braham fighting against icebrood and the Sons of Svanir, and found out that a local kodan community in Still Waters Speaking was keeping Crecia and Rytlock imprisoned. The kodan worried that Drakkar, Jormag's champion, was influencing their minds.
After clearing the misunderstanding and convincing the kodan that the two charr were no threat, Wolf called out to Garm who responded to him by leaving the safety of the kodan village for the depths of the Cerulean Hollows which contained the ruins of the once notable norn settlement of Sifhalla. Braham chased after Garm, only to come face to face with Wolf himself near the Spirit's shrine in Sifhalla.
Wolf revealed to Braham that he had a plan to stop Drakkar]] who was spreading the Ice Dragon's corrupting whispers throughout the region, but required the Commander's and the Vigil leader Jhavi Jorasdottir's presence at the shrine as well. After the Commander and Jhavi had reached the shrine to rendezvous with Braham and Garm, Wolf revealed himself to them while recognizing the Commander's heroic deeds as worthy of the greatest norn legends.
Wolf explained that the kodan, though they were knowledgeable of the true extent of Drakkar's power, ignored the voices of the Spirits of the Wild and needed guidance for the trials ahead. He also revealed that Braham, who had cracked Jormag's fang with Eir's bow, which he had enchanted with the magic of an ancient jotun scroll, had fulfilled some of the conditions of an old prophecy and was now destined to either slay Jormag or fall to the Elder Dragon.[10]
To stand a chance against Drakkar who was siphoning rejuvenating magic from both Jormag's profane idols and the Lost Spirits of Ox, Eagle, and Wolverine, the party needed to smash the idols while Braham needed to reach out to the corrupted Lost Spirits and demand them to give him their power for the coming battle by invoking his role in the prophecy. The Great Spirit also pointed out that Braham could only embrace his power to Become the Wolf once he had proven himself worthy by passing the Lost Spirits' trials which would test his resolve. Having said his piece, Wolf vanished and left the party to decide what approach to take to weaken and distract Drakkar while Braham began his spirit quest.
Once the preparations had been made and Braham had successfully earned the Lost Spirits' blessings, he accompanied the Commander, Crecia and Rytlock to face Drakkar in a cave where a squad led by Jhavi had cornered it into. After Braham had defeated Drakkar with the Lost Spirits' help and fought against the Whisper of Jormag which had emerged from the beast's corpse, he spotted Blood Legion Imperator Bangar Ruinbringer and his subordinate Ryland Steelcatcher arriving at the scene to deliver the killing blow on the Whisper which had nearly overcome the party with its alluring words.
When Bangar shot the Commander with the bow which he had stolen from Braham, the norn went from shock to pure rage as his defensive insticts kicked in. Having fulfilled the conditions that Wolf had set, Braham was finally able to access his totem ability and transform into his wolf form. He attacked the surprised Bangar and Ryland, allowing Crecia and Rytlock to take the injured Commander to safety. Upon reuniting with the party in the Eye of the North and learning what had transpired in Drakkar's lair, Jhavi remarked that Braham had simply needed the push of seeing his friend in danger to embrace his totem Spirit's ability after fulfilling Wolf's request.[11]
After establishing camp behind enemy lines in Drizzlewood Coast during the war between Bangar's Dominion and the United Legions, Braham investigated a strange norn ruin of a temple built to honor the Spirits of the Wild. The large ruin door was sealed with Spirit of the Wild totems, and Braham was certain he could convince the Spirts of the Wild to open the stone door. Since Wolf, Raven, Snow Leopard, and Bear were not responding, Braham was forced to undergo trials with the corrupted Ox, Eagle, and Wolverine.
After Braham completed the challenges, Owl's totem remained. According to norn tales, Owl had sacrificed herself to save the norn when Jormag had threatened them centuries ago, However, Owl was revealed to not be dead, but had instead cut herself off from the Mists and the norn when she was corrupted by Jormag. Owl returned to this temple to hide and with Braham bringing Owl back to her totem, the door to Jormag's sanctum was open. Braham cleared the Dominion soldiers with the United Legion in the Frost Citadel and encountered Bangar bribing Jormag with the totems of Wolf, Bear, Snow Leopard, and Raven as a way to control the Elder Dragon. Ryland entered the fray and while Braham, Rylock, and Crecia were able to free all four Great Spirits from their fate, they were too late in stopping Jormag from waking up.
When joined by the Commander in the Eye of the Norn, Braham confronts Jormag (through Bangar), calling them out for corrupting the Spirits and crimes over the years. While Jormag defends their right to live and claims it is time to end Primordus, Taimi calls and asks the Commander, and Rytlock too, to come see what has been uncovered. Arriving in Rata Sum, Braham and the Commander discover Ryland is already there, courting the Asura for any knowledge about Primordus as an ally in the fight. Although the Arcane Council speak of Ryland as logical alliance, Braham's request to return his bow is still declined by Ryland. Braham heads to the docks to give Gorrik a hand, and helps keep a surprise attack by Destroyers from overrunning Rata Sum.
- Champions Chapter 2: Power
- Champions Chapter 3: Balance
“The Wild together can direct the fall. You are the harness, Norn of Prophecy. Tell them.
Braham realized that the other Spirits were still at risk of being corrupted after Owl's demise and that Tyrian forces would be caught between the devastating and escalating arms race between the two Elder Dragons' clashing armies. Remembering his growing ability to sense destroyers, the paradox of how different prophecies suggested that both Primordus and the Norn of Prophecy were seemingly destined to slay Jormag, and Owl's final words, Braham suddenly had an epiphany. He summoned the Great Spirits to his side and explained his plan to them: he would be the harness to influence the flow of magic to and from Primordus and use the Great Spirits to help the Fire Dragon awaken as a counter to Jormag's growing power. The Spirits could insulate him from becoming fully corrupted as Primordus's champion. With that proclamation, he sought to confront the Elder Dragon in its lair with Aurene's approval.
As Braham descended into the Primal Kiln in Draconis Mons, he conferred with Raven, Bear, Wolf, and Snow Leopard, who instructed him to make his way into the heart of the volcano. Had he not been protected with their magic, he would have burst into flames instantly. They placed their trust and confidence in the young norn, who was now ready to truly become the Norn of Prophecy as had been foretold. It took their combined strength to not only keep him shielded from physical harm, but also protect him from the mental assault that only an Elder Dragon could mount against a mortal. During the descent, Bear voiced her concern that they were taking a big risk and could end up corrupted like the Lost Spirits, trading one would-be Elder Dragon master for the other. However, both Braham and Wolf were quick to assure her that they had to do something before more Tyrians died to the dragons, while Wolf also reminded her that the cries of the Frozen echoed in their minds and they could not stand listening to their agony for centuries.[12]
At the bottom, Braham faced a fierce champion, Destroyer of the Last King, that threatened to end his journey then and there. However, he prevailed against the destroyer with the Great Spirits' advice and remarked about Primordus's changed looks, which Wolf confirmed had been caused by the infection of dispersed magic from dead gods and dragons. Braham then turned to the Spirits for final guidance, and they shared their intentions with him: Wolf would unite them once they entered Primordus, Snow Leopard would direct the Elder Dragon's hunger toward Jormag, Raven would provide clarity in Primordus's judgement to recognize Jormag as his true enemy, and Bear would provide ferocity and fortitude to protect the Spirits from being consumed by the Fire Dragon's rage.
However, the Spirits' first attempt to enter Primordus almost led to their demise as the Fire Dragon felt no affinity with them. Realizing that Primordus needed to be tricked into claiming the connection and the Spirits needed some way to anchor themselves in order to influence the Fire Dragon, Braham remembered Owl's words about a harness and offered himself as Primordus's new champion. It took all of his will—and that of the Spirits—to retain even a shred of his self such that he could complete his mission, even if it meant his untimely death.[12]
- Champions Chapter 4: Judgment
Despite the Spirits doing their best to keep his corruption at bay, Primordus's willpower would eventually break through their protection and fully turn Braham into a destroyer with no mind of his own as he led the destroyers to attack both Tyrians and icebrood throughout Central Tyria. Working together with their assembled army of Tyrian defenders, Aurene and the Pact Commander decided to lure Jormag and Primordus's foremost champions, Ryland and Braham, into a confrontation at a ley line nexus at Anvil Rock and defeat both of them there at the same time. Witnessing their champions' fall would force the Elder Dragons to intervene and clash directly to save their bonded champions and claim the magic for themselves.
The plan worked, and Jormag and Primordus killed each other in the clash. Both Ryland and Braham were weakened in the aftermath, and Braham was able to return to normal with no signs of lingering corruption thanks to the protection of the Spirits. When questioned by the Commander, the weary Braham revealed that the Spirits had kept him from falling off the edge and that they had survived the ordeal but needed time to recover.[13]
- Aftermath
Following the deaths of Jormag and Primordus, Braham traveled to Hoelbrak to attend Dragon Bash and met up with Myrun Skialkin. Despite contributing to the victory with his actions, Braham was not in a festive mood. Myrun revealed that they had arrived to defend their high score in Hologram Stampede, while Braham admitted to have come for the starcake. Myrun approved of Braham's taste, stating that Asta made the best starcakes.[14] In a subsequent conversation with the Commander, Braham explained that he was haunted by the victory over the two Elder Dragons costing so many lives and how he had contributed to the massacre while being Primordus's champion. Despite the sour mood, the Commander tried to lift Braham's spirits by suggesting that the Norn of Prophecy should let his fellow norn celebrate him because he had earned their adoration via ending the ancient conflict with the dragons.
End of Dragons[edit]
Following the events of The Icebrood War, Braham remained in Hoelbrak along with Garm.[15] During the Pact Commander's climactic battle with The Dragonvoid, the effects of the Void deteriorating the world was seen as far as Hoelbrak and Grothmar Valley and Elona. Braham joined in Hoelbrak's defenses, fighting off the Void creatures. Like elsewhere, Braham was nearly overrun by The Dragonvoid's overwhelming forces, though managed to survive against the odds.[16]
- Epilogue
Weeks later, Braham along with the rest of Dragon's Watch had received an invitation to The Dead End for Marjory's and Kasmeer's get-together and surprise wedding announcement, though he was unsure if the invitation was real or just politeness. He showed up after the Pact Commander and Rytlock, wearing casual clothes and sporting a beard. He spoke briefly about his continued guilt and recovery after his actions throughout the Icebrood War, and mentioned that he hopes to never lose those feelings of guilt.[17]

Dialogue[edit]
For historical dialogue, see here.
The Tower of Nightmares[edit]
- I feel like I'm running in circles.
- Stick close. I'll get us out of here.
- I keep seeing my mother...out of the corner of my eye. Have you seen her here? You don't think she's spying on me, do you?
- It's a hallucination, Braham.
- Really? Of all things I could hallucinate, why does it have to be her?
- Just stay close. Don't lose me.
- Hang in there.
- Hang in there.
The Battle For Lion's Arch[edit]
- You look better than I feel.
- What are you doing?
- I'm building my legend! And helping the folks who live here.
- On a broken leg?
- Look, I can't slink away like some injured animal. I was no help in the Scarlet fight. I can do some good here. My leg will heal, eventually. Right now, it's the least of our worries.
- Just be careful or you'll end up lame.
- Hang in there.
Domain of Kourna[edit]
- At the Front Line
- Braham: Wish we could just go ahead and storm the castle. All this waiting is...hard on the nerves.
Sun's Refuge[edit]
- Hey, Commander.
- Before completing Storm Tracking:
- How are you holding up? You've been through a lot lately.
- I think I'll be okay. Mother was... I needed to hear what she said. I'm sorry for acting like a dolyak's rear, Commander. Thanks... for not giving up on me.
- We'll face whatever comes. Together.
- After completing Storm Tracking:
- Are you doing okay? Taimi's news...
- I...guess I'm not okay. It's not fair what's happening to her. I...I wish I could do something. She should feel like we're here because we care about her, not because she's depending on us.
- Then we should make sure she knows that.
- See you around, Braham.
Hoelbrak during Dragon Bash[edit]
- Hey, boss. I debated showing my face here. Between you and me, I would have been happier nursing my wounds from the bottom of a back at Cragstead.
- You enjoying the festival?
- Braham: Oh, yeah. It's a real good time...
- Braham: Not as fun to pretend to slay dragons as it used to be.
- Braham: Do they even know what they're celebrating? Or why? They act like there's some kind of glory in it...
- Braham: They have no idea what it feels like. What it costs...
- Braham: Sorry, Commander. I don't feel like talking. I'm not good company.
- Let them spoil you a bit. You've earned it.
Hoelbrak during Dragon Bash once player has completed End of Dragons[edit]
- Hey, Boss! Glad you could make it. Even if you haven't saved the world this week, don't let anyone say you aren't the hero of the hour.
- It seems like you're feeling more comfortable with the festival this year.
- Yeah. Hearing about everything in Cantha, and Aurene... Well, I'm still standing, so I'm going to keep trying to help people. For everyone, you know?
- Sounds like you're keeping busy?
- Oh, uh, yeah. I've been lending a hand around Cragstead. Always something that needs building, you know? And it feels good, seeing the village recovering.
- You're well past being a local hero, I'd wager.
- Glad to hear it.
- Can't leave my fans waiting then - time to hit the dance floor.
Quotes[edit]
- Greets
- Hey.
- Hi.
- Uh-huh.
- Welcome.
- What?
- Yeah?
- Combat chatter
- C'mon!
- We can handle them, spread out!
- Enemy downed
- Glad that's over.

Notes[edit]
- When Braham acquires Eir's Longbow, it is shown stowed on the left, the opposite side of how it would be for players. When the longbow becomes enchanted by the jotun scroll, it is shown correctly stowed on his right, and changes its appearance slightly.
- During some open world sections of Whisper in the Dark, Braham follows the player around the map but is only visible on client side; to other players, he appears as a raven.
Trivia[edit]
- Braham is voiced by Sam Riegel.[18]
- No other NPC shares appearance with either Rox or Braham.
- He was first introduced in the March 26th 2013 game update.
- Braham's mace, shield, armor, and even his hair have been made available via the Gem Store.
- Braham's original name was Dyre, but some of the developers felt that the pronunciation sounded too much like "Die, Eir" so it was changed.[19]
- Braham had arachnophobia during the story step Legacy, in 1331 AE; but not during The Mystery Cave, in 1328 AE; nor during Roots of Terror, in 1328 AE; nor during Frozen Out, in 1329 AE.

- ^ The Flow of Magic
- Taimi: You won't believe what just happened, Commander. Guess. No, never mind, can't wait. Braham sent me a letter.

- Taimi: "Destiny's Edge—my guild—had it surrounded, and then... Suddenly, an anguished roar, and it returned to the ice." [...]
- Taimi: But since Jormag's all snoozy, he doesn't have a chance of killing it now, does he?
- <Character name>: He better not. Talk to him. Maybe you can get him to see reason. It's never too late for him to do the right thing.
- Taimi: I don't know if he has a choice anymore. He's under a lot of pressure to live up to Eir's legend. And, he's so young.
