Walkthrough[edit]

Note: Playing any part of Heart of Thorns is not necessary to playing this instance, but it's recommended that players play at least to "Prisoners of the Dragon" to avoid spoilers.

There is no combat involved in this mission. It only involves interacting with NPCs and objects.

Go to Eir's Homestead in Hoelbrak to commence. First you'll need to talk to Knut Whitebear, after you can talk to a number of NPCs. The following NPCs have dialogue of interest:

  • Midwife Oddveig
  • Habel Icebreaker
  • Raven Shaman Vidar
  • Ake the Elder
  • Skaald Alfhildr

Once you've had your fill of dialogue, go inside the homestead to talk to Rytlock, then head outside to talk to Rox, then next talk to Garm and then head to the table next to Habel Icebreaker to get some meat for Garm. Head inside and talk to Rox again, then you'll be able to talk to a number of NPCs as well as interact with various objects. There are 2 unmarked flowers next to Tor the Thunderous that can be picked.

  • Placing flowers at the statue of Eir
    • Kneeling before the statue after flowers have been placed.
  • Cleaning Garm with a Bucket of Water
  • Blocks of ice next to each Shaman
  • Dancing with Tor the Thunderous

Once you've finished, talk to Skaald Alfhildr, then to Knut, read the letter you receive, then finally talk to Rytlock and Rox. This completes the mission, however you can still interact with NPCs and objects after this, with some NPCs having new dialogue or new NPCs with dialogue. Once you've had your fill, you can leave at any point.

Knut Whitebear

Memorial for Eir Stegalkin

Greetings, <Character name>, in these dark times. I take up my pen and scroll to invite you to the open-air memorial for Eir Stegalkin. Please join us as we mourn and celebrate this legendary hero.

The Stonewright's Steading in Hoelbrak, where Eir lived, will be consecrated for this purpose.

Wishing you easy passage,

Knut Whitebear

Frost Basin[edit]

Upon entry to the instance:

Knut Whitebear: Hello, friend.

Speaking with Knut:

Knut Whitebear: You made it.
<Character Name>: Of course, Knut. She was a dear friend.
Knut Whitebear: Let's head up. My people will be glad you're here. Some may have questions about what happened.
<Character Name>: I hope it's not why. I'm still struggling with that one myself.
Knut Whitebear: Aren't we all. Perhaps that's the answer Braham left to seek.
<Character Name>: He's not here?
Knut Whitebear: No. He arranged this and then took to the mountains.
Knut Whitebear: The fire inside that boy... I almost feel sorry for any of Jormag's minions he comes across.
<Character Name>: Sounds like he's working through it in true Braham fashion. Good.
Knut Whitebear: Make yourself at home. Your tribune friend certainly has.
Knut Whitebear: Now I'll leave you to it, Commander. Speak with whomever you wish and celebrate, or pay your respects privately.
Knut Whitebear: The spirit of Eir can be found in either.

Approaching Rytlock:

Rytlock Brimstone: She had him dead to rights, and we all knew it. And what was he going to do? Beg? Plead?
Rytlock Brimstone: Wasn't his style, and Eir wouldn't buy it anyway, so he just jumped off the ledge!
Rytlock Brimstone: Well, she wouldn't give him the satisfaction of escape—even to his death; she shot him before he hit the ground!
Nyla Dagdottir: Raven's acorns! (it does not appear in chat panel)
Rytlock Brimstone: (laughs) Damn, that norn knew how to exact revenge!
Gudrun Wernerdottir: That's just like her.
Bjarne Bosson: So true!
Abellona the Merciful: (laugh) Thank you for that story, Tribune Brimstone.
Rytlock Brimstone: I'm not sure why no one's ever made a tapestry of that moment... Hey! Good to see you, Commander.
<Character Name>: You too. Spreading a little Eir cheer?
Rytlock Brimstone: Things were getting too serious. Just ensuring they remember the right Eir.
Nyla Dagdottir: Hey, you're that Rytlock Trombone, the revenant, right?
Rytlock Brimstone: Close enough. Now why don't you do Uncle Trombone a favor and buzz off.
Nyla Dagdottir: But I wanna hear about the Blood Legion!
Rytlock Brimstone: Don't you think quietly weeping in the corner by yourself would be more fun than this?
Nyla Dagdottir: Nah, this is fine.
Rytlock Brimstone: (growl)

<Character Name>: Have you heard from Zojja or Logan? I was crossing my fingers they'd be well enough to make this.
Rytlock Brimstone: Still both laid up on my last visit.
<Character Name>: Hmm, too bad. Mordremoth's death came with a great toll, for sure.
Rytlock Brimstone: You know, with those two out of the field, and Snaff and Eir gone, and Caithe... Well, there really is no Destiny's Edge anymore.
<Character Name>: I'm sorry, Rytlock. I know how important it was to you.
Rytlock Brimstone: Yeah, but there's no sense in looking back. Maybe it's time to start again.
<Character Name>: Another guild? Would Eir...?
Rytlock Brimstone: She wouldn't want us to get caught up in her death like she did with Snaff's. Regret gets you nowhere.
Rytlock Brimstone: And Tyria would probably sleep more soundly with the dragon slayer at the helm of a new guild!
<Character Name>: We could do a lot of good. It didn't go perfectly, but the small group we had was pretty capable against Mordremoth.
<Character Name>: What would we call it?
Nyla Dagdottir: Fate's Razor!
Rytlock Brimstone: I will not be part of a guild called Fate's Razor.
<Character Name>: What about Dragon's Watch?
Rytlock Brimstone: Dragon's Watch, I like that.
Nyla Dagdottir: Can I be in it?
Rytlock Brimstone: No!
Nyla Dagdottir: But I've got my Uncle Beemish's magical sword!
<Character Name>: Not yet, kid.
Knut Whitebear: Commander! Come see this!
Rytlock Brimstone: What's going on?

Stepping outside:

<Character Name>: Rox! You— You...and Garm!
Rox: Commander! What are you doing h— What did I walk into?
<Character Name>: A memorial for Eir. You couldn't have brought a better gift.
Rytlock Brimstone: Yeah, nice work, soldier.
Rox: We're both tired and hungry. Wasn't expecting all this. Garm's hurt, too. We should get him healing as soon as possible.
<Character Name>: What can I do to help?
Knut Whitebear: I'll send for a healer. In the meantime, there's plenty of food around.
<Character Name>: I'll do it Rox, you rest.
Raven Shaman Vidar: Welcome home, brother.
Rune: Look, everyone! Look who it is!

Interacting with Garm:

(if asura)
<Character Name>: Are you hungry, wolf?
(if human or charr)
<Character name>: Hungry, Garm?
(if norn)
<Character name>: You hungry, Garm?
(if sylvari)
<Character name>: Are you hungry, Garm?

Feeding Garm:

<Character Name>: There you go, boy. You're home now.

Speaking with Rox:

<Character Name>: I still can't believe it. How did you find Garm?
Rox: Tracked him from the crash site. Wasn't easy—the jungle's still crawling with Mordrem.
Rox: Some of them have come unhinged without their master's voice. Poor Garm followed Eir's scent into the middle of it all.
Rox: He was lucky to be alive; we both are.
<Character Name>: Braham's going to be so happy when he gets back.
Rox: He's not here?
<Character Name>: No, he's in the mountains blowing off some steam.
Rox: Well, I'll stay with Garm and make sure he's okay. When he's ready, we can try to catch up with Braham.
<Character Name>: I'm sure the cold air will do Garm some good after all that jungle heat.
Rox: Yeah, if I never see another pocket raptor as long as I live, I'll die happy.
Rytlock Brimstone: C'mon. Let's get to what we're here for...
Skaald Alfhildr: Praise Wolf. And now, would anyone like to hear a tale of Eir Stegalkin's great deeds?
Honoring Eir

Interacting with the Statue of Eir Stegalkin:

The only thing this beautiful work in progress needs is a bouquet of flowers at her feet.
Talk quest option tango.png Maybe I'll gather some. (before picked a flower)
Talk quest option tango.png For you, Eir. (after picked a flower)

Kneeling before the Statue of Eir Stegalkin:

<Character Name>: May your Spirits watch over you, my dear friend. It won't be the same without you.

Channeling Spirits of the Wild (reactions are only ambient and don't show up in the chat):

Wolf Shaman Magnia: Wolf chose Eir at a young age. You honor her. This Spirit recalls the importance of the pack, and you were part of hers.
Leopard Shaman Amund: Eir had many of the qualities of Snow Leopard. Her stealth was renowned. You honor her well by carving this statue.
Bear Shaman Ran: Bear gives us our ferocity, and Eir was loved by Bear. You do her honor and remind us of our gifts from all the Spirits.
Raven Shaman Tait: Your craftmanship does Eir honor. She was a great sculptor, drawing her inspiration and skills from Raven.

Speaking with Tor the Thunderous:

Eir loved music. If the spirit moves you, feel free to perform a dance in honor of our departed friend.
Talk end option tango.png Perhaps I will.
Caring for Garm

Speaking with Elder Pet-Healer Lyfia before washing Garm:

Would you mind bringing me some hot water? Garm has blood and dirt caked all over him. Then you can help me wash him, if you'd like.
Talk end option tango.png I'd be delighted.

When bringing hot water to Garm:

Artisan Kelda: Who let that wolf in here? It smells awful.
Raven Shaman Vidar: Um... that's Eir's pet, Garm.
Artisan Kelda: Oh, I didn't... I mean, he's lovely.

Speaking with Elder Pet-Healer Lyfia while having water:

If you wouldn't mind pouring that water on him, it'll help teh enchanted herbs heal him faster. Mordrem wounds fester far too quickly.
Talk more option tango.png But it's so cold out here.
Don't worry. He's an alpine wolf. He grow up swimming in mountain lakes and walking barefoot... barepaw in the snow. Getting this poison off his skin is the best thing for him, I promise you.
Talk end option tango.png I hope so.

After washing Garm:

Artisan Kelda: Ah! He must have heard me. Sorry, Garm! (laugh)
Wolfborn Wilhelmina: What's Garm doing?
Wolfborn Frode: He's looking for her.

Speaking with Elder Pet-Healer Lyfia after washing Garm:

Thank you so much for your assistance. We owe it to Eir to take care of Garm now that she's gone.
Talk end option tango.png Agreed. And thank you for coming.
Proposing a toast

Speaking with Skaald Alfhildr:

Would you care to say a few words about Eir?
Talk quest option tango.png I'd like that very much.
(for other dialogue options see below)
Talk end option tango.png Not right now.
Skaald Alfhildr: Everyone! Lend us your ears. The one who killed Zhaitan with Eir Stegalkin would like to say a few words.
(if asura)
<Character name>: (clears throat) We've all lost people we loved, and the pain of that...can be mind-numbing.
(if charr)
<Character name>: (clears throat) We've all lost people we loved, and the pain of that...can be distracting.
(otherwise)
<Character name>: (clears throat) We've all lost people we loved, and the pain of that...can be overwhelming.
<Character name>: But we can't let the pain stop us from moving forward without them...without her.
<Character name>: Instead, we honor—celebrate—her life, the gift that she was.
(if asura)
<Character name>: Eir is a part of me. A part of us all. How do we reimburse the Eternal Alchemy for that bequest?
(if charr)
<Character name>: Eir is a part of me. A part of us all. How do we dignify that?
(if human)
<Character name>: Eir is a part of me. A part of all of us. How do we thank the gods for that?
(if norn)
<Character name>: Eir is a part of me. A part of all of us. How do we praise the Spirits of the Wild for that?
(if sylvari)
<Character name>: Eir is a part of me. A part of all of us. How do we embrace that?
<Character name>: By living the rest of our lives larger, better. Bolder.
<Character name>: We love, we laugh, we defend our world, and we fight for what's right. We do what she would have done.
<Character name>: Homesteaders, hunters, heroes all! To Eir!
Knut Whitebear: To... (clears throat) Eir.
Rytlock Brimstone: To a great warrior and friend. Good-bye, Eir.
Rox: Nicely done. To Eir.

After the toast (reactions are only ambient and don't show up in the chat):

Leopard Shaman Aukje: There will never be another Eir Stegalkin.
Raven Shaman Vidar: Rest in peace, Eir!
Raven Shaman Vidar: May the mountains hear her name until the end of time.
Ake the Elder: Eir Stegalkin! Her legend lives on!
Ake the Elder: May we all carry her memory until we join her and the Great Spirits!
Habel Icebreaker: Oh, thank the Spirits.
Midwife Oddveig: Well spoken. To Eir!
Wolfborn Frode: To Eir!
Elder Pet-Healer Lyfia: To Eir!

Speaking with Knut:

Knut Whitebear: Commander, this just arrived for you.
Letter from Taimi

Mail.png

Taimi

Quick! Come to Rata Novus!

Hi, hi, hi! I've got something fantabulous to show you. Get here as soon as you can. There's a gate set up in Rata Sum, but it's top secret. Fortunately, you know me.

Go to Rata Sum and look for the Adventure Aide ZK496i golem. It knows to let you in.

—Taimi

Speaking with Rytlock:

<Character Name>: Looks like I'm off to Rata Novus. Rytlock, care to follow?
Rytlock Brimstone: Sure, but I need to take care of something on the way. Or rather, tell someone I won't be taking care of something.
Rytlock Brimstone: Never mind. I'll meet you there.
<Character Name>: Sure. Rox, Rytlock talked me into founding a new guild. It'd be great to have you.
<Character Name>: And pass the invitation on to Braham when you see him... Actually, don't.
<Character Name>: I'll do it in person. I don't want him to think we're merely replacing Destiny's Edge after his mother's death.
Rox: I get it. And I think he will, too... when the time's right.
Interacting with the various NPCs

Speaking with Ake the Elder:

Ake the Elder: Greetings. They say you were there when Eir met her end. What killed her?
<Character Name>: It was a powerful dragon minion, one of Mordremoth's most dangerous. An abomination.
Ake the Elder: I heard it was the head of the Nightmare Court herself. Is that true?
<Character Name>: She didn't deal the killing blow. That was a vicious jungle predator called a vinetooth.

Speaking with Midwife Oddveig:

Midwife Oddveig: Maybe you can explain it. I still don't understand why they didn't bring Eir's body back for a proper send-off.
(if asura)
<Character Name>: We couldn't risk her turning. Her progeny, Braham, took care of her himself. He honored her remains, I assure you.
(if charr)
<Character Name>: We couldn't risk her turning. Her cub, Braham, took care of her himself. He honored her remains, I assure you.
(if norn)
<Character Name>: We couldn't risk her turning. Her son, Braham, took care of her himself. He honored her remains, I assure you.
(otherwise)
<Character Name>: We couldn't risk her turning. Her child, Braham, took care of her himself. He honored her remains, I assure you.
Midwife Oddveig: I thought only sylvari were vulnerable to Mordremoth's corruption?
(if sylvari)
<Character name>: No. Everyone was vulnerable. They were attaching all races to their blighting trees.
(if not sylvari)
<Character Name>: No. Everyone was vulnerable. Anyone, sylvari or not, could be attached to one of their blighting trees.
<Character Name>: The trees created duplicates of people to serve Mordremoth. It was awful.

Speaking with Habel Icebreaker:

Habel Icebreaker: You know, I've always said she was destined to be the next leader of Hoelbrak.
<Character Name>: I can't believe she's gone forever. She was a powerful ally...and a loyal friend.

Speaking with Raven Shaman Vidar:

Raven Shaman Vidar: Was it...quick?
<Character Name>: She died in battle. There was no prolonged suffering.

Speaking with Harald the Builder:

Harald the Builder: I've heard about the golden beings in the jungle. What are they?
<Character name>: Glint foresaw that she would need protection for her last offspring. That's their purpose.
Harald the Builder: But where did they come from?
<Character name>: They were human volunteers, changed by the Forgotten into magical guardians and builders.
<Character name>: They migrated to the jungle and built their fortress there. It's called Tarir.

Speaking with Artisan Kelda:

Artisan Kelda: Condolences for your loss. Eir's death has shaken me. I wonder if the dragon will kill or consume us all, one by one.
<Character name>: We are at war, it's true. But we can win as long as we don't give up.

Speaking with Bjarne Bosson:

Bjarne Bosson: I can't believe it! Garm is alive. Poor creature, though. He must miss Eir. He keeps looking around for her.
<Character name>: I'm glad he's safe and sound.
Bjarne Bosson: He'll be cared for and honored here in Hoelbrak for the rest of his life.

Speaking with Gudrun Wernerdottir:

Gudrun Wernerdottir: What have you heard about the sylvari? Some folks in Hoelbrak are demanding we ban them.
<Character name>: I've seen no evidence they're continuing to turn.

Approaching Master Sculptor Isak:

Master Sculptor Isak: You can rest assured that your legend will be remembered.

Speaking with Abellona the Merciful:

Abellona the Merciful: Excuse me. I heard you found an egg belonging to the dragon Glint. What happened to it?
<Character name>: It's safe. I took it to the place where Glint wanted it to go. It has guardians watching over it there.
Abellona the Merciful: I'm surprised you didn't destroy it. It does contain a dragon, after all.
<Character name>: A dragon that could be our ally.

Interacting with a rabbit:

(when getting food for Garm)
Rabbit: No, no. There's an understanding of peace at the memorial. Bunnies are not a good food choice.
Talk end option tango.png I wasn't considering... well, maybe just for a second.
(at other times)
Rabbit: Eir always had rabbits around, though they seem to have multiplied recently.
Talk end option tango.png As rabbits will do.

Speaking with Tor the Thunderous:

Tor the Thunderous: So happy you could attend, <Character name>.
Talk end option tango.png As am I.

Speaking with Skaald Alfhildr:

Skaald Alfhildr: May the Spirits guide you in this time of endings. So many of those attending have questions about Eir, but they don't want to trouble you.
Talk more option tango.png What events surrounded Eir's death? (recap) (starts cinematic)
I know your story.
The Jungle Dragon was stirring, and you carried Glint's egg to safety.
I can only imagine your feelings of hope as the Pact rallied against Mordremoth,
your sorrow when they failed—
You gathered your hunting party and took the fight to the heart of the jungle.
The beloved hunter we celebrate today—Eir Stegalkin—was felled...forever.
And a revered leader sacrificed himself to help all of Tyria.
Despite such great loss and overwhelming odds,
you and your friends triumphed over Mordremoth.
Today is a day of celebration...and of mourning.
Tomorrow you will hunt new prey.
Talk more option tango.png Yes. What was she like as a child?
About Eir as a young norn. Almost as soon as she could walk, she showed the instincts of a hunter.
But it wasn't until she was as tall as a short bow that she met evil for the first time.
She came upon dragonspawn attacking a farm, killing an entire family. The daughter was one of Eir's friends.
All by herself, Eir took down three of them. She saved an injured kid and even carried him back to Hoelbrak.
That kid grew up to be a great skaald. His name is Corvin, and his life testifies to Eir's first legendary deed.
Talk more option tango.png What put her on the path to greatness?
Eir had passed longbow height when she made her vow. One night, a hundred dragonspawn attacked Hoelbrak.
Jormag's icebrood were merciless. They brutally killed her friend Silas the Weaver, a crafter like Eir herself.
With Silas's blood still upon her, she swore to destroy the Icebrood... and all the Elder Dragons.
Talk more option tango.png Tell me the longest Eir story you know.
I'll tell you how Destiny's Edge came to be.
Eir met the asura Snaff and Zojja first, here in her homestead. They came to commission a stone carving of Snaff's head.
During the sittings in Rata Sum, they became friends. Then the three, and Garm, returned to Hoelbrak together.
I'll never forget how they shocked the citizens of Hoelbrak when they emerged from the asura gate.
Snaff and Zojja each rode inside enormous golems with the stone heads Eir had sculpted for them.
They raided a frigid dragonspawn cave, and a lasting friendship was forged amid the icy shards of bitter combat.
Many icebrood fell that day, but still Eir failed to kill Jormag's lieutenant.
The three—nay, four, counting Garm—limped back to Hoelbrak having lost their golems and their pride.
In retaliation, Jormag's lieutenant sent a devastating ice storm onto Hoelbrak, killing many beloved residents.
Knut Whitebear was beside himself with fury and banished Eir until she could defeat the beast.
Eir went to Lion's Arch, where she spotted a small guild of criminal pit fighters known as Edge of Steel.
The first battle they ever fought together, they fought against each other.
In the pit, Eir and her friends—calling themselves Dragonspawn's Destiny—fought Edge of Steel... and won.
She demanded her prize: that Edge of Steel help with the second assault on the dragon lieutenant.
The Edge of Steel fighters had to agree. Rytlock Brimstone, Logan Thackeray, and Firstborn Caithe joined Eir's cause.
When Eir next entered Hoelbrak, she was with Destiny's Edge. They went on to destroy the dragonspawn lieutenant.
It was the first of many important battles they would fight—and win—together.
Talk end option tango.png Maybe I'll introduce myself around.

My story[edit]

Stonewright's Steading loading screen.jpg

You were invited by Knut Whitebear to Eir's memorial gathering.

Visiting Hoelbrak for Eir's memorial proved just how beloved she was. So many norn were there—so many who had been touched by her bravery. She will never be forgotten.

My story
