“Rest assured, you've got expertise and a fair dose of brilliance on your side.
— Gorrik
Gorrik is an asuran entomologist, holosmith and foremost expert on scarabs who formerly worked for Inquest. His older brother, Blish,[1] is a college friend of Taimi's.
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
Gorrik got to know Taimi when she and his older brother Blish befriended one another while attending the College of Synergetics. Gorrik was a member of the Inquest early on, while Blish was still in college, working at the Thaumanova Reactor alongside Ankka, who would later join the Aetherblades.[2] In 1326 AE, Gorrik studied the Elonian sand moth, as part of his research in the field of entomology.[3] Later, Blish eventually transferred his consciousness into a Mark I Golemite body. This technology was developed by the Inquest, but until the M.I.G. project by Hronk's krewe, always proved fatal.
Living World Season 4[edit]
A Bug in the System[edit]
In 1331 AE, Blish and Gorrik were working at Rata Primus on the Scarab Plague samples taken from Fahranur, the First City. Gorrik was against testing the samples on living subjects but was nevertheless fascinated by the results for scientific reasons.[4]
The brothers discovered the later Awakened invasion that was being covered up by the megacomplex's upper echelons. They took it upon themselves to send out distress signals and barricade the plague samples, as well as attempted to tamper with the Primus gate network that allowed travel without a receiving gate in order to hamper with Awakened attempts to use the gates for their own purposes.
Blish and Gorrik were contacted by the Pact Commander and Braham Eirsson who had spearheaded an Olmakhan assault on Rata Primus to investigate what the Awakened and Inquest were up to. Blish was surprised to hear Taimi's voice coming out of the Commander's personal remote communicator but quickly set the surprise aside as the brothers instructed the team where to find the gate hub so it could be shut down.
The brothers kept Awakened invaders from reaching the bottom lab and hid there long enough for the Commander and Braham to come to the rescue. Blish introduced himself to the newcomers, but before Taimi could inquire why his voice sounded different, the Commander suggested that they keep the reveal of Blish being a golem from Taimi until after they had reunited with her in person. Blish and Gorrik revealed that the Awakened presence had triggered the decontamination protocol which would make the complex self-destruct with no way of stopping it.
Teaming up with the Commander, they rushed to the vaults containing the plague samples, only to discover the samples had already been taken. They headed for the gate hub next, witnessing Palawa Joko and Commander Lonai in possession of the samples and about to flee through an asura gate. Joko taunted the Commander by promising to unleash the Scarab Plague on Central Tyria before entering the portal with the samples, leaving Lonai behind to deal with the group. During the resulting clash the gate, which Joko had tampered with to prevent anyone from pursuing him, began malfunctioning and sucked the Commander, Braham and Lonai in.
Blish and Gorrik began working on the gate to stabilize it and return the Commander and Braham from wherever the gate had sent them, using Lonai's energy signature to direct a portal to the trio's location. However, the attempts failed at first as the battling trio were being teleported around Tyria before they ended up in an unknown location somewhere in the Mists where Lonai was finally defeated. The brothers were ultimately successful in teleporting the Commander and Braham aboard Sayida the Sly's airship outside of Rata Primus and fled the complex with Gorrik's pets just as it was destroyed in an explosion.
When reunited with Taimi, she expressed fascination with Blish's condition, a welcomed change to the usual disgust or horror the brothers saw. After learning that Blish had managed to back up Inquest data on the Scarab Plague and the Elder Dragon Kralkatorrik, Gorrik warmed up to the idea of working with Taimi as long as they discussed authorship hierarchy for any published research and stipulated that Taimi did not have supervisory authority.
Long Live the Lich[edit]
After traveling to the Free City of Amnoon, Gorrik and Blish began researching the Scarab Plague. Gorrik discovered that the scarabs only infected humans and planted Petey, another species of beetle, under his skin to test another theory of his. But locals discovered what Gorrik was up to and arrested him after mistaking him for planning to unleash some pestilence in the city. While Gorrik was put on trial, the Cavaliers impounded his materials at the docks, including Blish who was shoved into one of the crates with his neural net cut off.
After the Commander and Taimi had helped clear the charges against Gorrik, he and Taimi went to the docks to retrieve those impounded materials. While checking his things, Gorrik incautiously released some of his bugs, and the commander and Faren, who was there for the upcoming Tyrian delegation ship, had to squash these bugs. Then, Gorrik and Taimi found the power downed Blish. Upon being rebooted, Blish returned to consciousness with a horrified scream, letting his companions know of his lack of sensory experiences in what he described as nothingness while he had been shut down. Taimi and Gorrik hastily promised never to let him experience that kind of state again and monitored him while the Commander left them to meet with Lord Faren and Councilor Mayameen who were waiting for the supply ship to arrive at the docks.
Blish, Gorrik and Taimi went to the docks later and learned that the Commander had barely prevented an outbreak of the first generation of Scarab Plague carried by the crew of the supply ship whom Joko had secretly infected.
While his brother was setting up the portal to Kourna, Gorrik continued his research about the scarab plague. But then, Petey, which is the beetle Gorrik planted under his skin, jumped out from under Gorrik's skin and ate all the plague samples, by doing that Petey grew bigger. So Gorrik thought he could grow Petey big enough to ride, and started the study immediately. He also asked the Commander to collect various things to help Petey.
Gorrik continued his research until the Battle of Gandara. He and the others followed the Commander to the front gate of the Moon Fortress, but was stopped by the third generation of scarabs, and had fall back to Rytlock's position while the Primeval Queens Nahlah and Dahlah cleaning the scarabs while the commander chasing after Braham.
Gorrik and Taimi went inside the fortress after the third-generation epidemic was averted and learned that Joko was dead. Gorrik then surprisingly found lots of pestilence samples to study, but Taimi decided everything about the plague will be destroy after Gorrik collect the data.
A Star to Guide Us[edit]
While the rift anomalies of Jahai Bluffs were being investigated, Gorrik was with Taimi, observing the data obtained by the Commander and theorizing with Taimi and Blish over what might have caused them. In Sun's Refuge, Gorrik helped Blish to calm down all the refugees. After the Commander returned from the Mist without Blish, Gorrik walked away from the group with sorrow.
All or Nothing[edit]
In Thunderhead Peaks, Gorrik helped with logistics for the Pact and allied forces, setting up a shop in the Grotto, though he had requested a help from the Commander.[5] Later, Gorrik and Taimi used the tracker Blish made to evacuate several villages before Kralkatorrik’s minions broke through. When the final battle initiated, Taimi and Gorrik stayed high above the fight and gave the Commander information from above. After Kralkatorrik got away and Aurene was killed, Taimi and Gorrik found her branded body. When the Commander got there, they were grieving for her.
War Eternal[edit]
When the Commander returned to Thunderhead Peaks to prepare Aurene’s body, Gorrik and Taimi was there waiting. After Aurene was revived, Gorrik sent Kralkatorrik telemetry to help track down him.
At Dragonfall, Gorrik asked the Commander to plant his instruments to collect data about the terrain. The data shown that Kralkatorrik was healing throught ley line energy on the island. To cut down Kralkatorrik from ley line, Gorrik and Taimi helped the Commander made the new Dragonsblood Spear.
Gorrik was not on the airship in the aftermath of Aurene's ascension. According the Taimi, Gorrik was doing research on the skyscales, and the Commander eventually found themselves helping Gorrik save the skyscales from extinction by infusing the eggs of the first skyscale generation with various types of magic in order to stabilize the life cycle of the second generation. Gorrik acted as the newborn skyscales' caretaker to monitor their health while instructing the Commander to carry out various tasks such as locating skyscales which had fled from the nest. Upon discovering how one of the skyscales had bonded with the Commander, Gorrik suggested that the Commander and the skyscale learn to work together and close various rifts which had formed around Elona and Tyria because of Kralkatorrik's rampage through the Mists. To ensure that the Commander could always call on their dragon mount, Gorrik gave them a whistle which the skyscale would respond to.
The Icebrood Saga[edit]
Prologue: Bound by Blood[edit]
Gorrik joined Dragon's Watch as they attended the All-Legion Rally in Grothmar Valley where the charr High Legions were celebrating Kralkatorrik's demise. Taimi chose not to attend the festivities as she focused on working on her treatise, titled "The Elder Dragons Reconsidered." However, she insisted that Gorrik should accompany the Commander's party to Grothmar so he could "live a little." Gorrik reluctantly did what Taimi had asked but only for a chance to study the local fauna.[6]
While in Grothmar, Gorrik mostly spent his time on Erasmus Fangstorm's farm helping remove devourers from killing the cattle. He complained whenever the comm system was interrupted with unimportant conversations between the Commander and various Dragon's Watch members.[7]
Gorrik was approached by a group of charr during the festivities. He was forced to accompany them to the War Room in the Blood Keep where the charr, revealed to be Renegades, interrogated him about what he knew about Aurene's powers and weaknesses and threatened to harm him if he did not tell them anything of value. Gorrik managed to contact the Commander about his kidnapping before the Renegades broke the comm device, and the Commander rushed to the rescue while using Kasmeer's mesmer spell to appear as the famed Blood Legion Centurion Ryland Steelcatcher. Using either guile or brute force, the Commander saved Gorrik from the Renegades who were revealed to be working for Ryland and Imperator Bangar Ruinbringer. Gorrik was sent to safety while the Commander continued investigations in the valley about what the Blood Imperator was up to.
Champions[edit]
Research in the Eye of the North[edit]
After witnessing the fatal clash between the two Elder Dragons, Taimi and Gorrik returned to the Eye of the North. They set up a laboratory near Aurene so they could study and investigate the dragon cycle and any changes to the world from the magical fallout.[8] As there were no visible consequences from the deaths of the dragons yet, Taimi suggested that either Aurene was able to contain the excess magic alone, something else got its share of magic, or that the world is simply short on time.[9] To help with the research, Gorrik proposed to the Commander that they could use the Scrying Pool to search the Commander's memories of their past battles and struggles against the Elder Dragons. Although the Commander initially protested, in the end they accepted and went to relive their memories, starting with following the disturbance in Brisban Wildlands while Gorrik and Taimi went onto studying and recollecting provided data.
End of Dragons[edit]
Gorrik received a message from Ankka, a friend and colleague from his Inquest days, asking to meet up in Lornar's Pass. This was a trap, and Gorrik was kidnapped by Ankka and the Aetherblades. The Commander gave chase but was unable to rescue Gorrik without crash-landing an Aetherblade ship in Cantha.
While in Cantha, Gorrik spent time with Marjory and Detective Rama and became infatuated with the idea of starting a Friends' Detective Agency together, as he dabbled in investigative forensics as a hobby.
Epilogue[edit]
At Kasmeer and Marjory's party, Gorrik told the Commander about the upcoming launch of the detective agency he'd formed with Marjory, Detective Rama, and Ivan, though Marjory reiterated her resistance to the Friends' Detective Agency name. Gorrik stated that the agency had received backing from an anonymous financier for whom Marjory has vouched.

Dialogue[edit]
Domain of Kourna[edit]
- For the last step of Beetle Juice
- That should be everything. Shall we initiate Petey's final mutation and transformation?
- Let's do it. (completes Beetle Juice and unlocks Beetle Saddle)
- And... done! Enhanced speed, strength, and toughness. Petey has evolved into Petey Plus. I dare say if you had a saddle you could even ride him.
- Where would I find a saddle?
- Give me a moment.
- Interacting with Petey before completing Beetle Feed
- HAHAHA! What did you think would happen? Petey doesn't even like you.
- Why not?
- Hard to say, but I bet if you brought him the perfect meal he would love you forever. Roller beetles aren't exactly complex.
- What does he like?
- I've compiled a list for you of what should be the scientifically perfect meal for Petey. I even titled it "Beetle Feed," so you wouldn't get confused.
- I'd better start looking.
- I'd better start looking.
- I see.
- When finishing Beetle Feed
- You've done it, Commander! I'll miss my dear Petey, but I think the two of you will do great together.
- I'll take good care of him.
- Talking to Gorrik after finishing Beetle Feed in Domain of Kourna
- Gorrik: Commander, if you think of it...tell Petey I'm proud.
Sun's Refuge[edit]
- Before completing Storm Tracking
- Hi, Commander. Sorry, we're in the middle of solving a complex calculation regarding the exponential growth patterns of particles found in one of the displaced areas of Jahai.
- What now?
- Blish: We got data back from Scholar Vannis out in Jahai. It's quite interesting... potentially groundbreaking.
- I won't disturb you.
- I'll leave now.
- After completing Storm Tracking
- Oh...yes, Commander? I'm sorry, I'm...a bit distracted right now.
- Gorrik, I'm so sorry for your loss.
- I... Thank you, but...I'm sorry, Commander. I don't feel much like talking right now.
- Just know that we're all here for you, whatever you need.
- For now, I just need to think. And then...work. I think I'd just like to feel useful.
- Taimi will be grateful for your help.
- I understand.
- Never mind. Sorry to intrude, Gorrik.
Thunderhead Peaks[edit]
- Yes, Commander?
- (After completing the heart)
- Do any of the armies have anything to trade with?
- (Prior to completing the heart)
- Looks like you've got your hands full.
- There's much to be done. One: A spider infestation. Two: Soldiers in need of aid. Three: Some stupid tournament. Plus there are scores of demoralized troops that could use some cheering up.
- Spiders?
- Yes, spiders. It's an old place, you see. Infestations are bound to happen. They've been getting after the supplies in the pantry. See if you can return them, would you?
- I had another question.
- I'm on it.
- What kind of aid?
- Our soldiers working logistics are complaining they haven't had a break or a drink in hours. And the wounded in the infirmary are amassing faster than our medics can manage. They could use more hands.
- Another question for you.
- Consider it done.
- Let me guess—Canach is running this tournament.
- Of course. All in service of preparing the troops, he says, which... Well, he's not wrong. But it is doing some good for morale. Head over and place some bets. The troops would love it.
- I wanted to ask about something else.
- I'll go take a look.
- Demoralized troops... Maybe I can help with that.
- Thank you, Commander. Inspiring people isn't really my specialty. I tried my best. Compared them to valiant soldier ants, working for the betterment of the colony, and... I see now where I went wrong.
- One more thing before I go...
- Yeah, let me take it from here.
- I wanted to ask about something else.
- I need to head out.
- Gorrik, how are you doing?
- I'm well! I'm...well. Doing my best to support Taimi—there was no way she was going to be able to handle all of this alone. But some of these tasks are...better suited for a people person.
- Can I lend a hand? (goes to "Looks like you've got your hands full.")
- I wanted to ask another question.
- I have to get going.
- I need to head out.
Eye of the North[edit]
- Upon first visit
- Taimi: Oh, hey. Don't mind us, Commander. Just setting up a lab for important Elder Dragon research. Fate of the whole world depends on it. No big deal.
- Sure thing.
- Gorrik: Is this really the best location?
- (shrug)
- Taimi: If we're investigating the dragon cycle, we should be near a DRAGON, right? There aren't too many Elder Dragons left in the world, so Aurene's our only bet.
- Agreed.
- Gorrik: (sigh) I guess you're right. But we could have a more robust laboratory at Rata Sum.
- Anything I can do to help?
- Gorrik: We can always use more data to isolate commonalities among the Elder Dragons. Find a pattern. You've fought them for years, Commander. Inside your memories could be clues to the dragon cycle.
- My memories?
- Taimi: Ooh, do we get to poke around in the commander's head?
- Leave my head alone.
- Gorrik: I was thinking we use the scrying pool to help the commander relive the memories of these past years.
- Hmm...
- Taimi: That's ingenious, Gorrik.
- She's not wrong.
- Gorrik: Oh. Well. Thank you.
- Time to relive some old memories, I guess.
- I have to go.
- Subsequent interaction
- We're just getting started here, Commander. Impressive setup, right?
- Just relived the marionette incident... (Only during Wrath of the Twisted Marionette)
- Taimi: I can't believe I ever looked up to Scarlet. You can be a supergenius without being a deranged terrorist—HELLO!
- Gorrik: Good thing you were all there to stop her. I was studying the fascinating Elonian sand moth back then.
- Taimi: Oh, yeah. I forgot you had that whole uh...bug phase.
- Gorrik: It's not a phase! Entomology is a legitimate and important field of research.
- About Blish... (Upon completing Return to Storm Tracking)
- Gorrik: That was...yeah. I miss him. A lot.
- Gorrik: I didn't have a lot of friends, growing up. Blish always looked after me.
- Gorrik: He was my big brother. I... Yeah, I really miss him.
- Taimi: Gorrik...
- Gorrik: Well, I have more friends now.
- Taimi: Blish would be proud of you.
- Gorrik: You think so? I hope so.
- Give me an update on the dragon fallout.
- Can you be more specific?
- Did Primordus's minions survive?
- Many destroyers seem to have immediately..."gone out" for lack of a better word. Stronger specimens seem to have persisted for the moment, though. Fascinating, resilient creatures they are.
- That's a little less to worry about.
- Did Jormag's armies survive?
- Readings vary among the Icebrood and Frost Legion—the most heavily "ice-infused" were extremely debilitated. A high percentage of outright fatality in that sample group.
- It's hard to feel much sympathy there.
- What's become of Jormag's Frozen?
- Jormag's demise hasn't unfrozen them, unfortunately. According to the Priory papers, thawing is occurring, but it may be lengthy. Some may never recover, though. We don't really know.
- Let's hope they find a way to bring everyone back safely.
- I was wondering about residual magic. I'll talk to Taimi.
- Do you have all the equipment you need?
- And then some! The Arcane Council has been fulfilling all resource requests, no questions asked. I'm...not used to this level of resources, quite honestly.
- Do you think they're trying to make amends for helping Jormag?
- I believe that's a rhetorical question. However, to no one's surprise, Primordus's death has skyrocketed the Council's approval metrics. The help could be from guilt, or just spreading the wealth.
- Well, if they're helping I won't question it.
- Don't get used to it.
- Carry on.
Lion's Arch[edit]
- During Return to Season 4
- <Character name>! It has been far too long. I've grown exactly six new grey hairs since we last met.
- Show me the achievements. (After talking to him for the first time)
- Good to see you, Gorrik. Now, what can I help with?
- A lot happened around the time Blish and I left the Inquest. Aurene, Joko, Kralkatorrik... (clears throat) I grew a beetle under my flesh... I'd like to get a full picture of the overlapping events.
- I remember that time well. I'd be happy to revisit it with you.
- Much obliged, Commander. Your firsthand account will be a critical resource in my documentation! And, if you'll allow me to get personal, that was also when we met. A trip down the cognitive apparatus!
- I'd be happy to help, my friend. I remember that time well.
- How have things been going, otherwise?
- Fine! Taimi and I got a little place in Kaineng so that she can be close to Joon's lab. It's a bit big for my liking, but Taimi let me turn the back room into a specimen chamber. You should visit!
- "Specimen chamber." Do I want to know what that means, Gorrik?
- Your face is almost as green as Rama's. Quite impressive. The forests of Cantha are filled with a number of arthropods and parasites that haven't been studied by an expert of my caliber.
- So things are going well, then?
- Brim & Scarab has seen a steady flow of business. Taimi's thrilled to be working in a lab again with someone who challenges her. I could use fewer cats on the airship, but... Yes, things are going well.
- Glad to hear it, Gorrik.
- Let's catch up later. I can sense more crises brewing.
Historical dialogue[edit]
- In Eye of the North during Dragon Bash
- We're just getting started here, Commander. Impressive setup, right?
- You two going to check out Dragon Bash?
- Gorrik: I don't know. Doesn't really feel like my scene.
- Taimi: We could use a break from staring at charts and papers, though. Think I could chug a whole stein of norn grog?
- Gorrik: Their body mass is much greater. I think you'd die from liver failure.
- Taimi: Me? Ha!
- Gorrik: It does feel a bit...weird to be celebrating the bashing of dragons. Figurative or otherwise.
- Taimi: Primordus threatened the asura for ages, and Jormag wreaked havoc on the norn.
- Taimi: I don't agree with it, but yeah I understand why the festival exists.
- Carry on.
