— Peitha
Lady Peitha of House Nephus is a Kryptis Lord from Nayos, the Realm of Dreams. She is the sister of Cerus and Deimos, the cousin of Heitor, and the niece of Midnight King Eparch and Queen Labris. Peitha feels empathy for her people under the tyrannical reign of her uncle, and has set her sights on the Pact Commander whose actions may help her advance her own goals and ulterior motives. She is curious about mortals and their emotions and has a playful if a bit unsettling side.
Following her triumph against Eparch in the Kryptis civil war, Peitha succeeds him as the new Midnight King of Nayos and ushers in an age of more peaceful relations between the Kryptis and the inhabitants of Tyria. |
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
Peitha came to being as a Kryptis demon alongside her brothers Cerus and Deimos in Nayos, the Realm of Dreams, at some point. She was assigned a noble rank in House Nephus by her uncle Eparch, the Midnight King. She, like the other Kryptis, served Eparch who aimed to find a way through the Veil into Tyria from which he had been exiled by the Seer wizard Isgarren. Before present times, Peitha only recalled hearing Isgarren's voice once when she was very little.[1] Peitha, along with her siblings and other higher Kryptis, tried to breach into Tyria multiple times as per Eparch's orders; each of them possessed several Tyrians in the past, and their first possessions in particular took them time to process the many emotions of their victims.[2]
However, when Eparch did not lift a finger after Deimos was trapped in the Bastion of the Penitent and slain by raiders and the Pact Commander in 1330 AE,[3] Peitha grew more disillusioned with the Midnight King's reign but chose not to oppose him openly like her mentor Febe had as Eparch was bound to punish anyone openly rebelling against him. She also began viewing Cerus as nothing but a tool for Eparch because the greedy Cerus, who yearned for the Midnight King's approval, lacked what little honor Deimos had possessed. Peitha considered Eparch and Cerus as despoilers of Nayos and the Kryptis, especially because the Midnight King had taken to not only intimidating his subjects into servitude but even devouring them.[4]
Peitha first became aware of the Pact Commander after the latter had successfully escaped the Domain of the Lost and resurrected later that year. The Commander's return to Tyria created a subtle ripple through the Mists, which she felt from Nayos.[5]
Secrets of the Obscure[edit]
Act 1[edit]
Peitha sensed the Pact Commander's presence again in 1336 AE when the Commander and an Astral Ward hunting squad led by Arina had been sucked into a rift. The hapless Tyrians were separated across Nayos in the ensuing chaos, and the Commander found themself alone in the hostile landscape of the corrupted Temple of Febe. As Cerus came to investigate the trespasser and began toying with his latest prey, Peitha invaded the Commander's mind and began communing with them telepathically from that moment on. She urged the Commander to utter Cerus's name to anger the Kryptis Lord, and then subtly helped the Commander escape Cerus into a nearby portal to Skywatch Archipelago which Mabon of the Wizard's Court had opened upon sensing the Commander's distress.[5]
Act 2[edit]
Though she does not directly take part in the action during this act, Peitha continues to offer commentary to the Wayfinder.
On one occasion the player will overhear Peitha talking to Eparch.
- Peitha: “Scurrying like prey, waiting to be killed.”
- Strange Voice: Good.
- <Character name>: What? Peitha…?
- Peitha: “(sigh) Soon my king.”
She will inquire about Aurene when the Wayfinder makes mention of her upon first treading the halls of the Wizards tower. The player recounts that the prismatic dragon is currently slumbering.
She reveals that Eparch had once been to the Wizard's Tower as well. This story is relived in the Lonely Tower Fractal.
During this act, near the beginning of Mabon's Fate is the first time the player sees Peitha as a spectral image in the Wizards Tower.
After Mabons possession, and subsequent death, Peitha will comment that she senses Cerus’s presence. Thought it is unclear which specific Demon may have been possessing him, or if it was a collective.
- Peitha: His...callowness clings to the air. I feel the warmth of his breath collecting on your skin.
- Peitha: Disgusting. The dolt follows Eparch without a thought.
- <Character name>: Who are you talking about?
- Peitha: Did Eparch send him simply to cause havoc before the main event...?
Act 3[edit]
After Cerus snared Isgarren and the Pact Commander, Peitha intervened before her brother could deal the final blow. Revealing her disdain for the status quo in Nayos, Peitha betrayed Cerus and aided the Commander in killing him. She returned with them to the Wizard's Tower, wherein she stated her plan to stop Eparch from using the Kryptis as fuel for his planned rampage through the Mists.
After the Wayfinder finally located Isgarren it was revealed that Cerus, the demon first encountered at the start of Secrets of the Obscure, has possessed Isgarren. Before fighting the possessed Seer Peitha reveals Cerus is actually her brother.
Towards the end of the fight with Isgarren, Cerus pulls the Wayfinder and Isgarren into the Temple of Febe once more.
Peitha comes to taunt Cerus, at first feigning interest in his latest catch. She makes a reference to Deimos, the final boss in the Bastion of the Penitent raid, revealing that he and Cerus are related.
Upon defeating Cerus; Peitha, Isgarren and the Wayfinder escape the Temple of Febe and reconvene in the tower.
Peitha reveals the demon civil war that is brewing in Nayos and her ultimate motivation to stop Eparch who has been feeding on the other Kryptis.
At first, Isgarren is indifferent, stating that without bodies Eparch wouldn’t be able to invade Tyria. However Peitha convinces him that with this power Eparch could invade Tyria to feast as well. [6]
Upon further questioning Peitha reveals that she has known of the Wayfinder since they sojourned to the Domain of the Lost. They felt their presence again in the Temple of Febe and knew that with their combined power they could overthrow Eparch. She also sheds some light on the sibling dynamic between her and her brothers. Deimos having always been favored by Eparch, after his imprisonment Cerus tried to replace his brother but could never live up to his example.
Through the Veil[edit]
Some time after, Peitha contacted the Wayfinder again to inform them that the situation in Nayos was darkening and Eparch’s atrocities escalating. Upon arriving at the The Wizard's Tower to reconvene, the Wayfinder found out that Peitha and Isgarren were struggling to get along but still tried to work together. While Isgarren was not planning on joining the fight in Nayos, the immediate threat to Tyria due to Kryptis rifts was severe enough that he agreed to help, to Peitha’s relief. However, Peitha was worried about overwhelming the Kryptis with too many visitors too quickly, so she suggested sending in the Wayfinder first along with a few allies to gain the Kryptis’ trust. She mentioned that she and her allies had established a base in the outer reaches of Nayos, away from Eparch’s spies, and this is where the advance team would head to.
Before leaving the Wizard’s Tower however, the group was attacked by Kryptis coming from a powerful rift. Peitha went into the right accompanied by the Wayfinder, Isgarren and Zojja. There, they fought more Kryptis, as well as a general called Sorrow. Once the final wave of enemies defeated, Peitha and the Wayfinder ventured deeper into Nayos, while Isgarren and Zojja returned to Tyria. On their way to the camp, Peitha revealed that her old teacher used to be Febe, who also felt the same way as Peitha did now about Eparch, and he was killed.
Upon reaching the camp, Peitha and the Wayfinder once again were ambushed by Kryptis loyal to Eparch. When they finally cleared all the enemies from the camp, they were able to catch up with the Astral Ward team that had been lost, led by Arina, as well as Ramses, a Kryptis friendly to Peitha and the Ward. Peitha revealed that Heitor, her “cousin”, was responsible for the attacks, as an act of revenge for the Wayfinder and allies killing Cerus, her mate.
Following their discussion at camp, Peitha sent out the Wayfinder to scout Inner Nayos further, and help the Astral Ward and push back the Kryptis loyal to Eparch to send a message to their master. Using Peitha's name, the Wayfinder was able to convince some Kryptis, such as Irja to join the Astral Ward/Peitha alliance against their master, Eparch.
After securing the outskirts of Inner Nayos, and rallying some Kryptis to the cause, Peitha and the Wayfinder moved on to strike Heitor, Peitha's cousin. Any hope of rallying Heitor to the cause seemed to vanish when she absorbed Irja's life energy and killed them, leaving Peitha and the Wayfinder no choice but to kill her. While Peitha regretted that Heitor had to die, she told the Wayfinder not to worry, as Heitor was cruel, even though she was driven by fear.
The Realm of Dreams[edit]
By 1337 AE, after establishing a stronghold in the first area of Inner Nayos, the Astral Ward and local Kryptis reconvened at a War Council to decide how to push forward towards Eparch's forces. While Isgarren did not yet want to commit the full support of the Astral Ward, Peitha suggested that help may be found with local Kryptis, and that they would follow someone they respect, such as General Nephus. Peitha tasked the Wayfinder with gathering more information while assisting the local forces, until General Nephus would be found. The Wayfinder had to carefully navigate the next steps with Peitha, as if they did not manage to resolve the situation themselves by recruiting more Kryptis loyal to Peitha, Isgarren would likely order the total destruction of Inner Nayos and the Kryptis, in order to protect Tyria from their invasions.

Dialogue[edit]
Skywatch Archipelago[edit]
- Telepathic dialogue at Vass's Compassion
- Peitha: Mm. These "fractals," as you call them... Curious things.
- Peitha: I've seen them form before in the Mists. Ones that form on their own. They don't only tell stories of your world.
- Peitha: I feel the fear—the beings brought into your world. I feel...sympathy for them.
The Wizard's Tower[edit]
- Telepathic dialogue at the Wizard's Tower
- Peitha: To imagine him in this place, as bright as it is.
- <Character name>: Did Eparch...live here?
- Peitha: Long enough to be hungry for more. You should ask your wizards. Isgarren and Eparch have a long history.
Amnytas[edit]
- Telepathic dialogue at Grand Library of Amnytas
- Peitha: The people of this world have such a fascination with...things. Baubles and books. Though, I do quite like the word "bauble."
- Peitha: The Kryptis are not too dissimilar in that way, admittedly... Though, I could blame Eparch's lust for what is not his.
Inner Nayos[edit]
- At Memory's Hollow next to the Southern Beacon
- More questions, Wayfinder?
- Last I traveled deeper into Inner Nayos, my people roamed the countryside, some dwelling in the outskirts, many more residing near the citadel.
- Times changed. Eparch changed. Our people began to flee from their king_myself included. Soon the barrier appeared, to protect them from "outside threats." Supposedly.
- Thanks, Peitha. We'll talk later.
What happened?
- That's enough for now.
What's on the other side of the barrier?
- We'll talk later.
