Outrider Arina Copperwolf[1][2] is a norn from the Astral Ward sworn to the Bastion of the Obscure,[3] and the daughter of Ragna Copperwolf and Frode, the Warden of the Ward.[4]

Biography[edit]

Early years[edit]

Arina was born on the third resting day of winter to Ragna Copperwolf and Frode Wurmsbearer some time after 1309 AE.[5] She was also gifted a handwoven doll from Gaerta Whitebear.[2] Later, when Arina was still very young and training with the elders, her father Frode, a shaman of Wurm, lost faith in the Spirits of the Wild after witnessing harrowing events involving his friend Sejm in the north and left the homestead and family to be on his own as he could no longer look them in the eye and believed that Arina would not miss him. She was brought to the Astral Ward by Mabon of the Wizard's Court after she had been looking for her father.[6] When Arina joined, Frode had already been a member of the Ward for at least a decade, and the two reunited in a rare occasion as not many members were able to keep in touch with their loved ones from their life before joining.[7]

Secrets of the Obscure[edit]

Act 1[edit]

In 1336 AE, Arina got lost in the demonic realm of Nayos after being pulled there by a Kryptis Rift while she was leading a mission to contain the Kryptis in Gendarran Fields. She was also instructed to avoid any interaction with the Pact Commander, who was reported to become likely involved in the mission, while also handling them with the utmost respect if necessary.[1] However, she was forced to stay in Nayos with her unit as the rescuing effort was focused on the Commander instead,[8] though her father held the belief that she would survive if she had at least half of the strength of her mother.[8]

Following the successful rescue of the wizard Isgarren, the Commander recovered Arina's dog tag "Arina 892 Snow 0XV1 Obscure" from a pile of bones in a cave near the Gendarran campsite while Arina herself was still missing in action. The Commander also helped the wizard Dagda by locating the scattered divination cards of Waiting Sorrow, one of which was referring to Arina and titled XV: The Fiend.

Through the Veil[edit]

After entering Inner Nayos, the Pact Commander encountered Arina and other surviving members of her unit, learning that they had managed to build a camp in the enemy's territory while they also had met Peitha and Ramses who decided to aid the stranded members before a contact with the Astral Ward could be made. Arina remained at the camp whilst others progressed matters in Inner Nayos until joining the assault on Heitor's Gate.

The Realm of Dreams[edit]

After Heitor's defeat, Arina returned to the Astral Ward Camp and participated in the War Council.[9] While the Wayfinder caused distractions across Inner Nayos, Arina had stayed with Peitha at the Astral Ward Camp managing the search for General Nephus. Once recruited, General Nephus planned an assault on Eventide's March while he deployed Peitha with Ramses and Arina with Frode as the horns of the attack striked from the flanks whilst Nephus himself had begun a frontal assault with the Wayfinder. The three groups reunited on the steps of Eventide's March and pressed the attack until Queen Labris joined the fight. Once Labris had been subdued, Arina supported Nephus' entreaties to just kill her immediately but Peitha decided on a bolder course of action. Arina stayed with Peitha and Frode whilst the Wayfinder lit the beacons summoning Kryptis to an audience at the Coliseum of the Midnight King. Arina, like all other Astral Ward present, was immobilized when Eparch arrived. After he had left, Arina answered the Wayfinder's questions about the situation and possible effect on morale.[10]

Frode: I've never told you how I came into the ward. have I? I was once a shaman of Wurm. But Wurm abandoned me with dire timing... I...witnessed something terrible. My hunting party...
<Character name>: We don't have to talk about this now—
Frode: No, I'm...fine. I witnessed Sejm, a friend, get stuck between transformations while we were hunting in the north. Something...wrong happened. Something dark. I couldn't trust the spirits after that.
    <Character name>: That sounds horrible.
Frode: My faith was gone. I left my homestead—I couldn't look my family in the eye. I didn't think Arina would miss me, anyway. I left to be on my own.
Frode: Isgarren and Uenno found me next, having witnessed what I did. They brought me to Amnytas. I didn't truly heal until he sat with me—Mabon. He helped me work through that trauma.
<Character name>: I knew him so briefly, but I know that Mabon was good.
Frode: That he was. When Arina came looking for me, he was the one that brought her here. He thought we needed each other, and...we did. I... Arina...

You may have been in shock—and it may have taken a decade to heal from those wounds—but I knew even then that you were a leader. That you could be OUR leader. [...]
Do not make this choice immediately. You've only just reunited with your daughter—so few of us get a chance to share this with loved ones from before.

    Frode: ...And Arina?
Narcisse: She didn't make it back. Mabon focused all of his energy on grabbing the commander.
Frode: If she has half the strength of her mother, I pity the Kryptis that tries to put her down...
