Heitor

Heitor is a Kryptis general loyal to Eparch. She is the cousin to the Nephus siblings, of whom Cerus is her mate.[1]

Biography[edit]

Early years[edit]

Heitor enjoyed the life of a Kryptis noble in Midnight King Eparch and Queen Labris's court in Inner Nayos. She became the mate of her cousin, Cerus of House Nephus, and thought that Cerus's sister Peitha had been "spoiled to the horn." Even the life of a noble was not easy during Eparch's harsh reign; Heitor and Peitha did what they could to survive in the Citadel of Zakiros, and Heitor embraced the cruelty of her fellow nobles as she preferred tormenting and devouring lesser Kryptis than letting herself be devoured by Eparch and Labris in turn. At some point, Peitha left the court and voiced her disapproval of the Midnight King's tyrannical ways. Heitor, meanwhile, submitted herself to Eparch. Heitor did not share Cerus's optimism for Peitha ever amending her sentiments of Eparch.[2]

Secrets of the Obscure[edit]

In 1336 AE, Heitor learned that Peitha had betrayed and slain Cerus in combat, and she grew angry with her cousin. Eparch had sent her and Commander Ignaxious to oversee the fortress of Heitor's Gate and prevent any intruders from entering Nayos heartlands via a barrier while the king sealed all paths to his castle. Heitor ordered several of her forces to scout the surrounding countryside, and some scouts ran into Astral Ward stragglers from Tyria led by Arina who had been stuck in Nayos for months after a rift accident had plunged them there.[1][3] Astral Ward speculated that Ignaxious was accompanying Heitor not only to serve as her lieutenant to guard the fortress but as a means for Eparch to keep an eye on Heitor to ensure her loyalty after Peitha's rebellious actions.[4]

After convincing a few of the local Kryptis to offer their assistance, adjusting the fearful locals to the presence of Tyrians, and slaying several of Heitor's roaming officers to weaken loyalist hold on the region, Peitha and her lieutenant Ramses used the forces provided by Arina's Astral Ward and the Pact Commander to take down Heitor's Gate and slay Ignaxious, after which the four rebel commanders sought out Heitor deeper within the fortress. Meanwhile, Heitor and Ignaxious's grunts had managed to capture Irja, a fearful Kryptis commoner who had been sympathetic to the rebellion, and brought her to Heitor.

Peitha and her fellow rebel commanders encountered not only Heitor but the captive Irja in the heart of the fortress and witnessed Heitor and Peitha exchanging barbed words where both accused the other of fighting for the wrong side while Peitha offered Heitor one last chance to join the growing rebellion. When Peitha suggested that Heitor was not driven by zealous loyalty but fear of being punished by Eparch, however, Heitor grew angry and demonstrated the fate of all who defied the Midnight King: she cruelly consumed Irja's life force to empower herself and attacked the shocked Peitha while voicing her desire to avenge Cerus's death. Despite her best efforts, however, she was ultimately no match for the strike team who overpowered her. Heitor, unhinged, desperately clung to her allegiance to Eparch right up to her unceremonious death. Peitha would remark after the battle that Heitor wanted to die, and death had saved Heitor from a much more miserable existence.

<Character name>: And who is this "Heitor"?
Peitha: Oh, what would be the appropriate Tyrian familial connection... My cousin?
Ramses: And one of Eparch's prized fang-suckers.
Arina: A bit pissy that you offed her mate, based on how many she sent. Managed to take down most of 'em before you got back.
    <Character name>: Cerus, I assume?
Peitha: We've no shortage of family drama. Now that Heitor knows of this place, we'd better stop her from sharing the news.
  2. ^ Heitor's Gate
Heitor: Don't pretend. Not with me. Your brother always hoped you'd...amend your sentiments of the king, but...
Heitor: I know better. You're always been spoiled to the horn. [...]
Heitor: You haven't been to the castle in some time, have you? You ran. And hid. You still run.
Peitha: And you kiss each leg of the spider; has he shown you his venom yet? [...]
Peitha: You didn't have to do this. We can go another way.
Heitor: Of course I did, Cousin. If not them, then us. [...]
<Character name>: Were she and Heitor close?
Ramses: Every breath in this place requires sacrifice. They were both survivors.
Ramses: They were not "close," but they both fought hard to live.
  3. ^ The Survivors
Peitha: Heitor's dreams have been misplaced, but these are the bones that we plucked. She's currently holding a fortress to the north.
Peitha: If we can breach her gates, prompt her to change allegiance—
Arina: Unlikely, friend. Her champions hunt us on the field. One of you, or all of us, will die unless we put her down first.
    Peitha: I know.
Peitha: Wayfinder. This is why your presence became cardinal. Heitor's arrival signals a change in Eparch's plan.
Peitha: I don't know what he's doing, but it feels...imminent. They're sealing all paths to the castle.
