Walkthrough[edit]
Start the mission and talk to Malyck. His plan is for Valiant and either Trahearne or Caithe (depending on which choice the player made) to wear Nightmare disguises and enter the camp.
Enter the camp. Go to the top of the camp where the green circle is. Then your disguise vanishes and the guards flip out. Kill them.
Once you have killed enough guards the Knight of Embers will arrive and start her monologue. After her speech she make a huge ring of fire. The fight starts.
Once the Knight takes enough damage she exits the the ring of fire. The Knight is invulnerable when outside the ring of fire. While the Knight is outside the ring her allies attack. Her first ally uses a longbow.
Upon defeating the longbow armed ally, the Knight returns to battle until her health drops enough to force her back outside the ring of fire. The next ally is a necromancer minion master. Once the necromancer is defeated the Knight returns for the final battle.

Dialogue[edit]
With Trahearne[edit]
If you previously chose Trahearne's path, A Different Dream
Opening cinematic:
- Trahearne: This is the place. The Knight of Embers will be waiting to meet the grand duchess. If she is allowed to tell Faolain the truth, the results will be disastrous.
- Malyck: Why, Trahearne? What aren't you telling us? This is my life! I deserve to know the truth!
- Trahearne: You're right, but yours isn't the only life in danger. I'll tell you the truth, and then, you must make a choice.
- Trahearne: My research has led me to believe that the Pale Tree is not a unique creature. Legends say her seed is one of many, found in a cave.
- Trahearne: That cave has never been found, but it seems at least one of those other seeds was planted. It sprouted the tree which bore you, Malyck.
- <Character name>: If that's true, there could be other cities of sylvari. Other Groves...
- Trahearne: Groves untutored by Ventari's tablet. Do those sylvari dream, I wonder? What inspires them?
- <Character name>: If Faolain finds out, she won't need the Grove. The court will burn the Pale Tree to the ground and find one they can more easily twist to nightmare.
- Trahearne: Yes. If that happens, the sylvari race will be no more. Tyria will fall into darkness.
- Malyck: No! I won't let that happen. If I must die to keep this secret, I will do so.
- Trahearne: Then we have only one option. The Knight of Embers must die.
After the cinematic
- Trahearne: You can't do this alone. I'll stand with you.
Upon speaking to Trahearne:
- Trahearne: Malyck has a plan. Risky, but innovative. Speak to him about it.
- I will.
Upon speaking to Malyck:
- Malyck: I kept the disguises from Joy's End. Dress up, act like you're escorting me, and we'll get past the guards.
- Not if you do all the talking. They'll assume I'm a recent convert.
- Smart. Let's do this!
Cleverly done. Won't they notice you're not disguised?
- They'd expect it if we were both disguised. Since I won't be, they'll be suspicious—but your silver tongue can get us past the door.
- I hope you're right. Let's go.
Aren't they suspicious of that trick by now? And what about your disguise?
- If they ask, tell them I'm your prisoner. And be surly—very surly. It'll work.
- Fine. Just give me the clothes.
If we only have one disguise, how will this work?
- Let me think about this a moment.
Speaking to your allies:
- Malyck: Disguised and ready. Here we go.
- I'll be right behind you.
- Trahearne: Nothing to see here.
- Right. Move along.
Entering the Nightmare camp:
- Nightmare Courtier: Halt! I haven't seen you two before. What do you want?
- Really? The Knight of Embers must be expecting you. Quickly, go to her and tell her all you know!
- On our way!
We have critical information about the harbinger, you twig! Get out of our way!
- Is there to be a feast? Well, then! Save me some of the roast, will you?
- We absolutely will.
It's a glorious eve for nightmare! We brought drinks for the feast.
- The harbinger and a firstborn are approaching the camp. We must warn the Knight of Embers at once.
- We're just looking around. Sorry to bother you.
Speaking to your allies:
- Malyck: We made it this far—now let's get to the back of camp, where they keep the prisoners—and the weapons.
- I see where this is going. I like your style.
- Trahearne: Those prisoners at the back of camp would be a good distraction. We should free them.
- Good call.
At the back of camp (in-game cut scene):
- Malyck: Take a look at that.
- Nightmare Courtier: Would you look at that?
- Nightmare Courtier: In time, all will succumb to the supreme authority of the Nightmare Court.
The prisoners are freed:
- Nightmare Courtier: Over there!
- Skritt Forager: Thanks. Uh, thank-you thank-you!
- Skritt Lobber: Attacking! There, there!
- Skritt Forager: You're gonna get it, and I'm gonna give it to you!
- Nightmare Courtier: The enemy approaches!
Speaking to your allies:
- Malyck: They're on to us! Get this place cleared out, and maybe we can still catch the Knight of Embers by surprise!
- For the Pale Tree.
- Trahearne: Get them!
- On it!
After the guards are defeated:
- Knight of Embers: An ambush is the best you can offer? How sad.
- Knight of Embers: You're already a creature of nightmare, Harbinger. Why fight us?
- Malyck: You're a liar, and soon, you'll be a dead liar.
- Knight of Embers: Impudent whelp. I'll show you why the call me the Knight of Embers.
- Knight of Embers: Filth. This town will be your funeral pyre. Soira, Lania—to me!
Speaking to your allies:
- Malyck: There's the Knight of Embers. Fight with everything you have!
- Agreed!
- Trahearne: The fiend appears. Now, to end her tyrannical reign!
- For the Pale Tree!
Fighting the Knight of Embers and her guards:
- Knight of Embers: I need support!
- Lania the Feathered Death: All that you are will end in flames and ruin.
- Lania the Feathered Death: I see death over your shoulder. Can't you hear it creeping up?
- Lania the Feathered Death: You will burn in fire for this.
- Knight of Embers: Lania! You killed her! My vengeance will make an inferno feel pale and weak!
- Trahearne: Assault the necromancer. Do not let her summon a horde.
- Knight of Embers: Retreat!
- Soira the Dreameater: I'll flay you alive, and the Mistress will burn your bones.
- Soira the Dreameater: Ah, death. It is all that I dreamed...
- Knight of Embers: Soira! My beloved squire! You fools. May nightmare take your souls!
Cinematic after defeating the Nightmare Court:
- Caithe: There you are! The Pale Tree told me where to find you. I have to tell you, Malyck's tree...
- Trahearne: We know. The Nightmare Court nearly found out as well. It is for the best that the Knight of Embers is dead.
- Malyck: Still, this is only the beginning. Even if they don't know the reason, the court will keep searching for their "harbinger."
- Malyck: If I stay here, others will try to convert me to nightmare. They'll discover my secret.
- Caithe: He's right. Faolain will hunt him, and I promise you: she does not give up.
- Malyck: Somewhere to the west, at the source of that river, there's another tree. Maybe even another city, with more sylvari like me. My family.
- Malyck: I'm going to find them. When I do, I'll tell them about the Grove, and I'll return with an army to help fight the dragons.
- <Character name>: I wish I could go with you, Malyck, but my duty is here. I wish you good fortune and safe travels.
- Malyck: Don't worry. We'll meet again, some day.
Speaking to your allies:
- Malyck: <Character name>, you've been magnificent. Through you, I've learned loyalty and honor. I shall carry those virtues to my people, wherever they are.
- I hope we hear from you again, Malyck. The Pale Tree needs allies.
- I feel that you will, Valiant. Someday.
- Safe journeys. May you find your home.
- Safe journeys. May you find your home.
- Caithe: The Knight of Embers is dangerous—but Malyck, in truth, is more so. The knowledge of other trees, other Groves, must be guarded.
- I agree, for everyone's sake. Still, I hope we'll see Malyck again...someday.
- Trahearne: I wish Malyck luck, but I'm also relieved to see him leave. His presence is too dangerous to the Grove.
- True. I hope we see him again—after he finds his people.
With Caithe[edit]
If you previously chose Caithe's path, Source of the Issue Opening cinematic:
- Caithe: This is the place. The Knight of Embers will be waiting to meet the grand duchess. If she is allowed to tell Faolain the truth, the results will be disastrous.

- <Character name>: If Faolain finds out, she won't need the Grove. The court will burn the Pale Tree to the ground and find one they can more easily twist to nightmare.
- Caithe: If that happens, the sylvari race will be lost forever. Zhaitan and the Elder Dragons will win.
- Malyck: No! I won't let that happen. If I must die to keep this secret, I will do so.
- Caithe: Better that the Knight of Embers die, instead. Come, we have no time to waste.
After the opening cinematic:
- Caithe: We have work to do.
Upon speaking to Caithe:
- Caithe: Malyck's plan could work. Simple. Direct. Speak with him and see what you think?
- I'll talk to him right away.
Upon speaking to Malyck:
- Malyck: I kept the disguises from Joy's End. Dress up, act like you're escorting me, and we'll get past the guards.

Speaking to Caithe and Malyck after confirming your plan:
- Caithe: Act normal. Think about puppies.
- Not helpful, but I'll try.
- Malyck: Disguised and ready. Here we go.
- I'll be right behind you.
Entering the Nightmare camp:
- Nightmare Courtier: Halt! I haven't seen you two before. What do you want?

Speaking to your allies:
- Caithe: The prisoners are at the back of the camp. Freeing them could be distraction enough to cover our escape.
- Excellent idea.
- Malyck: We made it this far—now let's get to the back of camp, where they keep the prisoners—and the weapons.
- I see where this is going. I like your style.
At the camp:

Speaking with your allies during the fight in the camp:
- Caithe: Less talking! More destroying!
- Right!
- Malyck: They're on to us! Get this place cleared out, and maybe we can still catch the Knight of Embers by surprise!
- For the Pale Tree!
After freeing all of the skritt and defeating all of the visible Nightmare Court, the Knight of Embers appears:
