Walkthrough[edit]
Go to the Imperator's Core in the Black Citadel and talk with Rytlock, who has news for you. It is in the form of a letter that appears in your mailbox. Talk to Rytlock after reading the letter and he will send you to Windrock Maze. At Windrock Maze, talk to your warband survivor and they will accompany you. Your two new warband members will separate and search different areas. Depending on your profession, the skelk can be quite difficult. Attempt to focus on one at a time and note they frequently stealth then circle around behind you.
Follow the map markers to the clues. As you find clues the other warband members will rejoin you one at a time. After all three clues are found, follow the marker to the chest. The chest is at the bottom of a small pool and guarded by Bonecracker. It is possible to use a ranged weapon to defeat the Barracuda near the top of the pool from the shore, where they are unable to reach you. Defeat Bonecracker and recover the key part from the chest.

Dialogue[edit]
Blood Tribune Quarters[edit]
Approaching Rytlock:
- Rytlock Brimstone: Ah, Legionnaire. Glad you could make it. I've got some news I wanted to deliver to you personally.
Speaking with your allies before opening the letter:
- Rytlock Brimstone: We can't get started until you read your father's letter. Do that, and then we'll talk.
- Yes, sir.
- Laria Sharpeye: Tribune Brimstone is waiting, Legionnaire. You'd better see what he wants. We can chat later.
- Understood.
- Tribune Bhuer Goreblade: At ease, Legionnaire <Character name>. Tribune Brimstone is waiting, and tribunes don't like waiting. Read your sire's letter and report for your new duty.
- Understood, Tribune.
- Tribune Torga Desertgrave: We've been talking this over, Legionnaire. Now it's your turn. Read your sire's letter and report to Brimstone for a briefing. Quick and quiet, now.
- Will do, Tribune.
Speaking to your warband members:
- Clawspur: Brimstone's waiting, boss. I'll be standing by when you're done.
- Thanks. At ease until I return.
- Dinky: Quick, talk to Brimstone so we can get out of here. Offices make me nervous. Offices, officers...pretty much anything that starts with "offi."
- Sit tight, Dinky. I'll deal with this.
- Euryale: The tribune's got a letter for you. Better read it—whatever affects you, affects all of us.
- I'm on it.
- Maverick: I smell an opportunity cooking. Better talk to the tribune, find out what it is.
- Will do. Wait here, Mav.
- Reeva: Tribune's waiting, boss. Find out what he wants so we can get back to the fighting. My muscles are cramping up from all this standing around!
- Easy, Reeva. I'm dealing with it.
Letter in your mailbox:
My Last Will and Testament Cub, I am sending this missive as I've been wounded in action and am slowly succumbing to my injuries. I have to tell you: years ago, my warband and I found a strange treasure in the ruins of the Grendich Courthouse. We couldn't divide it up, so we struck a deal: the last survivor would inherit the whole thing. As it happens, I am the last survivor. However, as my life is coming to an end, I am leaving it to you. We broke the key to the treasure room in half and hid the pieces in separate locations. Look for a chest submerged within Windrock Maze: its combination is hidden on the walls of the maze. The second half of the key is in Lamia Mire—follow the old-fashioned trail markers we left on the trees. If you find the treasure, it's yours. Think of it as my legacy. Live well. Be strong. Be victorious. —Your father, Argus Foolkiller |
After reading the letter (cinematic):
- <Character name>: My sire's letter says his warband found treasure near the old Grendich courthouse.
- <Character name>: They hid it until only one warbandmate was left to claim it. Unfortunately, my sire's entire warband went down together, so it falls to me.
- Rytlock Brimstone: Very interesting. I've always suspected that courthouse held valuable relics. I used to explore around there when I was a cub.
- Rytlock Brimstone: You've got me curious. If that treasure is a powerful or valuable human relic, the Imperator will need to be informed.
- Rytlock Brimstone: I'm relieving you of regular duty until you track this down. Report back to me as soon as you know anything.
Speaking with your allies:
- Rytlock Brimstone: I'm anxious to learn more about this human treasure. If it's related to the ghosts, I'll need to report its existence to the Imperator. Good luck, Legionnaire. Keep me informed.
- Did you know my father?
- Mostly by reputation. The Killer warband was best known for brilliant autonomous operations in the field. They got results, and the brass likes results.
- Thank you, Tribune. I'll do my best to keep that tradition alive.
- I'll look into it immediately.
- Laria Sharpeye: I had no clue you were Argus Foolkiller's cub! I didn't even know my own sire. You know how soldiers get after they ditch their cubs at the fahrar.
- What do you mean?
- Some follow their cubs' progress though the High Legions, but others—like mine—move on as if they have no cubs.
- You sound familiar with my sire. Was he famous? (same as "I didn't realize my father was famous.")
- Your warband is like your family, so having a sire and dam who stay in touch is like having two more members of your warband.
- I follow. But how do you know my sire? Was he that famous? (same as "I didn't realize my father was famous.")
- Hmm. I'm not sure I agree, but I understand. See you later.
That's true, but it's always been true. Don't need to be sad about it.
- Some soldiers weren't cut out to be parents. Excuse me, I've got work to do.
- I didn't realize my father was famous.
- Of course! He and the Killer warband were experts with ancient Legion trail markers. They could execute an ambush without saying a word.
- Famous for stealth—quite an achievement. I wonder what he thinks of me? (same as "What do you mean?")
- He showed me some of those markers before I went to the fahrar.
- I'd love to learn more. They're not used much anymore, but still fascinating. It might be easier than talking to Tribune Brimstone in person. He's got a sharp tongue and an even sharper wit.
- Back to your point—how is Argus different from other sires? (same as "What do you mean?")
- I hear that. Just don't let him rattle you, and you'll be fine. See you later.
- I've got to go. I've got a mission.
- It's not easy being a soldier. It can't be easy to raise one. See you around.
- Tribune Bhuer Goreblade: Normally I wouldn't give up such a promising warband, but Brimstone swore this was important—and I want him owing me a favor. Carry on, soldier. Iron will be waiting for you.
- Yes, Tribune.
- Tribune Torga Desertgrave: Hate to turn one of my best warbands over to Blood, but Brimstone insisted. And I agree—this is worth pursuing. Follow up on your father's letter and hurry back. Ash needs you focused and ready.
- Of course, Tribune. I'll take care of this straightway.
- Clawspur: Your sire was one of the greats. One time, he bet me I couldn't slash the wings off a hovering sparkfly without hitting its body. The smile on his face when he lost...priceless.
- He always liked you. You didn't waste his time with chatter. Let's go see what he left me.
- Dinky: I always liked your dad. One time when he dropped by the farhar, he warned them that I wouldn't be a runt forever. In the end, he was right, and they were punched.
- He liked you, too. Come on. Let's see what he left for me.
- Euryale: Your sire was something else. When I was a cub and people told me to lighten up, he said "Stay mean, Euryale. Smiles don't keep your warbandmates alive." I never forgot that.
- And you've lived up to it ever since. Come on, we've got a tresure to find.
- Maverick: Your dad's still looking out for us, huh? Just like the good old days. A treasure chest...outstanding! If I ever have cubs, all they'll need to inherit are my good looks, charm, and charisma.
- They may need more than that. Come on, let's go secure my inheritance.
- Reeva: A treasure hunt? Now we're talking! Your dad always was great to spar with. He used to call me "Reeva Runs-Her-Mouth" and laugh when I called him "Ar-goose."
- He loved that. Nobody else would dare. Come on, let's see what's in that chest.
Windrock Maze[edit]
Speaking to your other allies before talking with your warband survivor:
- Yahuk Fellstrike: I've been here only once, with my primus in the farhar. It was a combined field trip/search-and-destroy exercise. I recognize the entrance, but we didn't go in far.
- Good to know. Stand by in case I need you.
- Samona Ironclaw: A maze, huh? Should be interesting. I love brain-teasers! You go ahead, boss. I've got your back.
- Good to know. Stand by in case I need you.
- Wroda the Quick: I don't like mazes. Too many blind corners.
- Whatever ambushes us will wish it hadn't. [sic]Good. Stand by in case I need you.
- Elexus Shredskin: I don't like this place. It reeks of skelk scat. But don't worry—I've got your back.
- Good. Stand by in case I need you.
- Fyon the Wraith: I'd like a full day to explore this maze, but we're in a hurry. More eyes is more effective. I'm ready to back you up, boss.
- Good. Stand by in case I need you.
- Soure Doomsday: You can count on me, boss.
- Good. Stand by in case I need you.
- Luccia Wildeye: I like these canyon mazes. The echoes make it easier to overhear people. Anyway, I'm at your disposal, boss.
- Good. Stand by in case I need you.
- Cimmara Pistolwhip: I've got your back, boss.
- Good. Stand by in case I need you.
- Zemzer Undercut: Ready for action, boss.
- Good. Stand by in case I need you.
Speaking to your warband survivor:
- Clawspur: I'm ready. What's the plan?
- You're with me. <Warband survivor first name> searches to the left, <other warband member first name> to the right. Move out.
- Stand by. I need a moment to survey the terrain.
- Dinky: I like mazes. It's fun to be lost on purpose. So what's the plan, boss?
- You're with me. <Warband survivor first name> searches to the left, <other warband member first name> to the right. Move out.
- Stand by. I need a moment to survey the terrain.
- Euryale: What's the drill here, boss? Where do you want me and who do I kill?
- You're with me. <Warband survivor first name> searches to the left, <other warband member first name> to the right. Move out.
- Stand by. I need a moment to survey the terrain.
- Maverick: Maverick's ready to roll, boss. What's the plan?
- You're with me. <Warband survivor first name> searches to the left, <other warband member first name> to the right. Move out.
- Stand by. I need a moment to survey the terrain.
- Reeva: I'm ready. What's the plan?
- You're with me. <Warband survivor first name> searches to the left, <other warband member> to the right. Move out.
- Stand by. I need a moment to survey the terrain.
- <Warband survivor> salutes <Character name>.
- <Warband legion member> salutes <Character name>.
- <Warband other member> salutes <Character name>.
Speaking with your warband survivor again:
- Clawspur: What do you think it is? Coin? Weapons?
- No idea. But he left it for me, so I mean to have it.
- Dinky: Wouldn't it be funny if the treasure was just a bunch of limbless torsos? Then we'd be looking for a chest chest.
- If it's funny to you, Dinky, that's funny enough.
- Euryale: The only thing my sire ever gave me was a warhammer. He knew I preferred magic, the spiteful old beggar. So I gave him his hammer back, head-first.
- I remember him limping away. We laughed about that for ages.
- Maverick: I'd like this maze better if all the walls were transparent. How can anybody see me being awesome though all this solid rock?
- Don't be so modest, Mav. Your awesomeness punches through all obstacles.
- Reeva: I want the treasure chest to be filled with balloons and confetti and clowns that pop out and yell, "Surprise!" And then we beat the makeup off 'em.
- A long shot, Reeva. But you can dream.
At the eastern rock:
- Suspicious Rock: Lichen and dirt nearly obscure the symbols carved into the rock. It reads: "— — 4".
- It's part of the code my sire's letter mentioned. I'll note it.
Interacting with the same rock again:
- Suspicious Rock: Lichen and dirt nearly obscure the symbols carved into the rock. It reads: "— — 4".
- I've seen this code before. I'll keep it in mind.
After acquiring the first bit of code:
- Clawspur: One code down. Now for the rest.
- Dinky: I'll remember the code, boss. Well, I'll remember we have it. Someone else needs to remember the...digits.
- Euryale: That's one piece of the code. Let's go get the rest.
- Maverick: We're on our way. One code acquired. We're like real treasure hunters now.
- Reeva: Hey! One code acquired. We're definitely on our way.
As your other warband member appears:
- (if Ash)
- Samona Ironclaw: Cover me!
- Wroda the Quick: Enemy contact!
- (if Blood)
- Fyon the Wraith: Prepare to bleed!
- Soure Doomsday: Prepare to bleed!
- (if Iron)
- Zemzer Undercut: Prepare to bleed!
- Cimmara Pistolwhip: Enemy contact!
At the western rock:
- Suspicious Rock: Lichen and dirt nearly obscure the symbols carved into the rock. It reads: "— 0 —".
- It's part of the code my sire's letter mentioned. I'll note it.
Interacting with the same rock again:
- Suspicious Rock: Time and skelk clawmarks have nearly obscured it, but the code shows through on the rock face: "— 0 —".
- I've seen this code before. I'll keep it in mind.
As your legion warband member appears:
- (if Ash)
- Yahuk Fellstrike: Enemy contact!
- (if Blood)
- Elexus Shredskin: Prepare to suffer!
- (if Iron)
- Luccia Wildeye: Prepare to suffer!
At the southern rock:
- Skelk Nest: Like all skelk nests, this one is a loathsome collection of mud, sticks, feathers, and hair. Unlike most skelk nests, this one seems misshapen, like it was built over something unusual.
- Clear off the center of the nest.
- Leave the nest alone.
Interacting with the revealed boulder:
- A boulder inside this stinking skelk's nest has odd markings carved deep into the rock. It reads: "8 — —".
- That's the last bit of code. Time to unlock the chest!
Interacting with the revealed boulder for a second time:
- A boulder inside this stinking skelk's nest has odd markings carved deep into the rock. It reads: "8 — —".
- I've seen this code before. I'll keep it in mind.
At the chest after finding all three code fragments:
- Sunken Chest: A tarnished metal chest is secreted away under the rocks. Sand and sediment clog the combination lock, but the mechanism appears to be functional.
- Enter the combination: "8 — 0 — 4".
- You slide the numbers into position, and the old chest clicks open. Nestled inside, there's one half of a broken old key.
- Take the key.
- Guess at the combination. How hard can it be?
- Click! A tiny needle on the lock jabs you in the finger. Only the actual code will safely open the chest.
- Enter the combination: "8 — 0 — 4". (leads to "You slide..." as above.
- Leave it alone for now.
- Leave it alone.
Speaking with your allies before departing:
- Clawspur: Hidden chest, secret code, broken key—there must be something good waiting at the end of this.
- You're not usually this enthusiastic. I hope the treasure turns out to be worth it.
- Dinky: Half a key? What a rip-off! But hey, your sire still left you something. My father left me at the fahrar, and that's all he left.
- We still don't know what he left me. But we're going to find out.
- Euryale: Half a key? Suspicious. What if this is a trap?
- If so, whoever's behind it is going to get more than they bargained for. Let's move.
- Maverick: This is getting good. The more ground we cover, the more people see us in action. There are folks out there literally dying for a dose of Vitamin Mav.
- Eyes on the prize, Mav. Firs the treasure, then the bragging.
- Reeva: Half a key? Now it's getting really interesting.
- I agree. I can't promise you clowns and confetti, but let's see what we've got.
- Yahuk Fellstrike: This is actually fun. Plus, it's something other than ghosts. I like killing things that stay dead. What's next, boss?
- Next we find the second half of this key. Let's move out.
- Samona Ironclaw: Half a key is better than none, right? I prefer combination locks myself—more moving parts means more fun for Samona.
- Maybe the next chest has one. Let's find out.
- Wroda the Quick: We're halfway there. I'm looking forward to seeing what your sire thought was so valuable.
- Me too. Let's move out!
- Elexus Shredskin: Half a key secured, half a key to go. This is turning into a real scavenger hunt.
- The reward waiting at the end better be worth the trouble.
- Fyon the Wraith: Half a key, eh? Your sire sure had a sense of style. Too bad I never got the chance to drink and fight alongside him.
- I have a few great stories about him. I'll save them for after the treasure.
- Soure Doomsday: Your sire was a crafty one. Between the maze, the code, and the broken key, I'm witnessing a master at work.
- He was one of a kind. Let's see what's at the end of this scavenger hunt.
- Luccia Wildeye: This is turning into a real mystery. Can't wait to see what's waiting at the end of it.
- That makes two of us. Let's go find out.
- Cimmara Pistolwhip: Okay, now I'm interested. What would be worth this much trouble to hide?
- That's what we're going to find out. Let's move.
- Zemzer Undercut: I have to say, this is kind of fun. Half a key, a secret code, a hidden maze. Was your sire the playful type?
- He kept people guessing, but he played it straight with his friends. Let's move out.
Notes[edit]
- On completion of this story segment, First Half of Inheritance Key is displayed in personal story.
