Walkthrough[edit]

Using the Searing Cauldron

Accompany Laranthir along the south coast of Winterknell Isle, where you will be attacked by 2 groups of Risen along the coast before reaching the main drop / staging site.

At the staging site, there appear to be 4 distinct groups of Risen, each of which can be lured away and dispatched separately. Once done, 3 additional bone tendrils spawn, protected by Risen knights: avoid the tendrils ranged AoE attacks and clear all of them to proceed.

The searing cauldron will now be air dropped in by Arda's airship, although her ship will be shot down in the process. You must defend the area while the cauldron is readied and charged up. If playing solo it's probably a good idea to prepare AoE / multi target attacks for maximum effectiveness.

Once readied, the cauldron fires down destroying the Cathedral of Verdance. Rather than run off and search for Arda, Laranthir advises caution and recommends confirming that Risen Prince Nekandezzar is truly dead. You must now go investigate the burning cathedral ruins for the Prince's remains; unlike the preceding phases, your only accompaniment here will be Laranthir, so tread carefully.

Laranthir will point out an undamaged sublevel to investigate. Proceed to kill all of the visible Risen. Head to the lowest point of ground in front of the temple and stay on that level as you walk towards (beneath) the altar. Prince Nekandezzar will appear, but in a disguised 4-man form, so you must dispatch the true Prince - Laranthir will shout a hint to fight the form holding a "Crimson Blade", although with AoE attacks it is just as easy fight all 4 at once.

Defeating the prince completes the first half of the mission, quit the instance and follow the quest pointer to the second half.

Locating Arda Gyreshriek

The second half of the story begins to the west side of Winterknell Labyrinth. Speak to Laranthir, then head west towards Winterknell Shore to begin your search for Arda. As always, there will be plenty of Risen foes to defeat along the way, keep an eye on Laranthir and make sure he doesn't go down.

After finding Arda's sword, you will approach another Risen patrol and Lanranthir will muse aloud on whether to sneak past or fight them. Whether you fight or sneak, further along you will then find Arda's pistol, keep moving north in your search to meet up with a severely injured Arda fighting off Risen foes. Rush in and help fight them off, however the ordeal proves too much for Arda who will die in Lanranthir’s arms.

Dialogue[edit]

Cathedral of Verdence[edit]

Upon approach (cinematic):

Laranthir of the Wild: The cauldron is on the way, Commander. That pilot of yours really knows her stuff. I'm confident she'll deliver.
Laranthir of the Wild: Our job is to clear the landing zone. You remember Barron and Fero? The Priory sent them to prep the cauldron once it's in position.
Laranthir of the Wild: Enemy resistance hinges on our two main objectives: the cathedral, and Prince Nekandezzar, leader of the Risen forces there.
Laranthir of the Wild: There's something special about that one. He's been destroyed multiple times, but keeps coming back stronger than ever.
Researcher Barron: Not this time, guv. Fero and I are ready to roll. Let's see ol' Nekkie shrug off a point-blank Searing Cauldron to the face!

As you try to reach the entrance:

Researcher Fero: If things go pear-shaped and we all get killed, I'm blaming you, Barron.
Laranthir of the Wild: These aren't dead yet. Not all the way. Draw your weapons.
Laranthir of the Wild: Many have lost their lives here. This Cathedral is more of an abattoir. Be on your guard.
Laranthir of the Wild: They're coming in from the water. Cut them down!
Laranthir of the Wild: Patrols everywhere. We'll have to clear the entire area out before we can proceed.
Laranthir of the Wild: We'll deploy the cauldron up ahead. Take the lead, Commander.

After you have cleared the entrance:

Laranthir of the Wild: Artillery! We need to shut down those bone tendrils before our airship can deliver the payload.
Laranthir of the Wild: Keep moving! Don't make yourself an easy target.

Regrouping with Laranthir:

Laranthir of the Wild: That's the last one. I'll mark the drop zone with smoke.
Laranthir of the Wild: There, near the steps: another tendril! Gyreshriek! Pull up now!
Laranthir of the Wild: The airship is down, but we can still complete our mission. Hurry!
Researcher Barron: The cauldron's intact. Back me up, Fero. This is going to be more complexicated than we thought!
Researcher Fero: Don't wait for me, boyo! You carry your load, I'll motovate mine.
Laranthir of the Wild: Hurry, Nekandezzar will reserve his main force in case this is a feint, but he may try to flank us.

As you defend the cauldron:

Laranthir of the Wild: They're coming in from the south!
Laranthir of the Wild: Hostiles incoming, north side!
Laranthir of the Wild: Eyes west. Enemies inbound!
Laranthir of the Wild: They're coming down the stairs, straight at us!
Laranthir of the Wild: They're coming back. Watch the stairs!
Laranthir of the Wild: What's the hold-up, Barron? We can't wait forever!

After the cauldron meter has been filled up and used (cinematic):

Researcher Fero: Well, braid my ears! Those ancient Flame Legion poo-bahs may've been evil, oppressive oiks, but they knew how to enchant a weapon.
Researcher Barron: Too right! That's a proper bonfire, that is. Now we just need to sweep up the ashes and detectify that pilot lass of yours.
Laranthir of the Wild: Not yet. I'm sorry, but this mission isn't over yet. Arda will have to wait until we verify that Nekandezzar is truly dead.
Researcher Barron: You what? Ol'Nekkie is a pile of greasy grit right now, believe you me. Nothing could have lived through that. Nothing!
Laranthir of the Wild: If it were anyone else, I'd agree. But Nekandezzar has walked away from certain death before. This time we have to make sure.
<Character name>: Then let's get moving. The longer we take, the worse Arda's chances get. Put a guard on the cauldron and follow me.

As you explore the Cathedral of Verdence:

Laranthir of the Wild: Watch your step. Some of these "corpses" still have life left in them...and fire.
Laranthir of the Wild: Look. That lower area looks like it escaped the blast. Nekandezzar could be down there.
Laranthir of the Wild: Such destruction. Even in ancient times, the charr were a foe to be feared.

After you clear out the undead in lower area:

Risen Prince Nekandezzar: So, my hunters are finally revealed. You staged quite the fiery spectacle.
Risen Prince Nekandezzar: Using the cauldron against us was a bold move, but it won't save you.
Risen Prince Nekandezzar: You are worthy foes, but in the end, all will be food for the dragon.
Risen Prince Nekandezzar: I am Prince Nekandezzar, Wielder of the Crimson Blade, The Grand Deceiver. (four princes together)

As you battle the Princes:

Laranthir of the Wild: Careful! Those decoys aren't illusions. They're his personal guard.
Laranthir of the Wild: That was a decoy. Nekandezzar himself is sustaining them. We just have to identify the original.
Risen Prince Nekandezzar: I will triumph, for I am legion. Strike me down, and I shall rise again.
Laranthir of the Wild: Those disguises can't be perfect. Look for the difference that sets them apart!
Risen Prince Nekandezzar: I will triumph, for I am legion. Strike me down, and I shall rise again.
Laranthir of the Wild: Look for the Crimson Blade! The real prince wields a blade forged in blood. Find him!
Risen Prince Nekandezzar: I will triumph, for I am legion. Strike me down, and I shall rise again.

After you defeat the prince (cinematic):

Laranthir of the Wild: Finally. Nekandezzar is gone, and the cathedral is ours. A great victory.
Laranthir of the Wild: We've crippled the Risen war machine. For the first time, Zhaitan's army is fully on the defensive. Excellent work, Commander.
<Character name>: And you, Warmaster. But I'm not celebrating until we find our pilot.
Laranthir of the Wild: Of course. We'll cover more ground if we split up. My squads and I will help you comb this entire battlefield.
Laranthir of the Wild: Don't lose hope. I haven't known Gyreshriek long, but she seems tough. If anyone could have survived that wreck, it's her.

Talking to your allies:

Laranthir of the Wild: Once this mission is complete, we'll go find Arda. When I finish up here, I'll meet you and we'll search the crash site.
Talk end option tango.png I'll be ready. Arda made this possible. I won't abandon her.
Researcher Barron: Heyo! You don't see explosions like that every day, now do you? The ol' ancestors knew a thing or two about devastation, right?
Talk more option tango.png Too right, Barron.
Nice to see you picking up the lingo, sunshine. But don't just stand here jawboning with yours truly. You've got that pilot lass to collect.
Talk end option tango.png I do. Good-bye, Barron.
Talk more option tango.png Even better than a sonic cannon? (If did The Sound of Psi-Lance)
No, but you can't go comparin' cheese to catapults, me old mucker. Fiery cataclysms and mind-melting blasts are two different colors o'bunnies, savvy?
Talk more option tango.png Can't argue with that because I don't know what it means.
Ah, you know more than you let know. But this ain't time for elocution lessons from the likes o'me. You've got that pilot lass to collect.
Talk end option tango.png You're right. Thanks for your help, Barron.
Talk end option tango.png Good-bye.
Researcher Fero: No wonder Barron's so barmy. If my predecessors had magicked up a bowl that 'sploded like that, I'd have bats flapping in my bell tower, too.
Talk more option tango.png I can see how you two make such a good team: communication.
I'm a bit badgered about your missing aviatrix, though. That big charr lass knew her way around an airship, I tell you what. Hope you find her, sharpish.
Talk end option tango.png Thanks. So do I.
Talk more option tango.png This is a far cry from sonic weapons in dredge country. (If did The Sound of Psi-Lance)
Right you are. I'm a bit badgered about your missing aviatrix, though. That big charr lass knew her way around an airship, I tell you what. Hope you find her, sharpish.
Talk end option tango.png Thanks, Fero.
Talk end option tango.png Good-bye

Winterknell Isle[edit]

Upon entering Winterknell Isle (cinematic):

<Character name>: Nothing so far, Commander. And with all the undead patrols in the area, the search is proving more difficult than I expected.
Laranthir of the Wild: I worry that even if Arda survived the crash, what the enemy will do to her is far worse than death.
<Character name>: Then we need to expand our search. I'm going to move into the foothills near the coast.
Laranthir of the Wild: I'm with you. But we have to be careful and take things slowly. It won't do Arda any good if we get ambushed before we find her.

Talking to Laranthir of the Wild:

Laranthir of the Wild: We won't rest until we find her, Commander. We've lost too many heroes in Orr already.
Talk end option tango.png Agreed. Let's keep moving.

As your walk towards all the marked area:

Laranthir of the Wild: There's the airship. I don't see her body, though. Let's keep looking.
Laranthir of the Wild: Look, Arda's sword. She survived the crash.
Laranthir of the Wild: See those patrols? They must be searching for her, too. Should we fight them, or sneak past?
Laranthir of the Wild: Lots of bodies. Arda was definitely here. We'd better be hurry: they're after her.
Laranthir of the Wild: Arda's pistol. She must have cast it aside when she ran out of ammo. That's not good.
Laranthir of the Wild: There she is. And she's in trouble. Come on, we've got to move!

As you reach Arda Gyreshriek:

Arda Gyreshriek: I knew you'd find me...but rescue isn't really an option any more. Just tell me...did we get 'em, boss?
Laranthir of the Wild: We got them. The cathedral, Nekandezzar, and more undead than you could count...the cauldron you delivered got them all.
Arda Gyreshriek: Good. Just wish I...could have seen it...
Laranthir of the Wild: Hang on, Arda. Arda?

Cinematic:

Laranthir of the Wild: I'm sorry, Commander. Arda's gone. She was instrumental to the success of our mission. I'll see that she's honored.
<Character name>: Thank you. Arda was brave, and she did her duty. She will be missed. But we have to press on.
<Character name>: We are now poised to deliver the death blow to Zhaitan and its army. We can't afford to wait.
Laranthir of the Wild: I agree. Trahearne is waiting near Meddler's Summit to brief us on the final offensive. You go ahead and report to him there. I'll see to Arda.

Talking to Laranthir of the Wild:

Laranthir of the Wild: I'm sorry, Commander. I didn't know Arda long, I daresay none of us did, but while she was here, she was exactly the kind of soldier the Pact needs and can't afford to lose.
Talk end option tango.png I intend to see Zhaitan pay for every life wasted in this war.

My story[edit]

Ships of the Line.jpg

I took part in the mission to airlift the Searing Cauldron into Orr and fire it off against Zhaitan's army. The mission was a success, but only due to the bravery and sacrifice of our pilot, Arda Gyreshriek. Arda went missing after the blast, so Laranthir of the Wild and I set out to find her and bring her home safely.

We found Arda amid the wreckage of her airship, but the Risen had gotten to her first. I'm glad we had the chance to tell her that the mission succeeded before she died. We have little time to mourn her loss; the invasion of Orr is far from over. Laranthir promised to add Arda's name to the roster of honored dead while I returned to Trahearne for my next mission.

My story

Notes[edit]

  • In the first instance, after you defend the cauldron, the story objective will not update unless Laranthir is: alive, not in combat, and you have killed a specific Risen Abomination; even if you have already found Nekandezzar.
  • Arda will still have her normal greets after she dies.

Trivia[edit]

  • The name Nekandezzar may be a reference to one of four kings of Babylon, among whom Nebuchadnezzar IV was the last king of Babylon, similar to how Nekandezzar can be viewed as the last king (prince) of Orr.
