Lady Valette Wi
“I just want to balance this ledger. Then I'll gladly accept whatever fate you see fit.
Lady Valette Wi is the daughter of Lady Wi and Minister Wi, and the second cousin of Demmi Beetlestone. She is a well known violinist in Rurikton and has even played for Queen Jennah several times.[1]
Valette is eventually revealed as a member of the White Mantle who has been persuaded by Confessor Caudecus Beetlestone to fight against Jennah's royalists in the new Krytan civil war. She aids Caudecus multiple times during the insurrection but changes sides during the Siege of Divinity's Reach when she notices how the unhinged Caudecus kills his daughter Demmi in cold blood. Thanks to Valette's help, the Pact Commander's strike team is able to enter Caudecus's sanctuary and kill him, dealing a devastating blow to the White Mantle. Countess Anise ultimately chooses to spare Valette's life for her assistance instead of executing her for high treason, and she has Valette carry out her sentence as an agent bound to Anise in the Shining Blade, granting her the name Valette the Treasonous. |
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
Valette Wi was born to a noble family in Rurikton as the daughter of Minister Wi and Lady Wi. She is the second cousin of Demmi Beetlestone via Demmi's mother Lady Beetlestone who was Lady Wi's first cousin. After Lady Beetlestone's untimely death, Lady Wi stepped in as godmother to Demmi as she disliked Demmi's father, Legate Minister Caudecus Beetlestone.[2] Valette trained as a mesmer and as a violinist, becoming so renowned as a musician that she got to play to Queen Jennah herself on multiple occasions while tour guides would mention the trivia to tourists.[1]
After Demmi had suddenly fled from the Beetlestone manor in 1325 AE and gone undercover with the assistance of the Order of Whispers and Lady Wi who was secretly a Whispers agent, Caudecus set his sights on Lady Wi's daughter Valette. To earn Valette's favor, he gifted her with a violin, prompting Valette to promise to perform to him while she lamented Demmi's absence and her desire to reunite with her second cousin in the future.
After one of Valette's performances, Caudecus called her to a private audience where he discussed the severity of many threats to Kryta, ranging from bandits to centaurs and even a supposed charr plot against the kingdom. Valette admitted that she had grown frustrated with her father's loyalty to Queen Jennah who had seemingly not responded to the threats sufficiently enough and how her mother, Lady Wi, claimed to know more than she was willing to share with Valette, and how both of them had been treating her like a child. She decided to accept Caudecus's offer to strengthen Kryta, hoping that her parents would open up their eyes to the reality the kingdom was facing. She was grateful for Caudecus treating her like an adult and attended a later, secret meeting with other like-minded people. This would lead to her first contact with the White Mantle, and she would eventually adopt their radical views and plot against the crown.[3]
Living World Season 3[edit]
Out of the Shadows[edit]
Caudecus suddenly fled from the Royal Palace in 1329 AE, prompting the Shining Blade officer Canach, the Pact Commander, and members of the Dragon's Watch guild to track him down and bring him back by any means necessary.[4] When found in Bloodstone Fen experimenting on Bloodstone shards, Caudecus revealed himself not as a kidnapped victim of the White Mantle but as the current Confessor of the cult who planned to take over the Krytan throne from Queen Jennah by force. Caudecus attempted to have the Commander's party killed with the assistance of a subjugated jade construct but failed; even so, he had Valette use her mesmer magic to immobilize the Commander's party after the battle to have his reinforcements attack them.
However, the sudden arrival of a being introducing himself as Lazarus, the last mursaat whom a White Mantle faction led by High Inquisitor Xera had been attempting to revive behind Caudecus's back, led to the White Mantle splintering into two factions when Caudecus refused to submit to Lazarus, who in turn branded Caudecus as a heretic.[5] Lazarus slew several White Mantle in response to their defiance, which distracted Valette and allowed the Commander's party to break free from her spell. Canach used the provided opening to attack Caudecus, but the Confessor managed to escape in the nick of time when Valette teleported him and some surviving White Mantle to safety.
The Head of the Snake[edit]
After escaping, Caudecus gathered his resources, sent letters to the White Mantle in hopes of preventing them from joining Lazarus's schism while proclaiming the mursaat a "false god", tried to sway Krytans to his side with posted messages openly criticizing Queen Jennah's reign, and was rumored to have headed north for the Janthir. It is unknown if Valette accompanied him during the journey or if she was sent elsewhere at the time.[6] Caudecus eventually reemerged in Kryta by leading a siege on Divinity's Reach from Lake Doric in 1330 AE with a combined force of White Mantle and Bloodstone-crazed Harathi centaurs. The Confessor ordered one of his underlings, Minister Estelle, to assassinate Jennah during an assault on the Upper City, although the attempt was thwarted by a timely intervention from the Pact Commander and Logan Thackeray. The siege was quickly turned back by the Seraph, bolstered by Legionnaire Nylia Steelpaw's warband, due to the White Mantle's weakened state by defectors.
Witnessing his plans crashing around him, the Confessor was ultimately forced to take shelter as he sought out to unleash a "contingency plan" in his desperation. As he did so, Canach and a group of Shining Blade infiltrated the manor, but were all killed or captured. Following the loss of contact with Canach's squad, the Pact Commander, Demmi Beetlestone, and Countess Anise sneaked into the manor from the Hidden Falls Dock connecting to Lake Doric to bring down the traitorous minister for good.
When Caudecus was finally found in the Grand Salon in his manor alongside Valette, he had begun to go crazed from consuming large amounts of empowering Bloodstone. During the fight, the Confessor admitted to having his wife murdered and fatally shot Demmi with the misguided belief that they could become a family again in the Mists, which prompted Valette to switch sides as she realized how unhinged Caudecus had become. Before he could be caught, the Confessor retreated to a lower dungeon decorated with his own face across the walls.
By the time the Commander's party reached him with Valette's help, Caudecus had grown to become an unrecognizable version of himself, partially becoming a bloodstone abomination. Here, in the depths of his manor, Caudecus, the ambitious puppetmaster who had engineered so many plots against Kryta and the crown over the years, was finally killed.
Following the battle, Anise freed Canach from servitude thanks to his assistance in bringing Caudecus down. She intended to execute Valette next for high treason but was ultimately persuaded to spare the young noblewoman and offer her a chance to serve her sentence in the Shining Blade instead as the countess was one hand short following Canach's release.
One Path Ends[edit]
A few months later, the noblewoman was seen wearing more modest attire and had become known as Valette the Treasonous, a mocking reference to the lofty titles many White Mantle members had once had. Serving under Anise, Valette met with the Commander again while the latter was pursuing Balthazar, the returned God of War, who had been masquerading as Lazarus earlier to divide the White Mantle. Valette provided the Commander information about the history of the Eye of Janthir, a magical construct tied to the mursaat and the White Mantle, which was seeking out artifacts housing the separated aspects of the still slumbering, real Lazarus, and which the Commander was hoping would lead the strike team to Balthazar as well.
Later years[edit]
Valette continued serving Anise and the Shining Blade faithfully over the years to atone for her misdeeds, and she gradually earned the countess's respect. At some point, Anise wanted to ensure that the events involving the White Mantle insurrection and other threats to Kryta from that time would fully be put to rest. To achieve that end, the countess instructed Valette to gather any and all recollections and detailed accounts from persons of importance surrounding the crisis so the Shining Blade could use that information to make sure that Kryta would never again be brought to the brink. While carrying out her duty, Valette briefly met with the Pact Commander who decided to lend a hand in gathering the recollections. Valette confessed that Anise was treating her fairly despite the past crimes although the young Lady Wi also expressed regret that she could not rewrite her misdeeds from those years.

- Can you tell me more about what you need?
- It is Countess Anise's wish that Kryta never again face such trying times. The first step will be to gather eyewitness accounts while they are fresh in the mind from key figures such as yourself.
- And the second?
- We have agents working covertly to recover items of interest. To keep the field of operations secure, I can offer rewards for your attention in those regions.
- All right, I'll lend a hand. Let's get to it.
- You were involved yourself. Is Anise treating you fairly?
