Definition[edit]
Defining any consumable that grants effects as food seems a bit broad, there are many consumables that by "common sense categorization" wouldn't be food. Food might be better defined as consumables which can be produced through the cooking discipline. -- Nineaxis (talk) 00:21, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
- All cars having wheels does not make all things with wheels cars. Likewise, all foods being things that grant effects does not make all things that grant effects foods. I would define as a food "anything intended to have the form of an edible item". It so happens that all edible items encountered thus far grant one form or another of a temporary effect or immediate benefit, but they are not the sum of items that grant temporary effects. 97.118.203.172 06:07, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Aquisition[edit]
Shouldn't we list where the food can be bought? If an item is only available from a completed renown heart instead of a karma vendor in a capital, that's worth noting here, especially since there's enough room. Even if we don't list specifically who (if it's available from several vendors), something like "13 karma, renown heart vendors" or "13 karma, capital cities" would be helpful. ~Ekko (talk) 18:09, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Confuzzlements[edit]
Did anyone check if prices just changed between betas or if sales prices have something to do with reputation? I have a screenshot where Loaf of Bread, listed here for 14 costs 24 in Hoelbrak for her, but Walnut only costs 3 compared to the 35 on that page. --Ee 12:37, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

- Personality doesn't currently state whether it has any effect on merchant prices, only on NPC reactions and dialogue options. While it is common in other games for personality/reputation to affect prices, it would run counter to Anet's ethos of letting people play how they want without worrying about the "extreme consequences" of, say, playing a purely barbaric character.
- I think these discrepancies are simply ongoing pricing balance between the beta builds. I remember seeing one material that was listed here at 80 bronze, but in BWE1 it was only 4 bronze (numbers are from fuzzy memory, but I know it was an order-of-magnitude difference). - (edit conflict) /agree. We should expect that ANet will tweak all sorts of things between beta and release, including vendor prices. Other possibilities include:
- Prices varying across vendors (e.g. vendor A sells for 35 but vendor B asks 45 ).
- Prices affected by personality (e.g. meek vendors sell for less to Barbarous toons, friendly merchants give their discount to charismatic characters).
- Prices vary with region (e.g. asurans might hate bread, so it could sell for less in their city).
- Prices fluctuate with the market, like mats did in GW1 (e.g. if the supply of bread is high in the trading post, merchants lower their prices).
- Vendors discriminate based on race, creed, or profession (e.g. thieves are asked to pay a premium).
- Dynamic events affect prices (i.e. the pocket books of a grateful nation).

- For now, I think we should document under the assumption that prices are supposed to be fixed, but that ANet is continuing to tweak all sorts of data (names of items/disciplines/skills, skills, and prices). Sort By[edit]
If you sort by chef rank, the order goes 0 - 100 - 25 as 100 begins with a one and 25 with a two. Any way to make it sort in actual order, ie 0 - 25 - 100? Simooshy 19:11, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
- Break the number out into its own column, like the "Req. Level" column. Unless you add a leading 0, i.e. 025, it won't sort correctly as-is because that is a text field, not a numeric field. —Dr Ishmael 19:18, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
Stacking[edit]
My current assumption is that only the effect of a simple food on the same character can be active at any time. Is that so? At least that was my experiance during BWE3. --Ras 19:10, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
- i only cooked the food i never ate any,. Food comes in several types 1 Snacks, 2 Soup, 3 Meal, 4 Desserts, 5 Other/Unknown. Potions are a separate category as is Boosts and tonics, It would be nice to know what stacks with what and how many at a time. I do know you can have more than 1 kind of boost active at a time, and i assume you can only have 1 tonic active at a time, but i have no idea about the other consumables or if different FOOD TYPES stack. I understand that two like buffs will not stack, but will two different buffs exist and work simultaneously? Can you enjoy the benefits of a +precision nourishment buff and a +vitality nourishment buff at the same time?

Alcohol[edit]
Just curious if there's a planned page for Alcohol. It seems there's quite a variety. Overall Organization of Food using Categories[edit]
There seem to be several different pages that are all manual lists of things that all needs updated separately, mainly the Chef page and Food page. Each 'food' item is categorized differently (with or without category Category:Recipes / Category:Foods /sub-food category like Category:Snacks). I don't really know what I'm doing, but if someone could provide an example of the correct/best way to categorize something, I would go through and recategorize everything. Things like Bowl of Salsa somehow are not a food and things like Bowl of Simple Bean Chili are not a soup.
For my own cooking, I end up using my category based dynamic table to find things (Food Recipes), because it seems the most reliable (and is 8 lines long) and adjusts when things are added. If we could focus on the categories, do we think this could be easier? Page takes a while to load so maybe this isn't a good long term solution, and yes I'm just starting wiki'ing as this was frustrating me :) Nbaird2 01:09, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Should we reword the effect descriptions?[edit]
I know that they are verbatim from the game as they are, but the problem is that "sort by description" is alphabetical in nature, so they don't end up making much sense. All the "+10s" and +10%s" are grouped before the +20s, or even the +5%s. it's kinda pointless. It would be better to rewrite the descriptions to focus on the point before the number. So for example "Gain +20 Toughness when Stunned, Knocked Down, or Knocked Back," could be changed to "On Stun, Knock Down, Knocked Back, gain Toughness +20." This means that when sorted, it would end up alongside the other "on stun" effects, then it would end up between the Toughness +10 and Toughness +30, rather than between "gain +20 Power on Kills" and "Gain +20 Vitality" since "t" comes between "p" and "v".

Hey guys! Based on discussion here and our wiki's policy of being bold, I've made a major edit to this page. It has a layout that makes much mroe sense now. If people want to see foods grouped by soup/snack/etc, they'll go to those individual pages. I think this is where people go if they're looking for an effect, so organizing by effect makes more sense to me. However, this article still needs a bit more work. I'm going to plug away at it until it's finished, but any help would be wonderful.

- Moved, Seconded. For example what is the cheapest food you can buy? I've seen 16cp food, is there anything less than that? I want to figure out what food I can eat a lot of to get the eating achievement. Similarly with alcohol mentioned elsewhere -- what's the cheapest way to get the two -- eating & drinking achievements -- if you're ignoring the buffs?
Reorganising the sections[edit]
I think it makes much more sense that the foods corresponding to the primary stats are put at the top of the page. I tried moving Power to the top but it won't let me remove the entry in the middle of the page now so we have a duplicate if someone with permission can fix that.
Basically it would look much better if we have Power, Precision, Toughness, Vitality at the top, in that order descending. After that we can have Healing Power than Condition Damage and then start going into more niche food effects.

Auto-generation[edit]
This page is the perfect candidate for auto-generation from the various "food" pages. I would suggest that each section lists all foods affecting that attribute, and not try to make a food appear only once. On the contrary, it is much more useful, if I want to find a food that gives a bonus to vitality, for example, to find them all in the Vitality section, and not to have to search the whole page. --Alad 02:15, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
- Considering most foods have clear analogues at different levels, I think it's very useful to have a list of food "patterns", and the ability to find a food that fits a given pattern at a given level. Simply listing all individual attributes, and then all foods that affect a given attribute, seems like it would make it much harder to notice the patterns for someone who isn't already aware of them.

- We will probably put the effects in records like item stats. Right now we don't have any code for setting properties, but other records like item stats will be implemented with #arraymaps, so we can wait until then to do buffs from foods. - I have some experience with SMW, and I would not recommend using #arraymap for this. There are over 350 items, which could be a problem.
- I implemented a new feature in my food database, which allows you to automatically create wiki tables that you use here. You can type "wiki" (without quotes) in the search field, and it will make a copy-pasteable code instead of the usual list. (for example, "wiki ascending gold" will make a table of Gold Find items).
Achievement[edit]
The Alcohol page lists what the least expensive way (through money or karma) how to acquire the Thirst Slayer achievement. Should this page somewhere tell what the least expensive item is that you can buy using either Karma or money to complete the All you Can Eat title? I understand the title can be completely crafted, but some may want to throw money or karma at the title, but do it in the least expensive way possible. Usaf1a8xx (talk) 21:30, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
- I don't think it's that important, since you only need 800 bites and you can get food for 1 off the TP. Total cost = 8 . The specific food will vary, depending on market conditions. If you aren't efficient and you buy from vendors at 20 , it will still only cost you 1 60 .
- In contrast, you need 100,000 drink points, so if you buy at 10 instead of 5 , you're going to pay an extra 50 , which is a lot of cash to spend on a few achievement points. 75.37.16.99 21:44, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
Suggestion: xp vs. % xp[edit]

Format Modification Request[edit]
Please could we include Feasts, Pots, Giant versions of recipes along with the regular versions? These are group oriented foods that are used widely in World vs World.

Total Overhaul[edit]
I've begun adding in food items that are missing, only to realize the list is enormous and would bloat this page worse than the original incarnations of the Gift of Mawdrey II and Generosity's Gift pages. As it stands, the current page has either 355 or 455 entries (I may have lost count on a 100) WITH duplications for foods with non-stat effects, while the current "food" list without duplications sits at 417 unique pages. Perhaps it would be prudent to overhaul the page to give the basics of what "food" is, then provide a category list, then follow-up by going in to individual food item pages and categorizing them directly, or creating child pages for each core stat/effect. Feast version availability column?[edit]

- The food row style is created with this template Template:Food table row. There, everything is done automatically, using semantic mediawiki properties. This means: Each food page has a duration, a level and a description which values are passed to each row; no need to copy them or put them by hand.
- So if we want to add the feast column, we can either do it by hand (which I do not favour at all) or create the [[Property:Has equivalent food]] and set the parameter
equivalent food
at the Feast Template:Item infobox (My favourite!). - I.e. we must add to 274 feast pages the parameter
| equivalent food = <Food name>
to the infobox, as well as creating the property and adjusting the template and the infobox (this is my part!). - For comparison:
- Number of feasts: 274
- Number of food: 571

Off-topic, regarding the 500 cooking food: the recipe API states: Meal, Dessert, etc. and not Feast but the item API however states Feast, so hard to say what they are exactly. Magic Find filter not working properly[edit]
For some reason when using the magic find filter, some magic find foods get filtered out. Example: Steak with Winterberry Sauce —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 37.120.199.38 (talk) at 00:50, 14 November 2019 (UTC).
- The food rows rely on manually set filters, due to the amount of the available food items it may happen that some filters are missing. Indeed, the row for Steak with Winterberry Sauce was missing the filter "magicfind". I have added it together with two other missing ones as well as removed the duplicate Sweet Bean Bun with missing filters (it is set below again with correct filters), see here

The food overview https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Food is missing levels, duration, picture, effects and feast key. In addition the filter options in the filter parameters section is sometimes missing, sometimes looking ugly (with double "[" and "]" where a picture should be). Just loading the page will yield the problem. It is known that this could happen with the march update, and the linked pages probably need to be purged. I don't have a wiki account, but the problem should be easy enough to reproduce. If not, then the bug has been solved already :-)

Feedback 2020/09/24[edit]
When looking for Oysters Gnashblade (+70 Expertise, -10% Incoming Damage) with the food filter, after clicking the -10% Incoming Damage button, they do not come up, only the feasts come up that give -10% reduction. Clicking the 2 filters "-10% Incoming Damage" and "No feast" results in no items showing[edit]

- The filter "-10% Incoming Damage" is in the ascended row (see also Ascended feast), which are obiviously all feasts, hence these filter options return no result. The button you are looking for is "Reduced incoming damage", this one is working with "No feast".

- That's not really solving it either. I think the problem is that we had "-10% Incoming Damage" (for ascended feasts only) and "Reduced incoming damage" (for all), of course I (as a wiki user) would click the first button as this button text is much easier to understand (basically exactly how the food effect describes it).
- Hence, I removed the complete ascended filter button row, rewrote the defensive filter buttons (e.g. -X% Incoming Damage instead of Reduced incoming damage) and capitalized the filter button text to match the food effect spelling. Now the filter buttons themself shouldn't cause any confusion. --Tolkyria (talk) 18:12, 21 October 2021 (UTC)
