Cooking is an advanced craft[edit]

Some interesting dialogue from TotalBiscuit's explorable dungeon video.

Hellia Fataar: is cooking the most complicated craft in this game? making swords, armors and jwelery is easy as pie,, except pies in this game. :P
Linsmer: yep! We are going to call it an advanced craft
Linsmer: you need to travel, gather materials, spend karma and gold.
Linsmer: you also need more inventory/storage
Hellia Fataar: you can say that again, I have my backpack filled with ingredients, no room for loot. :)
Linsmer: but out of all the crafts, it plays with and takes advantage of the discovery system the most.
Linsmer: It also interacts with a lot of the rewards systems in the game which is neat.
Linsmer: some of the food buffs are really cool. My favorite right now is Bowl of Ascalonian Salad

I'm going to boldly guess that Linsmer is Linsey Murdock playing a mesmer? :D --zeeZUser ZeeZ Sig.png (talk) 23:31, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

Consumables ?[edit]

Do the items created need to go into a table of Consumable with effects?? Rudhraighe 07:08, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Consumable. If once we start learning more of everything they can craft and the list of everything starts to get long, I was thinking of suggesting we only list the finished products on the crafting discipline pages and make another page for the stuff that's just used to make other stuff. So for cook like Pile of Salt and Pepper might go on a [[Cooking Component]]s page while only the food consumables like Loaf of Bread would stay on this page. For now since we don't know much I figured this is fine, though that consumable page does need some love. User Mattsta Sig1.jpgUser Mattsta Sig2.jpg 07:16, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
I didn't notice you had the page link in there. Yeah, they need to go in their as well. User Mattsta Sig1.jpgUser Mattsta Sig2.jpg 07:33, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Separating the cooking components out from the main chef page would make it less useful for those who want to do a browser search for a particular ingredient and find all the things "pile of salt and pepper" can be used in, for example. As a user of the information, I'd rather have a complete list on one page than multiple lists on multiple pages (though breaking it out into their own pages in addition to the master list would be fine too). I think that just means THEY did a typo too... I suggest we name it 'walnut' anyway. :) --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 188.36.145.83 (talk).
It's probably a typo on their end since the main ingredient doesn't match up with the title. It'll be good to notify them of this on the beta forums.Galmuth 12:42, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
If it's a typo, it's likely a double typo, both the Waknut/Walnut and Breath/Bread. I'm not familiar enough with the world/mythos of Guild Wars yet, so to me it could have been food named after a location or character. Especially since it's was labeled Breath, I figured it was possibly named after a NPC. XeroKitsune 05:32, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
Spelling was changed in BWE2 — June 8-10, 2012, pages adjusted to reflect. XeroKitsune 12:18, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

In pretty much every game I have played with cooking as a craft the items are things, that from the sounds it I wouldn't feed my dog...I'm loving that there are things like cheese pizza in this list :D Wynterarwynrose 04:28, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

I agree, it's defiantly a more palatable set of food then most MMOs I've played. Interesting bit about the Cheese Pizza, it showed up in the ingredient area of the cooking discovery. So there should be Pizza with topping(s).XeroKitsune 17:16, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

BWE2 Recipe Dump[edit]

Here's the full recipe list I was able to discover during BWE2: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtYfIclFDvQHdElkRGllVmd6UTV3VnZsajVqT0t1cnc

Notes:

  • This is as far and deep as I was able to get with all craft materials available from karma/coin vendors, gathering, and working the broker. Many ingredients needed simply did not exist in the world (particularly lemons and poppy seeds), so the list is incomplete even at low levels.
  • Does not include recipes learned from recipe scrolls.
  • Shown in order they appear in my recipe book ingame.
  • Ingredients shown in order they appear in the recipe book.
  • Some effects paraphrased for brevity.
  • Items without effects listed cannot be eaten, and are only used for further crafting
  • Items with a Craft number listed can be used to craft at the specified skill level.
  • Placeholder items have specific text in their tooltip indicating their current effect is placeholder until the listed effect is worked into the game.
  • Bowl of Garlic Spinach Sautee appears to be the only item that does not list a duration.
  • Bowl of Simple Poultry Soup does appear twice, with two different recipes.

I didn't think to go into the depth and detail you did, but I did manage to get around ~240 after this BWE. Poppy seeds and yams were both obtainable in WvW gathering with higher lvl tools https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhFqD7DFWZXpdHJYak5WQXNsVlZmM3BGQ3J1UHY4N2c&pli=1#gid=0
here's a quick list of 20 or so which were craftable with a few exceptions. I'm sure the exact recipes and buffs will show up eventually. 66.189.137.46 02:45, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Chef Rank[edit]

At rank 200 you become an "Apprentice Chef". Currently the templates for recipes are such that they just display "3rd rank". Anyone able to change the template? Simooshy 18:24, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

"Item difficulty" ambiguity[edit]

The way item difficulty is currently listed is ambiguous; is is difficulty to make or difficulty to use in further recipes? Both pieces of information are very valuable to the aspiring chef, so I propose both be shown in the tables as separate entries.

Cinnamon sugar, for instance, I'm pretty sure was craftable at zero cooking skill - it was the first combinations I successfully guessed at. My family puts it on buttered toast. In the current tables, it's listed as difficulty 125; is that perhaps difficulty to use, rather than difficulty to make? - Asterai

the Pile of Cinnamon and Sugar entry on the table may be incorrect. Normally there are 3 levels of an item 1) the level of Discovery. 2)the necessary level to make More of the item. 3) the level necessary to Use the item in Another Recipe. Rudhraighe 00:53, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Organization[edit]

I know there are still tons of combinations left to be found, but would it work better to try to put lower ranking foods/ingredients at the top of the lists, and higher ranking ones towards the bottom. That way if people are looking for ideas of what they can craft at their current level it should be easier to find. With what there is now I don't think there will need to be separate tables for different ranks, but maybe some kind of divider could come in handy for later?. ~Ao Allusir 12:21, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

I think skill requirement is harder to remember than recipice or ingredient names. Sortable table would be nice nevertheless. Mediggo 12:42, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Jeweler has one added at the bottom if you scroll all the way down (might be something for the top), something like this could be useful for cooking. ~Ao Allusir 12:50, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Dpl tables[edit]

Would using DPL to create the tables be out of the question? It'd make it a lot easier to keep it up-to-date since information would only need to be added/changed in one spot. Rari 09:15, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

- Yes please! Looking at the code for this would be perfect. If the recipe template is ironed out well, could have a lot of the other requests here generated. For example, create a table of all recipes that require ingredient X User:nbaird September 5, 2012

Sort by effect?[edit]

Cooking seems very confusing, as each one does different things that has nothing to do with the names (like a "mighty sword" gives Power, but what does an "Apple Pie" provide?). I think it would be helpful if the effects that each recipe grants was listed in one of the vertical columns of the recipe lists, and that if you wanted to you could sort by effect (presumably alphabetical by effect name, then by value). That way, you sorted soups by effect, for example, you would see:
Bowl of Red Meat Stock___| Gain Might on Dodge 20% chance
Bowl of Onion Soup______| Gain Might on Dodge 30% chance
Bowl of Vegetable Stock__| Precision +20
Bowl of Tomato Soup_____| Precision +30
even though they are of different skill levels. Is that change possible?

Recipes now make more than one[edit]

As of last night's stresstest, various recipes can produce different quantities. For example, if I craft a Bowl of Vegetable Stock I get one bowl of veg stack. Great. But if I craft a Grape Pie with the filling and a ball of dough, it now produces 3 pies. How are to put this info in? Simooshy 16:25, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Pile of Tangy Seasoning[edit]

Looks like either the recipe or the level is wrong. Or it has been removed from the game. I don't want to remove it because I am not 400 yet myself. Can any high level cooks confirm this? Lucky.9421 05:42, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Sorting / Recipe required / Output[edit]

I myself found already some recipes but never tried to discover the same stuff without recipe. I assume all the stuff you get from recipes can't be discovered without the recipe right? Saw already at some of the pages of the stuff you can produce that it tells that a recipe is required and where to buy it but this shouldbe noted in the table here on the Chef page too that new people don't just try to discover that stuff and think it is bugged - without checking further and looking at the specific page. Also I saw some sorting alphabetically and some sorting by crafting level reqs. I think it should be grouped by crafting level reqs(sort there first) and within the same level sorted again alphabetically. Makes it easier to go through the list from start to the level you are at the moment and check if you got everything discovered. Then we have some recipes like Lemon Bars that produce more than one item(here three). Should be noted also. Looking much different if you see at first view that the same ingredients produce 3 of the same stuff(instead of having to use the ingredients 3 times that amount). Making it easier to scout for good stuff that is cheap to produce. - lordmd 09:29, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

I agree that there should be an indication if an item requires a purchased recipe before it can be crafted. It's not immediately obvious at first glance which items need a recipe (like Poached Egg, for instance), which can be a hindrance if somebody is using this list as a quick guide for discoverable recipes. - Zaxares 04:49, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Why are tables collapsed by default now?![edit]

It is very annoying that I have to go and open every table every time I refresh the page, completely defeating the purpose of being able to quickly and easily search the list by ingredient. PLEASE whoever made this change, change it back! I've been trying to add new recipes as I discover them, but honestly it's getting to be such a pain that I'm discouraged from doing it unless I have an hour to spend fighting the wiki. :P Fleep 14:53, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

Recipe Sheets and Vendors[edit]

At some point Anet implemented a change between headstart and a week or so ago, wherein karma purchased recipe sheets went from account bound to soulbound. So it was no longer feasible to just buy things on whatever alt I was meandering through with... this meant I had to go back with one chef and find all the Recipe Sheets I'd missed earlier. This was an insanely arduous task given there was no list, and some aren't easily identified as to where they came from.

I'd like to propose one of two things. Either a page for recipe sheets for cooking (and other craft skills) where you can see all at once where they come from and have a summary of data for shopping. (I'd also like a similar sheet for shopping purposes for karma-purchased cooking materials.) Or, on this page, /Cooking, add a column to the table that has an icon (or add an icon somewhere after the name or some such) if there is a cooking sheet required to learn the recipe. This can link to the renown heart vendor or other vendor/karma vendor/dynamic event vendor etc that sells the recipe.

I've already been reviewing the renown heart vendors and creating a list of information for these, and revisiting the event vendors I know about, if a field/flag were added for DPL queries for the tables, I could easily go in and edit the appropriate pages to add information. It could be this already exists and I don't know it -- source of recipe, discovery, recipe sheet or automatic. Kalea 06:12, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Simply because I think this is a novel idea and I still haven't seen anywhere on the wiki with them compiled, I'm "bumping" this. It would be fairly easy to make a page called "Recipe Sheet" or something similar, that had a compiled list of every recipe sheet in game. We could split them up by discipline, followed by rarity, then name. It would also let us find out specific recipe sheets for trays or bulks of armor, since they vary per level. And of course, it would show all recipes on there as well.
I would like to point out though that recipes are no longer soulbound, they are account bound again. Turns out that was unintentional, and has been fixed. Juicearific ~talk 15:53, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
I agree as well. I started my own list just yesterday for this exact purpose. If this becomes reality, I would really like it.
Note that there is a list of sorts started at the bottom of the [[List of Karma Merchant Items]]. Perhaps that list could be augmented or used (or replaced) by your idea. Daddicus 23:59, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

expandable vs. collapsible[edit]

At the moment all tables are collapsible, per default open but can be collapst. I would like to chang that to expandable, per default collapst, but can be expanded. Because when I read this article I am finding myself colapsing all tables and then open one and search there. Though on this suggestion? - Yandere Talk to me... 00:24, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

If you want to look at single tables, I would use the table of contents to navigate. Click a section, find what you want, click back to go back to top of page, click another section... Personally I find collapsible to be generally not useful and expandable to be annoying. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 02:51, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
I'm with Dr Ishmael on this one, see my comment above. When you are actually contributing to the wiki, having the tables all collapsed by default makes it very time consuming to search and make sure your updates were added properly with the constant scrolling and opening every time you refresh. As a user of the wiki, I'm often using my browser search to look for all the recipes with a single ingredient, and this is also hampered by first having the scroll down and open every table before I can search. I'm pretty strongly in the "open by default" camp on this one. Fleep 13:55, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Need another column[edit]

The recipe lists need another column: How you can get the recipe. Options I can think of now might include discovery, karma, cash, loot, and/or reward (although I don't know if all of those are legitimate). A very narrow column would be fine, and symbols could be used instead of words.

Especially with Chef recipes, they are all over the map (literally and figuratively). It would be nice to know up front that the recipe you're gathering ingredients for can actually be discovered via discovery. Daddicus 05:12, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

The only three methods are automatic (I think all Cooking Ingredients and Seasonings; Refinement and Crafting Components for other disciplines), discovery, and recipe sheets (which can be purchased with either cash or karma). I'm 99% sure you can't get recipe sheets as loot, and I haven't seen them as rewards for anything yet.
This has been mentioned before and definitely needs to be added. It requires a new parameter in the {{recipe}} template, but I've been putting that off until we get a new extension installed (Semantic MediaWiki) that will require a complete overhaul of how recipes work on this wiki. And no one else has bothered to do it in the meantime. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 05:19, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
Well, that template might just explain things well enough for me to figure it out. Thanks!
Tomorrow night, though. I have to learn how to use the sandbox, too, and it's bedtime for Bonzo here. :) Daddicus 05:51, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

I think another column stating what the effect is when you eat it would be nice. llandale 17:30, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Celebratory Steak vs Celebratory Meat[edit]

Right now there are 2 recipes in the list: Celebratory Steak (req. 25) and Celebratory Meat (req. 50). Both link to the http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Celebratory_Steak page and are recipes sold by Vaastas Meatslayer . The Recipe itself is called Recipe: Celebratory Meat but the product you can make after learning is the Celebratory Steak. I would suggest to remove the item Celebratory Meat from the list, due to not being the actual product you can make and also a false requirement and a false recipe. ( it says 2 slabs of red meat instead of 1 )

Celebratory Meat 50 2 Slab of Red Meat Slab of Red Meat 1 Head of Garlic Head of Garlic 1 Pile of Salt and Pepper Pile of Salt and Pepper 1 Chili Pepper Chili Pepper

Recipe template[edit]

Listing the recipe/level for each item here and again on the item page makes it very easy to have incorrect data, so I changed the page to pull from the item pages. One thing that would be useful to add to the template used (Recipe/Requires) in the future is the number of items produced, since that ranges from 1 to 5... Krenn 18:53, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Any thoughts on this? Should we separate it or would SMW have better performance? --JonTheMon 02:38, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
Since no one else felt bold enough (and we can't do SMW for recipes until we get the Semantic Forms extension), I split out the recipes to separate pages by category. I left dyes here since we already have a dye article and the recipes wouldn't really fit into that page very well. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 02:54, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
Oh, now I notice that Jon had added a couple comments here. I just tested the transclusion of cached queries (since I created brand new pages and didn't bother prettifying them at all), nnnnnnope - still got a 502. SMW would definitely have better performance, but like I already said, we can't (easily) annotate recipes until we get the #arraymap function from Semantic Forms. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 02:59, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

Food by Effect[edit]

Not everyone looking up recipes is looking for the recipe and crafting required. Some people are looking up recipes for the buff they give. If you're just tying to discover recipes, this page does great. However, if you're trying to make, say, Condition Damage food for a level 37 player, this list is useless. To this end, I made a Food by Effect user page. I think that would be a valuable resource for the general public, but I'm pretty new to wikis so I'm not entirely sure how to proceed.

I'm thinking that the best thing to do would be to replace the Food page with this page. Food seems to be doing essentially the same thing, but it's full of obsolete information, it's missing recipes, and it's organized poorly. Organizing by food type (Dessert, Soup, etc.) makes sense if you're looking for recipes, but not if you're looking for effects. I think it would be better to replace the current food page than to create a new page which serves essentially the same function and have to clean up the old food page.

I'm also not sure whether to use what I have now, or to finish my userpage first. On my page, I've excluded all recipes that come from a recipe sheet or have a 15m duration. I've also excluded Poison, Burn, and Chill duration foods because, frankly, they're terrible. I see no reason to take +15% chill duration over +40% condition duration. However, for the public page they should be included in the interests of completeness. I also want to add a "duration" column to the tables. I'll need to add all that (and reorganize a bit to accommodate) before I'll consider this page done. It's a great page in its current form, but its not finished. Would it be better to make the change now and then fix it on the food page, or should I fix my userpage first and then make the change?

Thanks for the input!   -Dacromir 16:07, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Great idea and nicely done. I hope enough like it that it gets put into the main wiki area. Daddicus 01:26, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
It's definitely an improvement over what's on Food right now. If you change the page now, someone might update it for you first. Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 02:13, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
To reiterate what I mentioned on that page, I think it needs to be comprehensive and therefore include recipe food and items that seem to not be as useful. --JonTheMon 04:40, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes, it definitely needs to include everything. No question about that. It's documenting all the food we have. I'd also like to add a "duration" column to all of the tables.
I think I'm going to go ahead and make the change. Feedback here seems positive, and the policy is to "be bold", right? I think my list is easier to navigate and read, so I'm going to boldly make the replacement. Someone will undo if they agree. I'll post a to-do list with things needed to finish in the talk page.   -Dacromir 16:08, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
Well, instead of replacing this page, make it a sub-page of Chef for now and just link it along with the other parts. --JonTheMon 16:14, 6 November 2012 (UTC)
He means replacing the tables on the Food page, not this page. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:16, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Upper or lower case "cooking ingredient"[edit]

I noticed that Dr. Ishmael changed an entry from "Cooking Ingredient" to the same with a lower-case i. This was apparently done because that page has a lowercase i in its title.

However, shouldn't the corrective action have been to change the page to an uppercase I, and at the same time put in a disambiguation? (I would do both, but I don't know how to make a disambiguation.) Daddicus 01:31, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Dye Table[edit]

Dye table disappeared due to category renaming. The only thing I got to work was undoing the dye page edits, so that's what I did. We probably need to take a look at the table and see why the category rename didn't take properly. --Gylisan 04:03, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

Feedback 2017/06/15[edit]

you need to be able to see the item stats when you hover over an items link on any page The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.81.171.232 (talk) at 16 June 2017 (UTC).

If you're looking for an easy way to see food by their stat line, check the Food page. This page is for the chef crafting discipline, so the charts are more focused on the recipes, not the stats.--Rain Spell (talk) 04:23, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Missed Opportunity[edit]

Why are there no recipes using the flesh of the numerous aquatic creatures in the world? Fish of all kinds - including tuna, shark, salmon, even one called Tasty Fish, thundershrimps, all manner of crabs, both aquatic and terrestrial, even Sand Sharks! All of these could be crafted into scrumptious food items. To go even further, the flesh some of the less delectable-sounding creatures, like the mutated, toxic and electric varieties, could used in creating offensive weapon bundles, like poison darts, choking gas bombs, etc. What happened in development that completely missed the boat on seafood? SigShaneTalk 11:19, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

Intriguing idea, but Anet devs do not habitually look at these wiki talk pages. You should bring this conversation over to the forums if you'd like more eyes, especially Anet's, on it. Note that even if a dev doesn't respond, they do read such suggestions. Make sure your title has [Suggestion] in its title. G R E E N E R 15:13, 14 February 2018 (UTC)
I can answer this! One of the devs was desperate to get a fishing activity into the game, so she deliberately prevented aquatic recipes from being added to Chef, so they could be introduced alongside the activity. (Source.) I'm surprised we don't have a trivia note about this already, so I'm going to add one. Thanks for calling it to my attention! --Idris (talk) 15:47, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

Chef 500[edit]

Um can somebody start the edit of this page by noting that chef goes to 500 now? And that you get a mail from that NPC at 425. Which leads to having to craft the chef's platter. including all the sub recipes that it requires might also help. Just a thought. Trivia section - Fishing[edit]

After the End of Dragons First Look Livestream part of the trivia section has 'expired', specifically this sentence: "There are currently no plans to add fishing to the game, however.". Fishing will be added to the game with the new expansion. --82.181.170.51 19:02, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
