History is like a pair of dice—many-sided and loaded with chance. Every story has multiple angles. Most of us just accept what we're taught, but that can be dangerous.

Scholar Glenna

Scholar Glenna is a Durmand Priory scholar, who serves as a vendor for Magnetite Shards in every raid. The associated raid encounter must be completed before you can buy its items from her. She also offers to buy any raid-themed miniature for 40 Magnetite Shards.

Biography[edit]

Spirit Vale[edit]

Interested in historical and magical findings, Glenna joined the ranks of the Durmand Priory. Having heard gossip among her fellow scholars of strange magic phenomena in northern parts of the Heart of Maguuma which had begun occurring after the Elder Dragon Mordremoth's demise in 1328 AE, she set out to investigate the jungle.[1]

After entering Spirit Vale, Glenna happened upon a Pact camp full of demoralized and injured soldiers from the Maguuma campaign who were recovering from a bandit raid which had resulted in several kidnappings. She did what she could to comfort them, being unable to do much else because the dangers in the jungle were too great for any of them to overcome. In the meantime she began writing a field journal. She also investigated strange ley rifts and mastered traversing through them safely.

When a group of mercenaries answered the Pact's call for help, Glenna acted as a merchant to these raiders, selling them various useful items in exchange for magnetite shards. During these interactions she also heard the raiders' tales of what they had encountered in the jungle, which piqued her interest.

Salvation Pass[edit]

Once the raiders had cleared the obstacles in Spirit Vale and defeated Sabetha the Saboteur who had been leading the bandits, Glenna journeyed westward to Salvation Pass where she set up shop to offer supplies to other adventurers seeking to uncover the secrets of the pass, including what the bandits, who had been kidnapping people, were up to. She followed the trail of brave adventurers who had fought a safe passage through the jungle, and discovered the corpse of Slothasor which she theorized had been mutated from the magical fallout of Mordremoth's death.

Pressing onward, Glenna passed through an abandoned bandit fort which the raiders had cleared as well as a mass of bodies thrown off the cliff. What caught her eye was a deactivated asura gate leading somewhere in Brisban Wildlands, raising more questions than answers in her mind. She met with the recently freed Pact squad leader, Bennett, who revealed to her the ordeals he had been through in the hands of the bandits who the raiders had saved him from. The bandits had turned out to be working for Matthias Gabrel and the White Mantle cult in preparation for something big involving macabre sacrifices with the Maguuma Bloodstone. Although Matthias had been slain by the raiders, more cultists still lurked deeper in the jungle. Glenna began theorizing about the White Mantle's goals and what part the Bloodstone played in it and decided to investigate further, traveling to the White Mantle's base of power in the region, the Stronghold of the Faithful.

During her investigations in the Forsaken Thicket, Glenna encountered an anomaly and threw a rock at it to test what would happen. The rock passed through the anomaly unaffected, prompting Glenna to conduct more experiments which revealed that the anomaly was like a window to other places, showing glimpses of figures through the mist.[1]

Stronghold of the Faithful[edit]

Angered by the White Mantle's reign of terror and the horrors their hundreds of captives had been going through over the decades, Glenna continued her journey westward, this time reaching the outskirts of the Stronghold of the Faithful whose intimidating gates and sentries prevented deeper exploration. While scouting the area, she updated her field journal and would allow any passing ally to read her notes to better understand what had been transpiring in the thicket. She also adopted a lovesick rabbit.

Meeting up with the raiders who had come to help siege the stronghold, Glenna decided to take a more proactive approach than before to end the White Mantle's threat to the jungle and Tyria as a whole, and volunteered to accompany the raiders on their mission. She had crafted custom bombs made from her own blend of black powder, magnetite shards, and a few other compounds. The bombs' resulting shrapnel blast would shatter everything in range, including any magical barriers. When the raiders asked if they could carry some bombs, she denied them the pleasure: according to her, the bombs were highly unstable and would explode from the slightest bump, so they would need an expert like her to handle them.[2] Due to carrying the bombs, however, she required an escort to keep her safe. Some raiders were less than pleased about escort duty as none volunteered for it but eventually they managed to settle the matter and escort Glenna to the gates. The more playful raiders would tease her by constantly ordering her to hurry to them, leading to Glenna's rising frustration and her eventually snapping that she was not their puppy. She did get her revenge on the raiders, however, by stating that she would call for them if she ever needed expert lever pullers.

As the raiders advanced deeper into the stronghold, Glenna instructed them to use the ley lines and rifts created from Mordremoth's death to bypass White Mantle defenses and defeat the defenders. Upon reaching the courtyard, they faced the Keep Construct summoned by Xera, the High Inquisitor who Matthias Gabrel and Sabetha the Saboteur had been working for. In a prideful taunt, Xera and her minions had accidentally revealed that the cult was planning to resurrect Lazarus, the purported last mursaat, whom the White Mantle had once worshipped as the Unseen Ones. Glenna was unsure how Xera was going to accomplish the task, however, and if Lazarus even was in the stronghold to begin with, although she speculated that the cult would try to use the magic within bloodstone shards to aid in the ritual.

Upon the construct's defeat, Xera's mesmer magic, amplified by consumed bloodstone shards, turned the stronghold into the Twisted Castle, a maze the raiders would have to navigate as she attempted to stall them from pursuit to finish the resurrection ritual. Glenna used the opportunity to inform the raiders of what she knew as well as her many theories, letting them know about the significance of bloodstone and how it tied to mursaat, titans, and sacrifices.

While the raiders battled Xera, Glenna investigated the courtyard and discovered various artifacts and books that revealed or hinted at intriguing information about the cult's actions. Upon the High Inquisitor's defeat, Glenna congratulated the raiders and suggested that they investigate the chamber below where they found an empty stasis chamber, unsure if Lazarus had been killed or if he had successfully revived and escaped. Glenna tried to lighten the troubled mood by showing sympathy towards Salvation Pass's Slothasor which, according to her, had just wanted a hug, leading to an awkward moment between her and the raiders who were unsure how to react to her words.

Bastion of the Penitent[edit]

In 1330 AE, Glenna traveled to the crater which had once held the Maguuma Bloodstone in Bloodstone Fen and discovered a strange portal within. After venturing through it, she found herself in a cave which led to a wider area containing what she identified as the mursaat's jade construct above which floated a smaller pyramid shaped construct which she recognized from history books as the Eye of Janthir. Believing that the constructs would not have been placed there unless they were meant to guard a location containing potential treasure or at least discoveries of historical importance, she sent word to the raiders who hurried to her location.[3]

Once the raiders had defeated the jade construct guarding the entrance, they and Glenna witnessed the Eye fleeing deeper into the cave as the scholar explained the Eye's significance in the Bloodstone sacrifices performed by the mursaat and the White Mantle in the past. As they pursued the pyramid construct, they came across what appeared to be an intimidating fortress at first glance. Upon finding a way inside, they discovered several skewered bodies spread all over, and Glenna remarked again and again that whatever had happened there was not her fault. As they explored the oddly well preserved bodies, letters and other objects within, they gradually realized that they had entered a correctional facility for the mursaat's political prisoners, including not only humans but jotun and potentially Forgotten as well. Glenna continued with her gallows humor, irking the raiders, but she quickly explained that her quips were a coping mechanism to deal with the carnage around her.

After activating and defeating another mursaat construct, they continued their investigation deeper into the facility while realizing that someone or something had to have caused the deaths of the inmates. They soon came across the culprit, the monstrous Samarog, who held broken shackles and was accompanied by a human and a jotun prisoner, while the Eye of Janthir observed them from above. The raiders eventually bested Samarog and his minions who turned out to have been forced to fight on his behalf. The clues in the controlled minions' agonized cries led to Glenna speculating that Samarog had been an imate promoted as the warden of the facility, and had been left to run it by his own standards after his mursaat masters' demise centuries ago. Glenna came to believe that the Eye was deeply involved with the facility, and also remarked about sensing celestial energy which might suggest the veil between Tyria and the Mists being thin there for some reason.

While Glenna stayed behind to explore her surroundings, the raiders pursued the Eye deeper into the facility, eventually entering Solitary Confinement where they met with an elderly human chained in place while the Eye hovered above him. Deciding to release him to ask some questions, the raiders broke the chains, only for the man to warn them about the consequences before a strange voice addressed them all with glee. A demonic creature, Deimos, entered the scene while relishing at torturing the prisoner's psyche and naming him Saul D'Alessio, the famed founder of the White Mantle who had vanished centuries ago. The raiders defeated Saul's manifested sins as Deimos tried to break their spirits. As his power waned, Deimos ended up drawing the party into the demonic realm in order to finish them off there. However, the demon was defeated for good when, against his expectations, Saul overcame his personal demons and joined the raiders' side. Following the demon's demise, the party returned to the physical realm. The victory was bittersweet, however, as Saul passed away soon after, finally freed from centuries of torment.

Glenna joined the raiders once the area had been secured, having listened to Saul's dying confession about the tortures he had lived through and how the Eye of Janthir had sustained him and the other inmates for centuries with its power to turn them into the mursaat's puppets. She postulated that the Eye disappearing after Deimos's defeat had ended its power over Saul, allowing the tortured man to finally pass away. She also reminded the raiders that as a scholar, she was well aware of history being more complicated than simplified depictions of good and evil, and that Saul had tried to reform himself in his later years to atone for his crimes. When the raiders suggested to keep Saul's presence in the bastion a secret from Krytan authorities to not stir the kingdom while a present day White Mantle crisis was ongoing, Glenna agreed with the assessment and promised to see to it that Saul's remains would be handled respectfully.

With the miasma surrounding the lower levels of the bastion clearing following Deimos's defeat and the Eye's departure, Glenna agreed that the raiders should explore the facility thoroughly to uncover more clues although she was hesitant to venture down as she was still recovering from the horrifying events she had witnessed in the facility. She also expressed regret that the Eye of Janthir had seemingly vanished for good as she would have wanted to study it to learn more about its connection to the mursaat and its origins.
