Dzalana
Dzalana, sometimes called the Dzalana Expanse,[1] lies along the northeastern edge of Elona. It was never settled or heavily explored by humanity but appears to have some temples and settlements of unknown origin. The princes of Vabbi have claimed that Dzalana is the homeland of the heket and harpies.[2] It is said to have extensive canyonlands.[3]
History[edit]
Early history[edit]
Dzalana has been seen as the homeland of the heket and harpies for generations.[2] When human tribes began colonizing the Elonian continent from 205 BE onward,[4] they built the Citadel of Dzagon on what would eventually become the eastern border of the Province of Vabbi to keep watch over the wilderness of Bazhda and Dzalana that lay beyond it and safeguard the Merchant Princes of Vabbi, as well as the rest of the Elonian provinces, from the dangers lurking in the wilds. Dzagonur Bastion grew next to the citadel to supply the troops garrisoned there and became a hub of activity for mercenaries, recruiters, and merchants of arms and armor even as both the heket and harpies continued their attempts to raid the surrounding countryside.
Prince Ahmtur the Mighty became one of the three Merchant Princes of Vabbi prior to Nightfall of 1075 AE by securing trade routes from raiding inhuman tribes and cleverly planning raids and attacks. He established his headquarters at the Citadel of Dzagon and faced many threats in his time that involved Dzalanan troubles. The prince's forces, assisted by heroes, notably prevented the rogue Warmarshal Varesh Ossa's Kournan forces from supplying several heket with weapons and denied the heket a chance to assault and weaken the Citadel of Dzagon and divide the Vabbian defenders.
By 1175 AE, Palawa Joko and his Awakened and Mordant Crescent army had conquered Elona. Some of the oppressed Elonians defying the lich king's rule hid in the mountains of Dzalana.[5]
The citadel's grounds and the surrounding areas were covered in the Elder Dragon Kralkatorrik's Dragonbrand after his flight to Vabbi in 1328 AE, creating a barrier infested with Branded which prevented further travel between Vabbi and Dzalana.[4]
Janthir Wilds[edit]
Following the fall of Palawa Joko's tyranny and the weakening of Kralkatorrik's Dragonbrand, Elonian regions previously deemed off limits became more accessible again. By 1337 AE, the newly formed Republic of Elona had begun making tentative excursions into Dzalana, and their motivation for advancing deeper increased once the republic joined the Tyrian Alliance whose main goal was to recruit civilizations near and far into one multiracial organization to safeguard the world of Tyria from inner and outer threats. According to the scouts' reports, harpies remained dominant in Dzalana's hostile, mountaineous territory. There had also been records and rumors of temples and settlements, which merited further exploration.[5]
Notes[edit]

- Chief Councilor Imann: My people have recently begun early exploration of Dzalana. The Dragonbrand is weakening, all these years later.
- Chief Councilor Imann: Dangerous place... Rampant with harpies—I don't see them helping us. Perhaps the heket?
- Braham Eirsson: I've only been to the ruins of Fahranur, parts of Kourna. I should visit more of Elona.
- Braham Eirsson: When you call Dzalana dangerous, what do you mean?
- Chief Councilor Imann: You've been to the best tourist attractions, at least. You should visit.
- Chief Councilor Imann: Dzalana is...taxing. Harpies are dominant, which makes it hostile territory. But my people used to hide in the mountains.
- Chief Councilor Imann: We have records and rumors of temples. Settlements. I don't know if anything waits for us there, but it's worth looking.
