The Avatar of the Tree is the spiritual representation of the Pale Tree, used in order to communicate openly with other beings, primarily her children, the sylvari. She is a strong indicator of the Pale Tree's state of mind and health.[1]

Dialogue[edit]
- If sylvari
- Ah, my beautiful child. It does me good to see you so well.
- Mother, what can you tell me about the Elder Dragons?
- I knew you'd soon bring this question to me. I wish I could be of more service. My knowledge of the world does not extend deeply into the past. But I hear things from time to time.
- What are they saying?
- We are all part of Tyria. They are no exception. They are older than time itself. Just as the forest fire uses its destructive force to make way for new growth, so the Elder Dragons raze Tyria.
- But, a forest fire is heartbreaking. Such loss and devastation.
- Birth, growth, and death. That is nature's way. It applies to the smallest worm and to our world itself.
- Is there nothing we can do?
- Remember who you are, and stay close to those you love. They will soon be the only light left in a very dark world.
- I will take your words to heart.
- I could say the same, Mother Tree. Your boughs grow ever higher.
- It is by the love of my children that I flourish. This manifestation I use for visitors cannot express the depth of my roots or the breadth of my branches, both here and in the Dream.
- I come with withering news, I'm afraid.
- I've already heard. Scarlet is dead. I am proud that you're kind enough to come inform me yourself.
- Then you've heard what she did to Lion's Arch.
- Some of it. Were you the one who put her to rest, sapling?
- I was. It had to be done. (if completed In A Cage Made Of Steel and Lunacy)
- You will not hear blame in the rustling of my leaves. You have done Ceara a great service. She was losing the fight to save her own mind. You set her free. Go in peace.
- I will visit again one day.
- I was not the one who dealt the killing blow. (if did not complete In A Cage Made Of Steel and Lunacy)
- Then you leave my company guilt free. Travel with Ventari's teachings in your heart. Thoughts of you will always be mine.
- I will visit again one day.
- I see.
- Mother? How far do your branches reach into the Dream?
- The intertwining is more complex than that. When you were of the dream before awakening, I was the vein through which you flowed into this ring of existence. We are all one, all connected, all of the same source.
- Even the soundless?
- Originally, yes, but they have chosen to pursue a course of meditation that cuts them off from the Dream, the world, each other, and me. Some cannot bear the burden of shared pain.
- What about Nightmare courtiers?
- Once beloved to me, as you are, these poor misguided children have—through free will—taken a dark path. Their disdain for Ventari's words leads them astray and does harm to the Dream.
- Do you remember Ventari?
- I remember of him: wise, half man, half horse. He blessed us when he left his tablet near the site of my planting. He and a human named Ronan dreamt of creating a haven here.
- Why do you cradle his tablet in your branches?
- I took Ventari's tablet to my core as I grew, and I was nourished. My leaves whisper with his wisdom. Take heed and learn well the meaning of Ventari's counsel, for the tablet is all the guidance you need.
- May the sunshine fall lightly upon you, Blessed Source.
- I must go, Blessed source. I'll return when I can.
- I must go, Blessed source. I'll return when I can.
- I must go, Blessed source. I'll return when I can.
- I must go, Blessed source. I'll return when I can.
- I must go, Blessed source. I'll return when I can.
- I must go, Blessed source. I'll return when I can.
- If non-sylvari
- <Character's race>, I welcome you to my grove. You'll find warm hospitality always in the shade of my branches, so long as you foster peace and partnership.
- You have heard of Scarlet's death?
- I'm aware that she is no more. I grieve for one of my children, even as I rejoice that she has been set free from the darkness that was consuming her.
- I want you to know. I was the one who dealt the killing blow. (if completed In A Cage Made Of Steel and Lunacy)
- Then you are a force for good in this world. I am in your debt, as is Ceara. If she had lived, her pain would have grown even more unbearable. I must know your name.
- I am <Character name>. Her pain? What pain?
- Ceara suffered greatly. Did you not know? She was losing the fight to save her own mind.
- I understand. I'll leave you to your grief.
- I see.
- Understood.
- Your branches? What are you talking about?
- I am not as I appear to you. This small body is but a manifestation I use to put visitors at ease. My entire being stretches deep into this world and out into the Dream. I am more than you can imagine.
- I don't understand.
- It is complex. My children, the sylvari, exist in a realm called the Dream prior to awakening here, in this world. We are all one, all connected, all of the same source.
- All of one mind?
- Not necessarily. Free will plays a role. Not all choose to embrace Ventari's teachings. The Soundless use meditation to cut themselves off, and the Nightmare Court twists their beliefs beyond repair.
- Ventari?
- He was the wise centaur who settled this grove and put down the first roots here. His friend Ronan planted my seed here. His tablet of aphorisms provides the foundation for our code of behavior.
- I see. I better go.
- I see. I better go.
- I see. I better go.
- I see. I better go.
- Thank you. I'll try to behave myself.
- After completing The World Summit
- The Pale Tree's avatar appears to be barely breathing. She is unresponsive.
- Leave.
- After completing The Sword Regrown and receiving the "Urgent Request" mail
- (If sylvari)
- Beloved <Character name>, I have felt your quest within my dream.
- Mother, I'm overjoyed to see you recovering.
- There is much I would speak to you of, but I must rest again soon. For now, allow me to give you my blessing.
- Kneel.
- Valiant <Character name>, you have saved our people and taken up the burden of my thorn.
- Continue.
- May you be as a shield to those who still grow, and a sword to cast out the darkness and light this world.
- Continue.
- I bless you as my knight and name you Knight of the Thorn. Carry Caladbolg with honor, and the sword will never fail you.
- Thank you, Mother. I swear to protect our family, for as long as I live. (awards completion of Knight of the Thorn)
