What are they used for?

Relics like these contain great power that a skilled wielder can draw on. Trust me, once you use one in battle, you'll understand why they're so highly valued.

How old are they?

Ah, a tricky question. The unusual materials are as old as Tyria, maybe older. But they've developed their essence from their surroundings only recently.

Older than Tyria?

It's possible. We don't really understand how they came to be, and there's nothing else on Tyria quite like them. They may have not originated here at all.

I guess there's a lot I don't understand yet.

How recently?

Well, they only gained their current strength at the end of the Dragon Cycle. The Elder Dragons were fundamental to Tyria; their destruction likely altered the nature of a great many things.

Which one is the best?

I don't think it's quite as simple as that. They each have very unique properties that suit different approaches and situations. I think you'll just have to decide for yourself which serves you best.

It seems like that's often the solution.

Where does their power come from?

When exposed to beings of great power, these stones seem to imprint with them, capturing a reflection of that being. That power remains contained within until someone capable of using it comes along.
