Gearing a character for Raids and Fractals requires a twofold understanding: you must know what stat(s) you needs, and you must understand the game's "diagonal" gear progression. Some stats are harder to get than others.
By the end of this guide, you will have a plan for gearing one or more characters in fully Ascended and/or Exotic gear, regardless of which stat you have selected.
The following are requirements:
- You know which stat you need. The primary stats are Berserker's, Viper's, Harrier's, and Minstrel.
- You own both Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire.
- You own Living World Season 3.
- You have Recursive Resourcing, a Central Tyria mastery.
The following is assumed in order to lower the bar of entry:
- Any required runes or sigils you'll get on your own.
- You have no interest in PvP or WvW.
- You have no interest in specialization collections, or gear from achievements otherwise.
- You don't intend on relying on random drops.
- You don't own any recipes that would make this easier.
- You currently do not raid, and therefore cannot reliably obtain Magnetite Shards.
- For time estimates, where applicable, it is assumed that you only have 1 character.
Step 1: Stats[edit]
Determine which set your stats come from. Stats that are italicized are not part of a meta build, but either were previously, or are otherwise part of a non-standard build.

Step 2: Rings[edit]
Set A1 Rings[edit]
Time (each): 3-5 hours over 4-7 days
Requires: Party of 5
Any ring in Set A1 can be acquired from Fractals of the Mists, a rotating dungeon with high daily rewards and player-selected difficulty. With 17 Agony Resistance (AR), you will be able to complete a difficulty scale of 25 and less. Assuming you complete all 3 Daily Fractals and the Initiate difficulty daily recommended Fractal, you will earn 4 Pristine Fractal Relics a day - enough to earn both rings in 5 days. Even with no AR, you will be able to comfortably complete a difficulty scale of 20 or less, and should expect to earn 3 Pristine Fractal Relics a day - enough to earn both rings in 7 days.
Returning players with preexisting AR will be able to complete higher-difficulty scales (and might have these rings already). Because these items are Unique, you are effectively unable to wear two of the same ring at the same time; have one of each.
Item | Type | Rarity | Facts | Cost |
---|---|---|---|---|
Crystalline Band | Ring | Ascended | 10 | |
Ring of Red Death | Ring | Ascended | 10 |
While you should strive to obtain Ascended trinkets, the Exotic acquisition for a Berserker's ring is as follows.
All variants have the upgrade slot populated with the gemstone or jewel used to craft it. If a recipe sheet is not stated for a given recipe, then the source is the discovery panel of the crafting interface.

Step 4: Backpiece[edit]
Set A1 Backpieces[edit]
Time (each): N/A
Requires: Money
Suggestion: Build a different backpiece
This item (Bough of Melandru) has only one advantage: the uninfused version actually has 2 infusion slots. In most other respects, it is a poor choice of item; it is relatively expensive, can't select A2 stats, and honestly doesn't even look that great.
The crafting level requirement is not a disadvantage; you should expect to craft most of your first set of Ascended gear.

Time (each): God knows
Requires: Patience!
Suggestion: Blood Ruby Backpack, "Relic" backpieces

For backpieces specifically, due to the need to infuse, Blood Ruby Farming is reasonable.

Step X: Material Farming[edit]
Blood Ruby[edit]
You can gather roughly 20-30 per day per account (normally) on the standard farming circuit. You will almost certainly need multiple characters. Use GW2Navi's built-in map.
- 3 Blood Rubys per completed meta event per character per day
- Defeat the spirit of Justiciar Hablion (80) can be semi-reliably completed each day during peak hours. [Group Event]
Difluorite Crystal[edit]
- 3 Difluorite Crystals per completed meta event per character per day
- 2 Difluorite Crystals additionally, per completed meta event via event participation chests
- The Specimen Chamber is time-consuming, but profitable.
- 3 Difluorite Crystals per character per day
- Defeat Dominus Crystallum! (80) will take about 5 minutes. [Group Event]
- 8 Difluorite Crystals per character per day
- Defend livestock from the beetle stampede (80) → [Group Event] Defeat Abiri, the Beetle Queen (80). The pre-event could take well over 8 minutes, but the boss should take no more than 2. The pre-event generally finishes the nearby Renown Heart. [Group Event]
- 5 Difluorite Crystals per character per day
- Defeat the rampaging elementals! (80) → [Group Event] Destroy the stormcaller echoes (80) → [Group Event] Help Elder Rhona track down the source of the storm (80) → [Group Event] Defeat Zohaqan (80) is an incredibly long event chain. The third step is highly profitable, and the final step rewards the crystals.
- 3 Difluorite Crystals per character per day
- Destroy the Mark III Suppressor Golem (80) appears somewhere in the southern area of the map - at random. It is soloable, however. [Group Event]
- 5 Difluorite Crystals per character per day
- Disrupt the Magnetics Lab is unusually fast, destroying the nearby turrets with the pulses.
Fire Orchid Blossom[edit]
Fire Orchid Blossoms can be obtained from the relatively-lucrative [Group Event] Defeat the destroyer lieutenant (80) chest, once per character per day. If you plant two characters - one at each destroyer lieutenant - you can loot both chests in the same rotation. This requires some guesswork and/or re-logging shenanigans; the intent is to loot the destroyer that dies first with one character, then loot the destroyer that dies second on the other. This would result in 10 blossoms per (unpredictable) rotation.
- Searing Ascent has a chest that is once per character per day, and rewards 3 Fire Orchid Blossoms in addition to a guaranteed Rare. Planting extra characters at this chest is recommended.
- Kill the greater spirit of nature (80) is also once per character per day, and rewards 3 Fire Orchid Blossoms. While the chest is not as lucrative, the event will generally complete the nearby Renown Heart, granting a total of 6 blossoms. [Group Event]
Fresh Winterberry[edit]
You can gather roughly 50-70 per day per character (normally) on the standard farming circuit. Use GW2Navi's built-in map.
Petrified Wood[edit]
- 2 Petrified Wood per day
- "Daily Destroyer Boss or Wurm Boss", "Daily Sloth or Drake", and "Daily Ember Bay Magic Gatherer" will be automatically done.
- 3 Petrified Wood per event completion
- Defend Skrilla while she searches for treasure (80) has no limitations whatsoever, and gives 3 Petrified Wood. You can probably assume that each character will get credit for Skrilla at least 0.5 times in its rotation.
- 6 Petrified Wood per character per day
- The two-step chain: Help the trapped skritt by breaking defiance on the roots holding them (80) → [Group Event] Defeat the Molten Dominator (80) is less than 10 minutes, and will generally complete the nearby Renown Heart. The event and karma vendor combined each give 3 Petrified Wood.
- 6 Petrified Wood per character per day
- The two-step chain: Power up Ahadd's golem by defeating amplified Destroyers and delivering their cores (80) → [Group Event] Protect the energy relays to help Smoosh-a-Tron defeat Vermignus (80) is less than 15 minutes in a competent map instance, and will generally complete the nearby Renown Heart. The event and karma vendor combined each give 3 Petrified Wood. [Group Event]
- 6 Petrified Wood per character per day
- The three-step chain: Feed the sloth plant with full buckets of fresh water and rolling devil fertilizer (80) → Escort the sloth feeder to the feeding area (80) → [Group Event] Protect the slublings from the sloth queen (80) will likely be between 15 and 25 minutes. However, if the escort event is upscaled, you will encounter enough Champions that the event will still be worthwhile. The feeding event will complete the nearby Renown Heart, and killing the sloth queen will give 3 Petrified Wood
(under construction)
