It should be noticed that some combos will deal conditions and/or grant boons. Just saying. Glastium talk 20:31, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Yes that is true, but generally it is required to use at least 2 people for such things. Good thing to note though. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 20:33, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
Combos can be easily done by anyone alone simply by putting down a field and a finisher, like Set Ablaze + Cross Fire. But my point is, it should be recorded that certain type of field + certain type of finisher may deal certain type of conditions/boons, like Fire Field + Projectile = Burning. Pet categories

Posting here cuz I don't know where would be a better place... I disagree with how you just restructured the animal companion categories in relation to the bestiary category because:

  1. It is highly possible, if not probable, that not all devourers, canines, drakes, etc. will be tameable - in fact, only the hatchling versions are tameable, technically speaking.
  2. "Animal companion" is not a gw1:family (linked to gww because while terminology is the same in GW2 - I believe - we do not have a page for such here, as we tried to combine mechanics and lore into bestiary), which is also the case for GW1 (and is incorrectly documented on the GWW - reason it hasn't been fixed is cuz it's just too confusing and unknown for how it actually is). As such, even simply putting [[:Category:Animal companions]] into Category:Bestiary is outright wrong and misleading.
  3. It, excuse my french, fucks up the bestiary category's appearance, due to how we out of nowhere lack species but have something completely different (animal companion). We do not have turret in that category, for instance (tbh, minions being there is questionable - are they, family wise, different from other undead like in GW1?).

As such, unless you have a reason for those changes, please revert. Konig/talk 05:19, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

No reason other than being bold, which in itself would not be a good reason. Do you think it'd be more appropriate to create categories for animal companions such as Category:Devourer (animal companion) would ease the line? Each devourer can be added to both the devourer cat and the devourer (animal companion) cat. the devourer (animal companion) cat could be nested inside the ranger cat somewhere to separate it from the bestiary, while the devourer cat should be nested inside the bestiary as it should. I need to get off to work at the moment, but I shall think of this further. Cheers. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 11:32, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
I think additional categories would be going overboard. I say let's wait and see how the names of pets go - I see 3 possibilities atm:
  1. Pet names remain as Juvenile - if this is so, then the individual juvenile page should be put into Terrestial/Amphibious/Aquatic animal companion categories (there are only 45 pets in total, no real need to divide them further than those three, after all).
  2. Pet names change akin to GW1 - in this case, creating juvenile and so forth is pointless and the root page should be put into the animal companion categories (same reason as above).
  3. Either of the above, but all forms of the creature type/family are pets (e.g., there will only ever be 3 kinds of devourers) - in this case, the family categories can go into the pet categories or the above situation. I find this to be unlikely (for instance, I doubt they included giant devourers in GW1 and won't have them at least once in GW2, and we can't have giant devourer as pets, sadly).
Making things like Category:Devourer (animal companion) (or even Devouter (pet)) would just create more categories than necessary, and we have a wiki project to do the opposite. I vote against the third possibility as a course of action until we have GW2 mostly documented post release (and then only if it's correct). Konig/talk 19:45, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
While I agree that the charmable pets are juveniles, I haven't seen any such creatures named as such. But I am in no rush, so we can wait to see if they follow such a naming convention in game. Shall I change the families so that they are all into bestiary then? Devourers, felines, canines, etc. While this creates less categories in the tree, it means we need to add more categories to pages, which is exactly what we were not hoping to do here. For instance, currently the Stalker is only in the category of Felines. This is because Felines --> Amphibious animal companions --> Animal companions. Animal companions is then in Bestiary. Whereas, if we place Felines directly into Beastiary, we then need to add another category to the Stalker page (either Amphibious animal companions or Animal companions, whichever method is chosen). TL;DR: Because we are choosing to lessen the classification of the creature (less categories), we are choosing to increase the number of cats on a page. We all remember that discussion. How many times was Aidan linked? Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 20:41, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
I once proposed a complete split between the lore-based bestiary and the game mechanics, in terms of categories. Maybe it's time to revisit that proposal to keep both options viable? - Infinite - talk 21:33, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
I think the system is juvenile=charmable young, hatchling(for some - dunno what mammal pet young are called)=non-charmable young.
Regarding categories per page vs. categories in whole, there is likely a good middle-ground rather than the two extremes you mentioned. For instance, Felines->Bestiary and Amphibious animal companions. Of course this would assume that all felines are animal companions and if not then both the compromise and one extreme (felines->amphibious animal comanions) is plain simply incorrect - and above all, we do not want incorrect categorizations.
@Infinite: I do not think that's necessary, actually. If we were to use Slayer as a basis for what a family in GW2 is, then unlike in GW1 (or at least Prophecies) family and species are the same. Elsewhere in mechanics, they tend to stick to lore and explain certain mechanics with lore even when they don't need to (waypoints, for instance). Where in GW1, not all members of the charr species were of the charr family, however, in GW2 it appears that they will be. Konig/talk 22:09, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Question

Hey,

You gave me some information in the help section about creating new pages and the NPC box. I do have another question though and I hope you are able to help. The page I created is Morgaah Bloodseeker, in my dialogue I use the old GW tick icon and decline icon.

Now my question: Is it better to use the old images or no images at all ? Furthermore I have no idea what the rules about these matters are, I do hope as an expierenced Wiki user that you'll be able to enlighten me.

Kind Regards, --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Bullshizle (talk).

The article looks nice, well done. In regards to rules, there aren't really any per say. On this wiki we use somehting called practices and processes. They're more guideleins and outlines on how one should do things and act on the wiki. In regards to images, generally it's better to add an image than not. If you do not add an image, the you just get the image default size with a red link, as with Andrianna. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 13:52, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

I managed to capture over 6000 item icons and names how, and where do i upload the icons when i cut them out of screen shots? How do i name them? and how do i create a location for ppl to find them for item page creation? ie. a table of item names and icons?? Hundreds more questions but these will do for now.. and is this the right place to ask these questions? ;)GriN Rudhraighe 16:54, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Wow, 6000. That's quite a bit. Well just to let you know, there is someone who apparently is preparing HD icons for the skills and items (i beleive). But they are currently 128x128, so they are in the process of being reduced prior to uploading. That being said, your contributions would be welcomed, if only for placeholders. Before uploading any images, I'd like to draw your attention to Image Formatting. Pretty much all you need to know about naming convention and image tags should be located in there. Due to there being various skills that can share the same name (like Smash, Smash (Spectral Hammer), Smash (empty bottle), etc), sometimes it would be wise to look up the skill's name prior to uploading. Skill icons should match the name of the skill. Keep in mind that most images should be .jpg's; however, some do require a .png filetype. All of that is in the formatting guide though. Happy uploading. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 17:06, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
most are 54x54 but they were made on max graphics settings see Measuring Spoon.png i can make them in either .png or jpg which ever is preferred most are from the Commerce panel's but some are from inventory i had planned on focusing on the commerce and ingredient/crafting icons but am i to assume i create a page immeadately after uploading the icon and place the tags on the page? Rudhraighe 17:33, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
The preference between jpg and png are outlined in the formatting article. It's to keep things standard. Plus most of the templates are already premade with the filetype in mind. The image looks great to me, but generally I'd rather have an image than not have one. Most of the pages are already created, so after you upload the icon, it should auto-fill its space on the page. But if you upload an icon without a page, then I'd recommend creating the page right after. That way you can ensure that all icons have pages. I see that Infinite has already advised you that the images shouldn't have prefixes. So that image that you linked would actually only need to be named Measuring Spoon.png. Happy uploading. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 18:03, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
Also, inventory icons do not need to be tagged as screenshots. See formatting for icons. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 18:05, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

New skill effects template

I've noticed that you'd started applying new template to skill descriptions. I think it would look much better if u don't use line breaks between the templates, as it won't create additional whitespace between lines. What do you think? Alfa-R User Alfa-R sig.png 18:55, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, the spaces are slightly irksome for me as well. While we're at it, I agree that normal notation should dictate how we document things (ie lowercase, no space between number and unit); however, I believe a discussion should be had on the formatting page about in-game vs normal english. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 18:57, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
I wish I knew why it did that - the /effects template shouldn't be returning any linebreaks. But if you place them on separate lines, MW wraps each one in an individual dl tag. However, if I then subst: them like that, MW only uses 1 dl tag for all of them. It's quite frustrating, but I guess leaving out linebreaks between effects isn't a big problem. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 19:02, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
@Venom yes, but I would rather use conventional notation until it is settled down. Also, I think they'll add space sooner or later, as it was said that they are using the Chicago Manual of Style for formatting, and it explicitly states that space should be present, except for degrees and angle measures (like 12°C or 12°45'59"). Alfa-R User Alfa-R sig.png 19:04, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
updated the space since technically we're all in agreement. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 19:10, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
Great! Also, you and Dr Ishmael are using new template differently (he doesn't add line breaks as I've suggested above), which makes skill pages look differently, so you should find an agreement, I think. Alfa-R User Alfa-R sig.png 19:13, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
I think we should go with what looks good for now. If we have to, we can always run a bot later to re-insert linebreaks between the calls to /effects. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 19:18, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Combos and infobox

Just for future references, where was it decided to remove that? (I'm guessing it was removed due to redundancy to the effects) --JonTheMon 02:51, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Pretty much. It wasn't really discussed, more of mentioned here. But logically it would need to go somewhere, and since it's in the tooltip with the other effects, it feels better with the effects. Thus it was indeed redundant to have it in effects and in the infobox. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 02:57, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Why not have related skills?

I see you removed some of mine? Why was that? Were they not close enough? Spatial Surge and the long show bow are pretty similar. Both are long range attacks that deal more damage the further the target is away. Previously Unsigned 21:41, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

The question is more what type of purpose do they serve? Unlike GW1, one can only choose skills from their profession. Thus to show that some professions share a skill or two that can be used in the same fashion or for the same purpose doesn't truly seem useful on a page. In contrast, skills that are similar within the same profession do serve a purpose due to the fact that a user can choose between them. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 21:50, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
This is exact reason why I wanted to include it. What if you switch to another profesion and wonder if there is something similar to what you were previously using? Alternates, regardless of profession. Previously Unsigned 22:27, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
It'd only make sense if you restrict it to the same profession with a different weapon. - Infinite - talk 22:29, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
If you switch to another profession then you shouldn't really be playing "the old profession", you should actually be playing the new profession you have created. For instance, I feel that something like Mist Form is perfectly correct in stating that there exists a similar skill Obsidian Flesh. Both skills are used by the elementalist, but belong in different skill bar placements. This leaves the user 2 opportunities to use a similar skill without the need to create a new character altogether.Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 23:04, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
I wasn't really aiming for any of this (well you can't change, so... or "it's not the same profession"). I wasn't about "realisticness", I was just including it as a wiki thing, like to be inclusive. Oh well, guess it's gone since only I want it. Previously Unsigned 23:31, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
You can always compile a list of related skills in your sandbox or related user page for your own purposes if you feel you'd benefit from it. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 23:39, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

G19

I hear that GW2 works with this keyboard. Has anyone actually used the screen for anything? I've seen some pictures of the screen that someone took with their camera, but I'm wondering if anyone has some first-hand experience. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 17:37, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

I have the G13 (not the 19), but I think the widget works the same. ANet hasn't (yet?) supported all special features and I'm not sure if there's any customization (it would be via GW2.exe, not G13/G19 software probably...unless you have a custom LUA exe). One of the windows shows map completion (done vs remaining for skill points, WPs, POIs, ...). Another has your toon's overall stats. One window is meant to show WvW stats, but it wasn't enabled from ANet's side (or the API had changed since the tool was written). There was one more window that I never used, so I don't remember what it showed.
As far as I could tell, the "joystick" mode for the G13 isn't enabled for GW2 (not yet anyhow). For some games, that allows analog control (you move slower if you don't push the stick all the way), but in GW2, it was better for me to program it to keyboard shortcuts.
One thing that's very useful is to create a "right-mouse down" macro, which works to toggle-on the rotation of your POV using the mouse, i.e. without having to hold down right-click (the script is "right-mouse up" → "right-mouse down", the extra step in order to ensure the macro works if you use the regular mouse to toggle off screen rotation). – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:56, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

You're quite right doctor. Sicne the removal of the recipe, none can be made anymore. But I did assume that the individuals still having the items wouldn't need it on the wiki. As a point in generality, I'd prefer to have active items (such as the mystic forge) being the only point of reference, for ease. And to mr/mrs IP, that wording is actually better. It's short and to the point. I think I shall use it. I was just brainless editing, so C&P seemed the easiest. I'll make the adjustments when I have the time.
