"Turai is too hard."[edit]

Yes. Yes he is.

And I still beat him anyway.

If you happen to play Warrior, and you're struggling to win against the King of Elona himself, I have a solution for you.

What you will need[edit]

  • A level 80 Warrior.
  • A set of level 80 gears in at least Exotic rarity (You can try going in naked, but we're not pushing ourselves here, so let's be safe about it).
  • A way of mitigating damage. You can use Defiant Stance.png Defiant Stance for healing skill, Endure Pain.png Endure Pain for a few seconds of invulnerability, or a Shield to block incoming damage.
  • A way of recovering from stuns, called Breaks stun.png Stunbreak, or a skill that grants Stability.png Stability as Turai at one point will try to knock you down.
  • A way of dealing crowd control effects. You will need it to do the mechanic, which I will explain below.
    • This can be done either by using weapons with those (I prefer Mace/Shield), or equipping yourself with utility skills that can deal damage to the defiance bar.
  • A build that focuses on Strength, Defense and a third trait line of your choice (in this case, Spellbreaker).
    • To elaborate more on that: both Strength and Defense directly increases your damage output, as well as giving sustain via Distracting Strikes.png Might Makes Right and Adrenal Health.png Adrenal Health, allowing you to heal and dodge more often. Defense also has a trait called Merciless Hammer.png Merciless Hammer, which not only compliments any CC-heavy weapons, but also grants you adrenaline by doing so, allowing you to use your Burst skill, and thus more CC.
    • Using these trait lines allows you to pick additional traits, such as Death from Above.png Brave Stride and Stalwart Strength.png Stalwart Strength, both of which grants you Stability.png Stability that will help you against Turai's CC-based attacks.

Okay, so how do you beat him?[edit]

There are two ways of doing it: the "intended way" and the "cheese strat". Both deal with the similar tactics of trying to fight off against Turai's aggression early on, but one makes use of the core fundamentals of Guild Wars 2 combat, while the other one involves trying to run away out of his range to avoid being hit.

The Intended Way[edit]

So you choose to fight honorably. Good, but you need to make sure you can survive his barrage of attacks. Turai starts off with Riposte.png Eternal Blade, Shield of Elona.png Shield of Elona and Revealed.png Veil Sight, which should be an indication that you shouldn't really be hitting him back harder. This is what I would call the "mechanic", as by default, you are not meant to defeat him at this stage, and instead you have to make use of your defense before you find an opening.

To start off, if you are far away from Turai, he will start lunging at you and deal heavy damage. He will then start swarming you with attacks like spin2win and a giga-buffed sword auto attack. Being close to Turai at the start will not make him lunge at you, though I cannot say if this is more effective than letting him get close to you himself. Every now and then, his attack will Stun.png Stun you, which can further leave you vulnerable to his attacks if you do not have Stability.png Stability or a way to recover from it.

This is where your defensive game will come into play. If you choose to use CC-heavy weapons with Stalwart Strength.png Stalwart Strength, you already have less issues to deal with him trying to knock you down (though don't spam it, you will need to save some for later). Timing a dodge is very important, but Distracting Strikes.png Might Makes Right will allow you to spam more dodges, as long as you have the means to provide Might.png Might to yourself. You can also just use your Defiant Stance.png Defiant Stance and Endure Pain.png Endure Pain to give yourself a breathing room.

After around 35 seconds, Turai will leap back to the center of the arena, and charge his throw attack with his shield. Dodge this attack. Failure to do so will "reset" his mechanic and make him more or less invulnerable again, and you will have to start over. If you do manage to dodge his attack however, he will now be wide open. This is where you want to start spamming CC skills, as failure to do so will again, "reset" his mechanic and you're dead.

Should you successfully break his defiance bar, he will lose the buff that makes him invulnerable. This is in theory, a phase where you can kill him right off if you have enough damage. Do note however that he still has a sword, and he can still hit you like a truck, so if you want to play it safe, by all means.

Give him around another 35 seconds, and he will do the exact same thing as before. Dodge this attack. Failure to do so will not be the end of the world, but you will be stunned for a good while. Failing to break his defiance bar, however, will "reset" his mechanic and make him more or less invulnerable again, and you will have to start over. Yes, he will gain back Shield of Elona.png Shield of Elona if you fail to do so. Do not fail this part.

Should you successfully break his defiance bar again, he will lose his sword, and now he hits you like a wet noodle. Note that he can still stun you with his attacks, but at this point, it should be a breeze to fight him. Just be sure to recover your health if it gets too low.

And there you have it. So much for the King of Elona.

The Cheese Strat[edit]

So you choose to run away. That is fine, not everyone is up to fight against the big boy himself, but do note that he will still chase you down even if you choose to do so. You can mitigate this by using Relic of Speed.png Relic of Speed and Signet of Rage.png Signet of Rage to grant you enough movement speed that he cannot catch up to you, but it's not an investment I'm willing to make personally.

Should you be like me and not do that, you would need to make use of your defenses, such as Defiant Stance.png Defiant Stance to make sure you can tank the damage, if he so happens to catch up and hit you with his spin2win move.

Aside from this, there isn't really much of a difference from doing it "the intended way", you still need to dodge his weapon throws and break the defiance bar to proceed to the next phase, and failure to do so means you have to start over. You will eventually end up having to fight him head-on when he loses both the buffs that make this whole thing so painful.

So what do you get from this?[edit]

  • The "Kingslayer" title to brag your friends over.
  • A bunch of festival tokens.
  • Hard-earned knowledge on the fundamentals of combat in Guild Wars 2.
  • The friends you have made along the way.
