Captain Fa

Captain Fa Yang[1] is the head of Xunlai Jade Security. A stern rationalist, he follows orders diligently but is willing to consider logical arguments from his opposition.

Biography[edit]

Early years[edit]

Fa Yang worked as a dockmaster in New Kaineng City's harbour for twenty years before joining the Xunlai Jade corportation in 1837 CC (1327 AE). Yu Joon noted that Fa's loyalty to her corporation was unequaled among stuff, and he had even volunteered to head the Xunlai summer picnic committee. Fa appears to share an old bond with Joon, to whom he is known as "uncle Fa," and affectionately addresses her as "Joon-ee", though she discourages use of such familial terms during work.[1]

Working diligently for Xunlai Jade as the Head of Security, Captain Fa often butted heads with Detective Rama who both viewed Fa as a corporate stooge and wanted to knock his teeth in after their many disagreements. Despite his position as a company man, Fa earned a reputation of being a pragmatic rationalist. He respected figures of authority, showing courtesy to people in Empress Ihn's court such as the advisor Navan.[2]

End of Dragons[edit]

Act 2[edit]

When the enraged Elder Dragon Soo-Won broke free from Xunlai Jade's damaged Yong Reactor under unclear circumstances in 1845 CC (1335 AE), Fa used radio to introduce himself through speakers and ordered anyone who was still inside to surrender or face the consequences once Fa and his unit entered the facility. However, when he got inside, he found no one to arrest.[3]

Act 3[edit]

Following the reactor's destruction, the upset Joon ordered Fa to find and arrest the Pact Commander for questioning as the Commander had been the last person seen entering the facility before the fallout. Fa eventually located the Commander in the presence of both Navan and Rama at the Nika's Blade restaurant and informed them of Joon's demands. Navan tried to argue in the Commander's defense, pointing out that they had just been discussing a civil resolution to the crisis. While being respectful of Navan, Fa reminded her that he had to carry out Joon's orders and argued with Rama about whether he had legal right to arrest the Commander despite not being a member of the Ministry of Security. He also denied the Commander's accusation of Xunlai Jade holding an Elder Dragon in the research facility.

Navan pleaded Fa to hear the Commander out before deciding on a course of action. Fa relented and, depending on the Commander's persuasiveness, was either swayed to let the Commander find the real culprit Ankka thanks to logical arguments offered during the debate, or tried to bring the Commander back with force. Either way, the Commander managed to evade capture, and Fa returned to Joon empty-handed. He sent Joon a report on his failure and told her that he had turned his attention to the efforts to contain the rampaging Soo-Won in the Jade Sea. Fa also asked Joon to be careful as he worried that the outsiders might be playing them just like Joon's former employee Mai Trin had turned out to be untrustworthy.[4]

Act 5[edit]

After the Commander had successfully cleared their name by presenting Joon with evidence of Ankka's involvement in the destruction of the facility and Soo-Won's release, Joon told Fa to keep assisting the Commander's Dragon's Watch guild in any way he could and help contain the maddened Elder Dragon and the Void horde following in Soo-Won's trail. Upon arriving on the scene, Fa met with Navan and the Commander's sylvari ally Caithe and learned much to his horror that they had recruited the notorious gangs known as the Jade Brotherhood and the Speakers to bolster their forces against the encroaching Void. Fa objected to the sudden alliance, reminding the two women that the gangs were self-serving and violent and could not be trusted. However, he was eventually convinced to lend his aid as one of the generals of the allied forces once he found out that they would also have the benevolent Elder Dragon Aurene fighting by their side to save Cantha and the world from destruction.

The Canthan armies and their unlikely allies fought against the Void horde across Dragon's End, ultimately reaching the Harvest Temple where they confronted the Void-influenced Soo-Won. After a fierce clash, they were able to weaken the Water Dragon enough for the Commander's party to attempt to drain the Void from Soo-Won and purify her. However, once the corrupted magic was out, it coalesced to form its own being—the Dragonvoid—and attacked the allied forces. The apocalypse was averted when Joon and the asura Taimi's devices weakened the Void, the Commander and Aurene joining forces to defeat the Dragonvoid, and Fa and the armies of the Jade Sea bought them the time they needed by battling the invading the Void horde around the temple. Once the battle was over and Soo-Won's magic had been transferred to Aurene upon her death, Fa and the others attended the victory celebration at Arborstone and raised a toast to Aurene who had become the One Elder Dragon.

Trivia[edit]

  • Captain Fa is voiced by Paul Nakauchi.
  • Designer Matthew Medina wanted more representation for older men in Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons and suggested the aged look and receding hairstyle for Fa which character designers implemented.[5]
  • Medina has suggested that Fa may have once been a police officer in his younger days before going into private security.[5]

Detective Rama: He's not my colleague—he's a gussied-up rent-a-cop. Go back to Xunlai, "Captain" Fa, the real police are on the case. [...]
Detective Rama: What do you know—restraint from a corporate stooge. [...]
<Character name>: How does Fa have jurisdiction?
Detective Rama: It's...complicated. Some corporate personhood nonsense. Pain in my ass. I've butted heads with Captain Fa before. If it comes down to a fight, you're gonna need my backup.
<Character name>: Seriously? Why would you fight FOR me if you were sent to arrest me?
Detective Rama: Because I've got pretty good instincts for this kind of stuff, and my instinct says I shouldn't let him take you without a fight. Plus, I've been waiting to knock Fa's teeth in for a while.
