WvW Guild Selection.

World Restructuring is a system that replaces the previous worlds for World vs World matches, instead matching players based upon a players nominated Guild.

A related but unreleased system is the Alliances system, where Guilds can group together for Match Making purposes.

Background[edit]

World Restructuring was a planned system initially announced in 2018[1], and its aim was to deliver a World vs World experience that has more even population and coverage between opposing teams.

It was first released for beta testing in late 2021[2].

With this new feature all players were removed from their existing worlds. The system then creates new worlds (or WvW teams) by matching people in the same Region (NA or EU) with similar predicted participation, whilst keeping players with the same nominated Guild together.

Beta events[edit]

Several Beta events for World Restructuring occurred, which at various points included testing the following functionality:

  • The UI for choosing or changing your WvW Guild
  • Correctly matching players together based on nominated Guild
  • Correctly handling players with no guild selected, or new to WvW
  • Correctly generating teams of comparable player sizes and activity.
  • Checking that matches are close, by watching Victory Point disparity

Matchmaking[edit]

The primary goal of matchmaking is to ensure that each team has a balanced active population in World vs World, with similar coverage to their opponent teams. Unlike the existing world system where some Worlds have a designated Language, language is not known to be a factor.

Players can be in several states for the Matchmaking System to consider:

  1. Player is not active in WvW and does not have a World vs World Guild selected.
  2. Player is active in WvW but does have a World vs World Guild selected.

Future additional considerations upon the release of the planned Alliance system:

  1. Selected World vs World Guild is not part of an Alliance.
  2. Selected World vs World Guild is part of an Alliance

A player who has no World vs World Guild selected and is new to World vs World will be asked which world they want to be assigned to when they go to play World vs World for the first time in a match. Each world has a limited capacity to accept these players, to prevent population imbalance.[2]

A player who is active in WvW but has no WvW Guild selected, will be automatically matched onto a team.

A player who has selected a WvW Guild will be matched onto the same team as the other Guild Members who have selected that Guild as their WvW guild.

A player who has selected a WvW Guild that is part of an Alliance, will be matched onto the same team as all of the other Guild Members who have selected a Guild in that Alliance as their WvW Guild.

The duration of each match is 4 weeks. Once teams are assigned, players are not able to transfer between teams until next match.[10]

Selecting a WvW Guild[edit]

Players set their WvW Guild in the Guild Panel, by pressing the "Set as WvW Guild" button when they have the correct Guild selected.

Alliances[edit]

Primary article: Alliances

The introduction of World Restructuring was a pre-requisite to the future planned release of the Alliances system

Alliances are a future development of this system (considered to be Phase 2), where a WvW guild will also be able to invite other WvW guilds to an Alliance in order to have the guilds play together on the same team. Each Alliance will have certain restrictions though, such as a finite number of guilds or players.

Trivia[edit]

A previous Beta UI for selecting your WvW Guild.
  • Regarding the development of Alliances, the Game Director Joshua Davis said on June 5, 2022 this:

To clarify, World Restructuring hasn't been actively developed since its original announcement in 2018. Previous studio leadership deprioritized the project shortly after it was announced. We put a team back on it last year. The idea has existed for 4+ years, but meaningful progress has mostly happened over the last year.

Comment by Joshua Davis, Reddit.com

  • During the betas where team names were used, they were as follows (and identical for both EU and NA, except as noted):
    • Dragon's Claw
    • First Haven
    • Fortune's Vale (EU only)
    • Giant's Rise
    • Grenth's Door (EU only)
    • Griffonfall
    • Moogooloo
    • Phoenix Dawn
    • Reaper's Corridor
    • Seven Pines
    • Silent Woods (EU only)
    • Skrittsburgh
    • Stonefall
    • Thornwatch
    • Titan's Staircase
  • An additional tier was present during the first team period (team creation for which having taken place June 14, 2024) in order to alleviate prime time queue times[11], the removal of this tier with the next team creation (on July 26, 2024[12]) resulted in the following 6 teams being removed (with the region they were removed from in braces):
    • De Molish Post (NA)
    • Grekvelnn Burrows (EU)
    • Gyala Hatchery (EU)
    • Lagula's Kraal (NA)
    • Mithric Cliffs (NA)
    • Temple of Febe (EU)
