Spiffy?
Hey TEF! good to finally see you on the gw2w :) You need to get a new spiffy user page too! --Moto Saxon 19:06, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah... once I figure out my way around here. Thanks for the welcome :-) – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:35, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- It's quite easy to get used to GW2W. All you need to do is stay casual with the best intention for the wiki. There's no policies, but somehow that doesn't counteract the wiki procedures so it's a lot less strict. :) - Infinite - talk 19:38, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- I'm sure that will change as soon as there's an announced Beta or release date for GW2. Sigh.
- Even so, I prefer to lurk for a while before contributing to a site, to get a sense of the community's culture and personality. Thanks for the second welcome. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:43, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- Greetings TEF! I kinda share your opinion about lurking to get to know the community. --El_Nazgir 19:57, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- welcome. --The Holy Dragons 20:01, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
I see you...
In RC :D. --Lania 15:11, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
- Hey! Nice to see you, too. (And lol, besides.) – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 15:13, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
Sometimes there is order where one sees chaos
per [1] - there in fact was an order. But apparently the order you made, and the order I made, appeared as a lack of order to the other. Funny, isn't it. Konig/talk
- Yes, that's a general issue with a lot of community decisions: arguments supporting multiple points-of-view are based on internal assumptions. Since those assumptions aren't brought up, it makes it difficult to realize there's agreement about principles that can lead to a good resolution.
- Anyhow, I've now suggested that the wiki formally adopt alpha-order as the default, so that we discuss alternatives before implementing them. It might be that for e.g. Personality, people would prefer to see charm-heavy → dignity-heavy → ferocity-heavy (although, I find that confusing, especially with how little we know about the frequency and degree of personality on the player's experience). – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 01:19, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Just to spam you
One d, two g's. One d, two g's. But I forgive you because so many have made the same mistake. :p
I noticed you had some similiar impressions of BWE #1 as I, except that I don't think people will learn to truly band together in just two days. Adapting away from games of old takes some time from community. ;) Oh, and in case you didn't know, Skyrim has far worse inventory/menu UI system for a game of that scope than GW2 (though it can be fixed with mods, namely SkyUI). Mediggo 08:19, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- My apologies about the name spelling.
- Re: BWE/1. I agree that it will take people a while (perhaps months even) to learn that GW2 allows for entirely new ways of thinking (another e.g. my guild is still thinking of GW1 guilds as it tries to organize during the beta). I suspect that it will take WvW experiences before we see big behavior shifts in GW2 PvE behavior.
- Re: Inventory systems. I haven't played Skryim (and perhaps won't — I love the series, but I don't like being forced to join Steam for a single-player game). Still, based on previous TES games, I can imagine that the inventory management system is horrible. The thing that saves the series from getting trashed for stuff like that is the fantastic open modding system. I never used any of the mods that adjusted game play (unless it nerfed an OP'd player feature), but I did take advantage (and customize) all sorts of UI mods for Morrowind/Oblivion; they eliminated all sorts of terrible tedium and improved the HUD to be truly useful and usable.
- Re: GW2 inventory systems. Apparently, there are a lot of GW2 inventory management features that weren't available during the beta. The only obvious ugliness I see is that you have to keep going back/forth between bank and vendors/crafting stations; that seems like a completely unnecessary headache while in town. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:05, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- I love the TES series as well but I'm having the same reservations about Skyrim... why do I have to use steam? From what I kinda gathered from the beta forum before they wiped it is that the developers are working on a TON of stuff. So, hopefully by the time official release comes along it'll be amazing. I have a lot of "reservations" about the game so far as apparent by my massive WoT on my userpage but it sounds like a lot of that and then more will be addressed except for the animations and most of my issues with the combat. I think for the combat, I think I got spoiled by the fluid, brutally difficult, god of war-like combat in vindictus. I think GW2 might be a good compromise between pure point and click vs pure action combat... and I just need to get used to it. --Lania 19:48, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- I have my own issues with Skyrim, but Steam is not one of them. I was also irritated by the prospect of having to sign up "just" to play this one game, but honestly I have barely noticed Steam at all. Once in a while it will bother me with whining about how it can't connect to the servers (because I have no internet connection), but otherwise... besides, connection to Steam gets you access to game patches and a commnuity of modders (Steam Workshop) plus the officially endorsed modding tool (CreationKit). I never get any annoying spam emails or anything, either. So overall I'd have to say it's a nonissue at worst and a positive thing at best. Also remember that you never actually need to have the game discs as long as you have a Steam account...you can just re-download the game to any computer whenever. (Save files, unfortunately, are stored on each machine individually.)
- But yeah, definitely give Skyrim a try if you're interested - don't let Steam deter you. I think you'll find, like I and many others did, that even though the game (out of the box) is not very conducive to long-term playing, the actual fun value it gives is worth the money. Basically, Skyrim is 10/10 for content and like 3/10 for presentation/execution, so it all depends how long you can put up with awful UI and stuff, unless you mod of course. - I personally always mod bethesda games. On oblivion and fallout 3, my Mod files were 4 times bigger than the game file itself. Maybe i'll give skyrim a shot if steam behaves. --Lania 21:09, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- My concern is more philosophical than practical: when I buy a bicycle, I'm not forced to buy insurance from a specific company. If I'm buying a game that doesn't require internet access to play, I shouldn't be required to do business with a specific fourth party to obtain updates or mods. I'm sure this is just one more erosion of the freedom-to-choose that I'll have to get used to.
- I also have a secondary concern that, in effect, this requires me to sell my personal play habits to Steam (e.g. what I choose to download, how frequently I'm online, certain types of in-game achievements).
- Mind you, so far, Steam seems like the Google of software distributors: their client is as innocuous as possible, they offer plenty of good/great discounts in exchange for your business, they don't nickel and dime you (e.g. no access fee, no spam, no transactional charges, no hidden costs), and (from all reports) seem like a pretty decent company to work at. But that can change: even Google is becoming more like Microsoft every day. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 23:16, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
- In general, once you download a game through Steam, you can play the game directly without the Steam client running. I know I can do that with Portal 2 and STO, at least, but neither of them are Steam-exclusive, either. —Dr Ishmael 00:43, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
- All this talk about steam and skyrim.... I downloaded and installed steam, and saw that skyrim is on a 33% discount. I couldn't control myself I had to buy it :P 20$ cheaper than anywhere else is too good to pass up. Now just have to wait for it to download 5.5 GB of game files @_@... and OMG 1800+ mods wheee! --Lania 05:02, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
(Reset indent) Google: Skyrim Nexus. Download: Nexon Mod Manager and SkyUI. Forget about Steam Workshop. Mediggo 10:47, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the idea. (Of course, since you posted, the site is now attempting 500 connections/second and is overloaded. I will check it out. Perhaps Skyrim will be just the RPG-fix I need to tide me over between BWEs.) – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:15, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
GW2 Wiki Editors
Ummm... IDK WTF is going on with the editors over here. But some of this uppity attitude is getting on my nerves. I've never seen this kind of anal retentiveness on the GW1 wikis. One guy gives me grief to replying to a year old post. Now YOU have nothing better to do than MOVE my question (that was in the right section) BECAUSE I added it to the bottom of a year old thread? That had NEVER been an issue with the GW1 wikis. You didn't even have the decency to give me a heads up on my talk page, so that I didn't make the same perceived "mistake" again. You didn't ANSWER the questions, but you did just have to lay your grubby paws on it? OCD much? IF it's worth your lordly bother, can you link me to a page telling me what the general consensus for the expiry date of threads are? Does that exist?
- I'm putting it back... revert it if it gives you a nice epeen. Go ahead and add your blah, blah now... I need more motivation to stop wasting time on this wiki.
- WOW!!!! I JUST NOTICED, on one of YOUR PAGES [[2]], this tidbit... "you can upgrade bags to at least 20 slots..." So nice of you move AND answer my question with that. You're my H~E~R~O~ Frostty1 18:01, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
- I think there's been a severe misunderstanding.
- I moved your post because (a) it appeared to be based on new information and (b) it was lost by being in a thread that had died out last year. I'm not bothered if you think it will get more attention where you posted it originally. And, btw, contributors routinely move new posts to the bottom of talk pages at GWW...depending on the page/context.
- I didn't answer the question b/c I don't know the answer. I'm also curious what the new default is supposed to be. You said 24; I assumed you had more information than I did.
- My user page is based on information that was accurate at the time and it's about "bags," not the original backpack. Bags can be crafted/purchases and each offers from four to twenty slots; that has nothing to do with the default size of inventory for a new character.
- There's no expiration date on a thread. Whether a new post belongs in an outdated thread depends entirely on context, not a rule of law. My observation is that people ignore dead threads (even with new posts) and pay more attention to new posts at the bottom.
- → I moved your question to the bottom so that it would be more likely to be answered, not because you broke a rule.
- In short, it appears that you and I got off on the wrong foot. I'm sorry if I gave you the impression that you had done something wrong. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:33, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
