User:Erasculio/Skill table
Description[edit]
After a discussion in the Community Portal, User:Noxx worked on a new model of skill lists that could display skill facts, together with User:Chieftain Alex. The result has not been implemented in the wiki due to concerns about loading time; and mostly, as I learned later, because the lists are autocategorized among combo effects (oops). In order to keep the functionality of showing the skill facts in a somewhat "out of sight" place, so the issues wouldn't be at the forefront of the wiki, I created skill lists in my user space with Noxx's templates, which right now may be seen here and here. However, I felt very uncomfortable in using someone else's templates in my user space; if Noxx wanted to modify his templates, he could feel bad about breaking the configuration of all my skill tables. In order to avoid that issue, I have made a template within my own user space, so I could make a list of skills showing the skill facts.
That being said, I know next to nothing about coding, and I wanted to use something that required only a single template instead of two (so I wouldn't fill my user space - again - with repeated content from the wiki). In a somewhat clunsy way that at least is (mostly) working, I have copied the template from Template:Skill table row and made a few adjustements. The changes mostly are:
- Skill facts are shown for all skills. This is the main objective of this template.
- Bigger skill icons (size 50). I miss the bigger icons from the original Guild Wars Wiki.
- I have changed the functionality of the "slot" parameter, so it's automatically shown if the skill has a skill slot number. I have also made the template more similar to our current skill lists, in that the chain skills also display the slot number. This has the advantage that I don't need to use the "slot=yes" command, making the creation of the lists much easier. However, the price I have to pay for that is that all my skill lists have a column before the skill icons and names. It's somewhat subtle in most lists, but it's still there.
To the lists themselves:
- I have removed the underwater skills, as well as the information about which skills are useable underwater. The game barely uses underwater combat anymore.
- I have also removed the hero point cost of the skills. This allows me to use the same layout and same code for both weapon skills and slot skills.
- Which means, all skill lists using this template have 6 columns.
Later, User:Chieftain Alex very graciously helped me with some of the parser functions, so the skill table works with revenant skills that have a skill cost. Now the lists work for all professions!
