Is this going to be the new customized to: <player name> mechanic?Yumiko ^,~ 23:49, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

I don't know if I'd call it "new", but sure. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 01:24, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

Merchants that sell kits[edit]

I'm going to put a list of merchants that sell Salvage kits of any variety on the page; It won't be very pretty, but I figure someone else can clean it up later. Rocketgarden 05:10, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

I wonder if we can lump merchants into several broad groups -- that I saw, the same merchants that sold kits also sold harvest equipment, so these might be 'General Merchants', whereas other merchants might serve more specific purposes. If that's the case, then it's simply enumerating the types of merchants and creating a list that either identifies the type, or one list for each type. 97.118.203.172 02:23, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

List of merchants needs a waypoint column[edit]

Assuming we retain the list of merchants, nearest waypoint is a critical piece of data, because that's how people navigate. Points of interest are useful for orientation (and lore), but they don't make it easy for people to get from their current location to the NPC. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:32, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Perfect Salvage Kits[edit]

On this page it says the kit has one use only. During this BWE I got a Perfect Salvage kit from a mystic chest, and I've used it 3 times now. I don't see a number of uses remaining anywhere to be found on the icon or in the description. I don't know if this is a glitch or if they have unlimited uses, but something that might be worth noting. ~Ao Allusir 04:43, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

I reported a bug about this. I believe I used mine about 5 times, each time wondering if it was going to disappear. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:54, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
This item has now been renamed Black Lion Salvage Kit, and contains 25 uses. Simooshy 22:06, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

What items can Salvage Kits be used on?[edit]

Can Salvage kits be used only on weapons and armor, or are there other item types that can be salvaged? -- 75.185.12.231 16:03, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Equipment and some useless loot which serves no other purpose than being salvaged. Gnarf 16:13, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
It seems like you can't salvage gear bought from an npc. It's too bad since that would be an easy way to get materials. 68.32.170.29 02:58, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Rare materials from salvage?[edit]

Was anyone able to salvage rare materials from items? I just salvaged over 200 items (from greens to "salvage item" trash) with basic salvage kit, and didn't get a single rare mat. So either I'm extremely unlucky or something is wrong. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 77.237.22.171 (talk).

Do the "fine" materials, like blood and venom sacs, and such, count as these "rare materials"? Or is it talking about something even more special like destroyer and crystal shards? --Starfleck 13:51, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
I also have not been able to salvage rare materials, even with nicer salvage kits. 70.90.165.42
Level 70 Rare (yellow) or higher items can yield Glob of Ectoplasm. It doesn't look like anything can salvage into Fine Crafting materials, like Totems. By "rare materials", I think it means receiving something better, like Orichalcum instead of Mithril, or Gossamer instead of Silk. Karew 02:23, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
(Not sure how to verify) I think the salvaging is also based upon either your own character level or your crafting level; when I was a lower level I could only salvage jute, copper and green wood logs; as I progressed in both character and crafting level now the same items can be salvaged into the next level of crafting materials (iron, soft wood, and wool); the only thing that has changed since is my own character level and crafting level; same minor salvage kits but now the salvages are all higher grades of crafting materials.... I'm not sure how I could prove this other than point it out... 165.154.50.79 12:51, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Article could use far more information[edit]

At present, there is no explanation about the mechanics of salvaging, only a list of Salvage Kits and their stats. As it is, you already have some info in this discussion that could be incorporated, like what can be salvaged and explain salvaging "rare" materials. It would be good if someone can offer details on what impacts the quality and quantity of what is salvaged (player level? item level? item rarity? kit tier?). --76.120.46.145 16:26, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

I would like to agree on the need for more information regarding the differences when you salvage with one kit over another. Do you only obtain up to a certain level of items with a crude kit? Possibly a research page could be set up to aid in the discovery and verification of this information. Also, a table with the type of kit, where it can be obtained and for how much would be helpful. An explanation of what sort of rare materials can be salvaged would like-wise be cool. I ask because I cannot do all this myself. It would also be cool if the information was available before it becomes pointless. Thankyou, Emesis 124.178.37.167 17:32, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Formula for current Mystic Salvage kit cost[edit]

These kits are more cost effective than buying 10 single kits, while the price for 100 gems is below 94 Silver coin 34 Copper coin.

  1. The following formulas assume buying a pack of 10 stones.
  2. The result will be the cost in silver. Eg: 0.53021 Silver coin = 53 Copper coin per use.
  • Long form cost per use = ((100 gems cost * 4.5 / 10 * 3 [costs for 3 stones, bought at 10 stones price]) + 26.24 [for the 3 salvage kit]) / 250

Update 2021: With the current price for 100 gems cost of 30.15 Gold coin, the formula can still be used to calculate one salvage, but buying the stones makes no sense (one salvage will cost ~16 Silver coin 38 Copper coin) - Bananenbaum 10:28, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

Cost per use of the Disassembler 3BEK Kit[edit]

One DB3 kit has 250 uses and is of equal effectiveness to a Basic Salvage Kit, which has 25 uses and costs 88 Copper coin. Therefore, the "fair price" of a DB3 kit is at least Silver coin 80 Copper coin. It only takes up one inventory space instead of ten, and whether that is worth extra money is subjective, so we'll leave that out.

To get a DB3 kit, 25 Commendations are needed. There are a variety of recipes to get them; one Donation Packaging is always needed, and it costs Silver coin 4 Copper coin, but the price can be lower if one buys on the trading post. TP price of Donation Packaging is basically Silver coin right now, so the savings are negligible; for purposes of this calculation we can ignore it, since it's unlikely anyone will be selling bonus Donation Packaging for substantially cheaper now that the event is over, and it barely makes a price difference.

In the following table, the price per Commendation includes the price of the Donation Packaging. All recipes use x3 of the same kind of thing and one Donation Packaging (as far as anyone knows); for Food, Ingots, and Planks, you can mix and match different tiers/level requirements. Supposedly raw Logs also work, but no one has posted the results yet. Note that one actually tends to lose money by manufacturing Planks and Ingots, since they tend to have the same vendor value, and no Plank or Ingot takes only one base material; therefore I use the vendor value of the lowest base materials.

Efficiency is based on TVM and market prices: TVM is "Time Value of Money", and I use these terms together to refer to the fact that there is no such thing as having "free" reagents available. Food is different because it has no vendor value and rarely sells on the TP for any significant amount, nor does it provide any meaningful benefit when consumed (other than maybe the Magic Find boosting ones). In contrast, Ore, Ingots, Wood, and Planks always sell on the TP, so they are almost always worth more than vendor value, and one could also use those materials to craft things. Things are also not free if you go out and farm them, because the time you spend doing that could be used to earn money instead. That sort of value can't be quantified easily, but for purposes of calculation we can just say that it costs at least vendor value of the materials gathered rather than nothing. Only you can place a value on your time.

Data taken from Talk:Captain's Council Commendation and the trading post as of today. If a recipe isn't listed there, I'm not using it in my calculations - you might get better ratios with other recipes not explicitly listed, so experiment.

Finally, YMMV - the prices on the TP change all the time, so if there is a great bargain on one of these reagents, it might suddenly be the best recipe.

Reagents x3 Commendations Price per Commendation Notes
Stack of any 10 Food 1 Silver coin 34 Copper coin+ Even if you can buy food for Copper coin, which is what I'm using for base, this is the most expensive recipe.
Stack of any ? Log ? ? Not sure until someone finds out if this is actually a valid recipe.
Stack of any 5 Plank 2-5+ 84 Copper coin - Silver coin 27 Copper coin Donation Packaging + vendor value of 15 Hard Wood Logs + 15 Elder Wood Logs + 15 Ancient Wood Logs / 5 Commendations; Donation Packaging + vendor value of 15 Green Wood Logs + 20 Soft Wood Logs + 15 Seasoned Wood Logs / 2 Commendations.
Stack of any 5 Ingot 2-13+ 25 Copper coin - 97 Copper coin Donation Packaging + vendor value of 10 Platinum Ore + 10 Mithril Ore + 10 Orichalcum Ore; Donation Packaging + vendor value of 10 Copper Ore + 10 Silver Ore + 10 Gold Ore / 2 Commendations.
Trinket 15-2000 Approximately 23 Copper coin - 19 Copper coin - 26 Copper coin - 29 Copper coin Donation Packaging + TP price of three level 60-69 fine trinkets / 15 Commendations, Donation Packaging + TP price of three level 70-79 fine trinkets / 19 Commendations, Donation Packaging + TP price of three level 80 rare trinkets / 300 Commendations, and Donation Packaging + TP price of three level 80 exotic trinkets / 2000 Commendations. The cheapest fine trinkets 60-69 are Opal Platinum Earring, the cheapest fine trinkets 70-79 are Sapphire Mithril Earring, the cheapest rare trinkets are "Magi's Ring", and the cheapest exotic trinkets are Candy Corn Orichalcum Amulet, but this could change over time. Best return ratio, but you'll end up with more Commendations than you need.
Weapon / Armor 5-600 35 Copper coin - 49 Copper coin Donation Packaging + TP price of three level 70-79 exotic weapons / 550 Commendations; Donation Packaging + TP price of three level 70-79 masterwork weapons / 120 Commendations. Weapons are typically cheaper than armors. Any combination of x3 weapon/armor of the same quality, within 10 levels (e.g. 40-49, 50-59, etc) works; the best ratios for fine and rare weapons/armors are very close to those of exotics. Masterworks are a bad deal unless TP prices drop significantly.

So, what does this mean? The money value of one Commendation varies somewhere between 19 Copper coin and Silver coin 34 Copper coin. Therefore, the salvage kit effectively costs between Silver coin 75 Copper coin and 33 Silver coin 50 Copper coin. Of course, that's only an average value; in reality, you will always end up with more Commendations than you need unless you trade in for some number divisible by 25. I'd estimate that the best trade if you just wanted to get a single Kit is three level 70-79 fine trinkets + three level 50-59 fine weapons or armors, for exactly 25 Commendations. This should cost about Silver coin 95 Copper coin. There might be better combinations, though.

Finally, using that value, the current price per use of the DB3 Kit is Copper coin or so (2.38 exactly). That's a little worse than a Crude Salvage Kit and a little better than a Basic Salvage Kit. I think it would be safe to put a price per use of "about 3" on the page, since there are hundreds and hundreds of junky trinkets/weapons/armors and I don't see their prices going way up anytime soon.

Refined materials from salvaging[edit]

Not long ago, I salvaged a weapon and got an ancient wood plank from it. I have never gotten one before and I salvage a huge amount. I've never gotten a bar, nor have I ever got a bolt of cloth. The item I was salvaging was a rare weapon, and I was using a mystic salvage kit. Has anyone else ever gotten a refined crafting material from salvaging anything? Psycho Robot (talk) 20:24, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

It wasn't a rare, but yes, I got 1 or 2 ancient wood planks from something recently, with a crude salvage kit. Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 21:00, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Real values[edit]

Several people say basic kits have a ~5% chance to recover upgrades the same as crude despite the description, my own tests show 29.2% on fine salvage kits despite the 40% description in 250 salvages. Shouldn't this be pointed out in the article? 83.80.181.220 09:01, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

Cost reference for Master Salvage.[edit]

There's a note that indicates a cost benefit if 100 gems cost less than xx silver yy copper. Since 100 gems costs 12+ gold and the cost has been that high (from day one?) Should the reference to gem cost be removed?

The gem price has been above 1 gold/100 gems for a long time, but not at the beginning of the game, no. At this point, Mystic Kits are never a bargain unless you got the stones for free - mostly from Achievement Chests. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 02:42, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
The note used to be more important, when it was harder to acquire mystic stones outside the gem shop. Since it's unlikely we'll ever see gold:gem ratio so low, it makes sense to abbreviate the note. I do think it's important to saying "ignoring the cost," because there's still an opportunity cost of using the stones. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 23:23, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

Feedback 2016/08/18[edit]

Some newer players may be confused about Salvage Kit properties, such as not being able to stack. --Inculpatus cedo (talk) 05:42, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Normally the "stackability" (?) of an item is handled on the specific item's page, but even then it's often skipped or suppressed. If you see a convenient way to sneak that text in (or any other text you feel would help new players), be our guest!
The problem with being familiar with the game is that one doesn't always see the stumbling blocks that new players hit, so I'm not too sure what phrasing would be best. G R E E N E R 17:27, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Nov 13, 2018 update to salvaging[edit]

This wiki page seems to have ignored this update (and in fact the wiki seems to have skipped over the salvaging update entirely in the patch notes section). Except for the black lion kit, you can no longer salvage upgrades directly. "Salvage Kits: The chance to extract a rune or sigil from equipment is now a chance to salvage the upgrades directly into their crafting materials. This does not affect Black Lion Salvage Kits, which will continue to always extract upgrades intact." The big question is whether this new gem store kit salvages upgrades like a black lion kit or gives the symbols. (Though at least one person has said it gives the upgrades and gives motes which makes no sense.)

To salvage means to break down, not recover or extract. The Runecrafter Salvage kit has a 100% chance to salvage runes/sigils, but will not extract or recover runes/sigils. You can find extended discussions about the different salvage kits on the official forums. Inculpatus cedo (talk) 21:17, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
AH! That's the difference that has been confusing me since the change.Thank you for clarifying! (Oh, woops, forgot to sign my question before.) Kittentamer (talk) 13:18, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
