Reflect percentage[edit]

Reflect 100%? Dominox 16:56, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Does it affect Point Blank and Ranged skills? -- Blue Phoenix User Blue Phoenix Phoenix inverted.jpg 23:26, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
it would have to, considering all attacks are skills; why discriminate against some professions and enemies (which are ranged and/or aoe only, or touch-range only) ~~ User Kiomadoushi sig.png Kiomadoushi 23:34, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
It doesn't reflect back the damage (reflecting is something else entirely, which traited may works against melee swings as well as physical projectiles). On the other hand, Retaliation does a fixed independent damage each time someone hits the wearer, no matter what the damage is and actually even if no damage is applied, as long as it is a confirmed hit (like on a blocked hit). --Leonim 12:49, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Maybe more. I'm in the starting zone where my regular attacks hit for <10. Retaliation hit for upto 70 on a Lv7 mob. Lightblade 17:23, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

How much damage?[edit]

Anyone have any clue how much damage is given back to the attacker. If it is no % of the damage? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:DIVA (talk).

It's a fixed amount based on the power from the person applying the boon. --Haasth 21:39, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

Just to be explicit, this doesn't scale with Condition Damage at all, only Power? --JohnnyCat 17:02, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

From personal testing it scales with power at a ratio of 1 damage per 15 power, completely ignores armor, does not scale with condition damage and does not depend on the amount of damage dealt to you. Deals around 300 damage depending on power. --Somedude 17:41, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
My testing shows damage = 198.45 + 0.0746*power at level 80. So a base of 267 and adding 1 damage per 13.4 power, but otherwise agrees with Somedude, above. Also, it looks like the "base" damage increases quadratically with level (including base stats, it's 0.083*level^2 + 0.188*level + 8.47) . I'm going to update main page with level 80 data but I'm not quite sure how to handle level scaling when the numbers don't work out pretty (ie everything except base stats). ~ Capric 19:05, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

Stacking[edit]

Didn't they say that Retaliation stacks in intensity? So why does the article state duration? Has it changed? Gnarf 09:32, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

If they said it did, it has changed. Currently it doesn't stack in intensity but in duration. --Haasth 21:38, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

Please confirm new information[edit]

User 76.23.244.19 changed retaliation from the condition damage it was to a percentage. Can anyone confirm this before we revert it? 22:40, 12 June 2012 (UTC) --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Cheapy (talk).

I've been hearing from some people that Retaliation was different in BWE2, in that it reflected incoming damage, rather than only returning a flat amount of damage. I'm also now seeing that the tooltip for Retaliation-applying skills reflects this change, in that it says specific for retaliation "Reflect incoming damage back to its source." I'll see if I can confirm this during the stress test today, and make the appropriate change if necessary. -- DrakeWurrum 13:50, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
To wit - when I originally tried to say that retaliation is different from reflect, what I was told is that retaliation doesn't block the damage and return the projectile, just that it returns damage to the attacker. If this is true, that would explain why it stacks in duration, no? -- DrakeWurrum 13:51, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
I updated the description to match the current in-game tooltip, which does not specifically mentioned how much damage is actually returned - so we currently have absolutely no way of knowing, without further testing, if it's a flat damage return or a percent damage return. Since it stacks in duration, I currently believe it's the latter, (and perhaps user 76.23.244.19 was posting his findings?), but I shouldn't jump to conclusions. -- DrakeWurrum 00:00, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
On BWE3 Retaliation did 367 damage at lvl 80. It gained 7% of bonus power.--Inoshiro 17:55, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
I can approve this new information. Also retaliation actually seems to "reflect" If there is is mititgation in damage, it is below 10% --DIVA 05:48, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

August 31 2012: As of this time, it is confirmed through testing that it is returning a fixed amount of damage Due to mixed stats on gear, it was not possible to confirm whether power or condition or another stat affected the amount of damage return. At level 35 with 706 attack, 255 condition, and 20 heal vs. mobs that were hitting for 200-350, it was around 68 dmg returned per hit. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Slesh (talk).

Damage Reduction[edit]

I am a little confused now. Does Retaliation reduce the incomming damage? If so than by how much? Is it the amount it throws back or based on other stats? Or is it similar to the GW1 skill effect Retribution and just throws damage back without reducing it? Kerigolas 14:16, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

I did some testing last BWE, I can give you that much information:
1. Retaliation got a mega buff. It seemed to do almost triple as much damage as before.(BWE2=132dmg)
2. "Power" does seem to boost retaliation damage/percentages. As far as I can say maxing power adds a significant +% to retaliation damage.
--DIVA 22:49, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Duration nerf[edit]

As of the last stress test, almost all skills grant less retaliation. Also the trait [Vengeful] got nerfed to

While Guardian will be my main, I see this with pleasure. Since retal got buffed, those builds spamming it everywhere and keeping it permanently (!!) on them were overpowered...--DIVA 15:57, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

"Not to be confused with reflect"[edit]

Is this new? I just saw this description of Reflection in the stress test today: "Reflect incoming damage back to it's source." Time to remove the note, since it's really reflection now? Previously Unsigned 22:38, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

Retaliation does not affect siege equipment[edit]

For the updateon September 17th, siege equipment is no longer affected by the retaliation boon.

Triggers for Retaliation[edit]

So it seems that the amount per tick has been calculated but what causes a tick of retaliation to hit the source? Consider a shortbow ranger spamming crossfire. Each skill use of crossfire should proc retaliation from my understanding. But what of the possible bleeding stack? Will each tick of damage from bleeding, the little numbers of 50-120dmg you see arcing over your head in pvp when you bleed, cause Retaliation to hit the ranger for that previously calculated fixed amount?

if you have retaliation and you are hit by mind wrack, does the mesmer that used it take retaliation damage?

Retaliation does not fire on block[edit]

This has been tested by the folks over at Gaming Stackexchange and you can see proof in the video. http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/95677/does-retaliation-counts-on-blocked-mitigated-damage. The page needs updating to reflect this, I'd make the change but I feel it would be reverted without question. Hence this comment in discussion. Neon 10:48, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

5 Stacks of Duration, right? Not Intensity.[edit]

The wording of the Release Notes of Feb 26 2013 is very confusing: "Reduced the number of maximum of stacks of Retaliation allowed to five (was 25). Duration still stacks." This seems to imply that the 5 stacks (which used to be 25) are intensity stacks, and that it somehow stacks by both intensity and duration. I wonder if someone can clear this up with with some numbers (not with just how they understand the description). Thanks. --Alad 01:24, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Talk:Game updates/2013-02-26#Retaliation Stacking--Relyk ~ talk > 01:27, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
Perhaps you should reword the info about the "Intensity can be stacked up to 5 times" to "Can be stacked up to 5 times" until some hard numbers come in. Unless you're sure it stacks by intensity *and* duration. In which case it would be good to explain how that works on the page.--Alad 01:55, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

spvp kill[edit]

On the list of skills and dmg that you received when you die in spvp if you are killed from dmg returned via retaliation would it list the name of the skill that kills you or would it list retaliation as the cause of death? I got called a hacker just now because a thief had its own skill in the list of things that contributed to the kill and yet I am a guardian. hope someone can help because I don't want my ingame reputation tarnished.Spark GOLD "talk" 18:05, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

That makes perfect sense, since their own skill was the source of the damage, your retaliation just reflected it. There's no way you could hack something like that anyway, and anyone with a brain would laugh at that person's claim. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 18:23, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

April 2013 Update[edit]

Says: "Updated confusion and retaliation effects to do the same damage as they do in sPvP." I guess that means Retaliation behaves differently in sPvP. Not mentioned here. (The damage page would have to be updated as well; confusion is mentioned there.) --Alad 14:15, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Does Retaliation Damage Count Towards 'Tagging' Foes in WvW?[edit]

If a player has the boon retaliation running, and an enemy player attacks and takes retaliation damage from you character, even if your character never actively attacks back, does it count towards 'tagging' the foe, so your character gets credit later if others kill the foe? JonJonz July 18 2013 (UTC)

Damage Multipliers[edit]

Is the damage from Retaliation affected by direct-damage multipliers like Vulnerability or Fiery Wrath? --Felbryn (talk) 18:59, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

I know for certian that Retaliation's damage is not increased by Vulnerability, and I think it's not increased by +% bonuses from traits or equipment. The second one I have not tested however. The first I have thoroughly tested. Habar414 (talk) 20:13, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Light Aura[edit]

I think it's worth mentioning that light aura (from light field + leap finisher) also is a source of retaliation. Thoughts? USSVagrant (talk) 23:18, 5 June 2016 (UTC)

It sure is. Added. --Gimmethegepgun (talk) 00:38, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

Feedback 2017/03/01[edit]

I think blasting a light field doesn't give you retaliation anymore. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 192.222.210.145 (talk) at 00:14, 2 March 2017 (UTC).

Correct, it now blasts condi removal. Will edit that. -Darqam 00:24, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

Feedback 2022/01/08[edit]

Retaliation still exists as a boon on wolves you have to kill for the "Uprooting the Iron Marches" quest in living world season 2, chapter 3. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 77.191.78.165 (talk) at 09:11, 8J anuary 2022 (UTC).

This page documented the effect with the id 873, which got completely replaced by Resolution, while the wolves have the effect Retaliation (effect) with the id 16539 (not really a boon in classical sense: persistent effect with no duration, cannot be removed with boon removal skills). --Tolkyria (talk) 09:34, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
Added a disambig template at the top to let people find the other five pages. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 10:04, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
