notes vs Notes

I thought we generally kept section headers lowercase (except for proper nouns and verbatim transcription). It's really not a major issue, but I've seen some go for uppercase and some for lowercase (myself included), so maybe we should agree on something for consistency. pling User Pling sig.png 16:09, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

A wiki is not a newspaper, where headlines are in title case. Article and section titles on a wiki follow sentence-case capitalization rules. Wikipedia set the standard, the original GuildWiki followed it, and GWW/GW2W have inherited it. And it is a good thing, too. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 18:56, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
Not exactly. All sorts of publications use title case, including some paper-based encyclopedias. Wikipedia set a standard, not the standard. And the GWW/GWiki so-called standards were not supported by everyone. It's fine to prefer one form over the other and choose it for GW2W, but let's not pretend that one is better than the other or that there's some sort of international standard for English-language wikis that should be followed.
In theory, this should be moot, since the GW2W community decided some time ago to use sentence case -- someone would have to propose a change to the current guidelines and I don't see that happening with most of the admin team arguing in favor of what the wiki has been using since mid-2012. 75.37.20.28 19:03, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
Sentence case looks cleaner. Of course, that's likely because people like myself despise seeing others That Always Type In Uppercase Letters For Whatever Reason. I find reserving title case for when we transcribe official information from the site is great for communicating what information is coming from ArenaNet themselves.--Relyk Christmas sig.jpg talk 19:32, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
To clear something up, when discussing content issues (like this), admins are just normal users, so our opinions should carry the same weight as anyone else. Also, this discussion is a kind of proposal in itself - the outcome of this discussion will determine how section headers should be capitalised. A separate, formal kind of proposal doesn't have to be made (although, for big changes, it's good to ask for more input via [[GW2W:RFC]] and the like). pling User Pling sig.png 22:37, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
Guild Wars 2 Wiki Notes is actually the proper way to do this sort of thing. It also tends to match much of the ways the patch notes are posted on the official forums. -- Tarun 00:55, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
The official Guild Wars 2 wiki doesn't have to follow the capitalisation put forward by ArenaNet (fortunately), nor does it feel appropriate for a wiki to use title case on section header unless copying specific content verbatim. Patch notes are just notes so formatting should be standard, which is sentence case. - Infinite - talk 02:00, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
You need to take into consideration that it's a section title; as such, title case does apply. Grammar Monster - Title Case may help to clarify. I hope this helps. -- Tarun 00:20, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
Different organisations or publications have their own house styles. I think Wikipedia, also a wiki (and a much more well-known, extensive one), tends to use lowercase section titles. GWW also did. So it's not out of the realms of possibility that we, also, could use lowercase section titles. pling User Pling sig.png 18:18, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
I also take into consideration how ArenaNet publishes their updates which is also done in Title Case. You can see this looking through the past updates. As such, this makes the "Guild Wars 2 Wiki notes" where notes being lowercase look very inconsistent and rather unprofessional. Generally, headers and such matching is a good quality to have for readers. -- Tarun 21:14, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
It's the same thing, the wiki is not ArenaNet and is not required to follow the same format as the official website. Keeping non-verbatim section headers lowercase is consistent with the rest of the wiki.--Relyk ~ talk > 21:23, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
We use and have always used lower case in article titles (Talk:Game updates), why would we do something different for sections? Felix Omni Signature.png 22:22, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
Seem to be overlooking the very obvious... wiki.guildwars2.com. Also, just because something is made or done incorrectly, doesn't mean you adhere to it. However, on the subject of titles lets look at the Mediawiki default title for the main page on installation. It's "Main Page". -- Tarun 00:42, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Somehow it shows the second last update on the main page instead of the last one, I already noticed this some days ago with a different update but thought it might have been a temp problem with just one update but now I rather think the pointer is set to the wrong position [[84.180.64.210 18:48, 9 March 2014 (UTC)]]

Downloading

If you begin a large update, get part way through and then exit the client, and re-launch it, does what you downloaded of the update retain, or does it start from the beginning again? Can anyone tell me for sure, because I think its the latter based on my observations, but I'm not certain, as I remember from experience that the old GW1 client would retain whatever data you had already downloaded, and take off from that point once you re-launched. Puk 11:21, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

It keeps what was downloaded, but the percentage bar will show the percentage of remaining files starting from what was left, so if you download 10% of a 1GB update, you will download 100MB, if you then restart the client/download, you will start at 0%, but on 100% it will only have downloaded 900MB. --Tera 12:06, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Update 2 - 26 February 2013

not mentioned yet was a little fix for a change that happened after the first update. when activating a harvesting tool in your inventory it was not replaced by the previously active tool, instead the former active tool was put into the next free inventory slot leaving the place of the tool you activated empty. so if you use a second set of tools (like orichalcum) with you the sorting in your inventory was totally scrambled when switching between the sets. thanks anet for fixing this so quick. Suggestion - Key changes summary page

Does anyone else think it would be worth having a page that summarises the main changes from each update for returning players and anyone else who has been out of the loop for a while? The official forum is currently getting at least 2 or 3 posts a day from people who stopped playing at some point in the past and who have recently come back and want to know what's changed. Replying to these threads over and over gets very boring, and as a result most get very few replies, but at the same time it seems unfair to direct someone to the full list of patch notes when they probably don't care that skills they don't remember have had their recharge increased and bosses they've never heard of have had bug fixes and don't want to scroll through pages and pages of that looking for the big changes.

I did start writing a topic on the forum to serve this purpose but the problem with that is firstly I'd have to keep it updated entirely by myself because no one else can edit my posts, and secondly I don't know what to include. Some things are obvious like Living Story updates or when AC was re-worked, but for example I don't know which updates are really important for professions I don't play and which are minor tweaks that didn't have a big impact.

So I'm thinking this would work much better as a wiki page where everyone can edit it and then when someone want to know they can just be given a link, find the point where they left and start reading. Danikat (talk) 19:00, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Does release fit the bill? Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 19:29, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

The Game updates article and wiki slowness

Hey everyone,

About 1h ago, the wikis were a bit slow and, after a quick investigation on our backend, we think that it confirms some sort of pattern that I mentioned in this journal entry about two months ago. So I'm coming here to start a specific discussion about this page. It seems that these spike in activity on our servers is correlated to update notes being posted on the forums (we're not sure why this is happening but may be someone has an idea?).

From a technical standpoint, we can see 2 possible causes (and there may be more):

  1. Number of files accessed (you can see that by yourself in a browser's developer console, once the page is loaded); there are a lot of them and, although we're not entirely sure that this could explain a spike in activity, we're wondering whether it's contributing to the issue;
  2. DPL; this could also explain the spike in server load, since it's a dynamic request (and during the spike that happened about 1h ago, the last update notes pulled was from last Friday); is there a way that this can be cached? Or optimized to reduce server load?

Let us know what you think about this. Thanks! --Stephane Lo Presti talk 00:17, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

We use {{skill icon}} for generating the icons, it's is a SMW template and also a dynamic request. It can cause problems if you have 100 icons on an update page, we made {{simple icon}} for that. The SMW is cached afaik, but it might be called every time DPL pulls the page up. I don't know enough about it, but using {{simple icon}} for now wouldn't hurt.--Relyk ~ talk < 01:11, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
The DPL that builds this page is what prevents it from being cached, that's correct - and because of that, all the SMW icon templates have to be re-parsed every time the page is accessed. I think it's reasonable to conclude that this page is indeed what's causing the server utilization spikes.
What I would suggest, rather than trying to find ways to replace DPL with cacheable SMW or anything like that, is to rethink how we are handling game updates in the first place. Anet is currently releasing updates in clearly-defined "releases," and on the forums, all the updates that occur during a release are documented not in separate posts, but as replies to the initial update notes post for that release. Could we convert to a similar arrangement on the wiki - use a single article for all updates within a release? If we did that, we could get rid of the current DPL that consolidates the 5 most recent updates (which isn't really accurate anyway, because it only tracks by day, and there are often multiple updates on the first day of a release) and not have to worry about caching issues at all. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 01:41, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Isn't there a parameter to force dpl to cache? And wouldn't another option be to not use any SMW on the update page? --JonTheMon (talk) 01:52, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes, but I was trying to steer the discussion to a "treat the disease, not the symptom" line of thinking. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 02:05, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Sure treat the disease, but make sure people can find the update that happened on the 22nd by following a link to the 20131022 article and not to have to remember when the last release was. ANet's practice of one forum page for a release is counter-intuitive and I prefer the longstanding wiki practice of each update getting its own article. Another solution would be not displaying most icons until maybe a week later -- if the icons are the root problem. I also don't see why caching is a bad thing. Icons change infrequently. 75.37.20.38 02:56, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Each update doesn't get its own page, each day with one or more updates gets a page. But yeah, I like that approach better than putting subsequent updates on one forum page without indication of the date or the latest update. Ishmael's proposal of killing two birds with one stone makes some sense; it would be organizing game updates by biweekly instead of by day (and organizing those into months).--Relyk ~ talk < 03:36, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Our IT engineer pointed me to the variable ExtDynamicPageList::$respectParserCache, saying that it may help with DPL caching: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:DynamicPageList_%28third-party%29 However it's very possible that this variable could cause a lot more harm than good. Any one has an opinion on the use of that variable? Thanks. --Stephane Lo Presti talk 16:08, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Bumping the subject. Tomorrow is release day and it's likely that the problem will occur again. It's also a good opportunity to test any change to that page. Let me know if there's anything we can do to help on our side. Thanks --Stephane Lo Presti talk 17:36, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Living world headers

ANet has been doing this for a while now, that they first have a level 3 header for "Living World", and then a level 4 header for the release, followed by some other things in level 5 or lower. When there is only one release in the living world category, I have been changing this to be "Living World: Release name" on level 3 instead, to reduce the overall depth by one. Unless you have good reasons why this shouldn’t be the case, I’d like to continue that for future updates too. poke | talk 19:36, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

The Personal Story section under the Feb 15, 2015 updates says:

Update - November 22, 2016

Guild Wars 2 Wiki Notes

Delicious Desserts quest re-enabled (Koollan the Little Builder dialogue works now).

Undocumented changes since the big update on Tuesday 6 June 2017

As of this time, I have noticed 2 undocumented changes since Tuesday.

1. I don't know which of the 3 patches (listed here https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/updates/Game-Update-Notes-June-6-2017) that have been released so far made this change , but the three planted Fire Orchid groups outside of Draconis Mons (of which there are always 3 nodes together in a group) now reset daily instead of every few hours (I don't know exactly how many it was previously, but it was more frequent than regular non-rich gathering nodes).
Note that I can't confirm this for the Hidden Garden group of nodes because I skip those since I don't want to wait for keepers/portals. I also don't know if the behaviour of the seven (singular) nodes in Draconis Mons has changed or not, because I've stopped farming that map since I finished making The Wayfarer's Henge.

A side effect of the change to the Fire Orchid nodes outside of Draconis Mons (the Dry Top Oasis nodes are working fine) is that ANet seem to have introduced a bug with the Melandru Temple nodes.
The 2 northwest-most nodes appear in yellow text like normal, but they don't respond to being interacted with at all. The Chop [F] text on yellow background appears, but they just can't be harvested at all. So this bug is like a double-whammy on top of the nerf. And since it isn't a major bug, ANet probably won't fix this for a very long time (if ever).

You also cannot farm the orchids on multiple characters any more - once you harvest on even a single character, they disappear on other characters that go the fertile soil spots. To be fair, I was getting 7-10 orchids per character, across 10-12 toons, so 70+ free orchids, per day, was likely not what they wanted. And that was on top of the regular farming cap.--MashMash (talk) 02:52, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

2. The orange event icons for Class 2 Magic Rifts no longer appear on the map (M) and minimap as of the 3rd patch listed in the official forum thread I linked above. I think the rifts are still there though and work otherwise work normally.
My daily routine consists of getting the chests at the end of the two destinations 7-1 and 11-1, and it was only today that I haven't managed to see any unrevealed rifts appearing on the map and minimap at all. I had to camp at a few locations that I know usually have rifts nearby and keep pulsing the Class 2 Rift Stabiliser and hope that a rift appears. Note that for my usual settings, I have my General Options -> Content Guide set to Disable Personal Story. --175.142.44.17 17:05, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

I left a note and a link to the above on the latest update's page. Thanks for the in-depth documentation! G R E E N E R 21:12, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Another bug I've noticed (I'm not sure if it started happening with Tuesday's big update) is that the Armors in the Octovine meta don't have their breakbars displayed anymore, though it seems to still be there and working normally. That is, it seems to be a purely visual bug. --124.82.61.65 16:00, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Exactly as patch notes released, or do we fix them?

There's a few misplaced things from the patch notes, like a Trait in the skills section, stuff like that. Do we fix these or leave them as Anet released them? -- User:Frvwfr2 23:18, 7 November 2017 (UTC)

You're free to edit anything in under "Guild Wars 2 Wiki Notes" as you see fit, but anything above that should be left exactly as is pretty much. - Doodleplex 23:29, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
What about things like https://wiki.guildwars2.com/index.php?title=Game_updates%2F2017-11-07&type=revision&diff=1570576&oldid=1570547 <- this change? I nested the others because that was how ANet had presented them, with a summary line for the Conjure skill, but for FGS they did not. I know it's super minor, but curious. It does look better this way. Also, is there no link on the page to the update notes themselves? -- User:Frvwfr2 15:25, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
Little edits like that are fine, especially if they help to mimic how the notes are presented on the forums. And no, we don't link to them, though I don't know why. My guess would be because we link to the forums on the top of the wiki where the patch notes are, but like I said, that's just a guess. - Doodleplex 19:58, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
