Talk:Flanking

This is a rather interesting way to go for Anet. It gives yet another dimension beside skilfully using the environment, environment weapons and combining skills for greater effect. What's next? Ge4ce 11:45, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Well, it's certainly not unheard of. There were some similar gameplay aspects in the original Guild Wars. Critical hits against fleeing foes, etc. --208.105.170.7 14:12, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Moved from 'Talk:Body Direction'[edit]

moved from Talk:Body Direction

Yet another thing I don't understand what it would get deleted for... :/ Well, "Body Direction" sounds strange, but the information itself is good to know and should be on the wiki... --HasselmannenUser Hasselmannen-Icon-01.png 15:18, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

See Body direction. The information isn't getting deleted, just getting a new home. -~=Ϛρѧякγ User Sparky, the Tainted guided sig.png (τѧιк) 16:41, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
What Sparky said. ^^ Yay new homes! --AmannelleUser Amannelle Me.jpg 17:43, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
Might be better merged into skill? Mostly because I'm not sure we're going to get a lot more information about this? Body direction skill improvement was a global modifier on melee type skills in GW1... -- Aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 22:21, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
It looks to me like there are going to be specific skills that get an upgrade when attacking a certain side. For such an occasion of course we would document this in the skill page. As for regular damage attacks, lets wait and see. I do think this page will eventually become useless, and be required to merge with skill, as you said, Aspectacle.--Corsair@Yarrr 23:14, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
I added the information to skill too because I think it is interesting to get all information about skill behaviours in one place. I don't think this page needs to exist at the moment, but I don't really care enough to argue about it. :) -- Aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 00:52, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
Well, I'm not against deleting this page, even though I created it.. :P But I think the information is good to have somewhere as it isn't something that is obvious. EDIT: Oh, and I also think it's enough to have it in the skill page as long as it's only affecting skills, else it could be put into a melee attack page or something. But as far as I understood they only mentioned it in combination with skills and not normal attacks even though it probably affects that too. --HasselmannenUser Hasselmannen-Icon-01.png 20:40, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I think this should be moved. Aside from pointing out the obvious, it seems to be solely tied to skills and attacks - if it isn't only for the former, it should go into an article for the later. -- Konig/talk 22:03, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

in depth effect table[edit]

what about adding in a table the "position required" and "triggered effect" lines after the "skill name" line? just say what you think ... CaiusTheBig User talk:Caiusthebig 15:48, 10 September 2010 (UTC)

If there are enough of these types of skills then I think that having headers with the body direction then all skills that benefit from that direction listed below it would be better.--Elemental Phantom 18:59, 10 September 2010 (UTC)

Body position[edit]

I was thinking about making an article with the said title and then merging this article as a sub-section. The idea is to also incorporate other directional-based skills such as pull and leap into the same article. Any onbjections? --Xu Davella 10:28, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Be bold. :P I approve of this idea, but I'd like to see a comprehensive article of all possible effects of positioning, such as aggro, as well as inclusion of sink, float, shadow step, etc.... Mediggo 11:04, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Personally I think I'd prefer you create a separate article and have a description / summary of it, with a link to the "full" article.
While currently this is of debatable logic, as the article accumulates skills, traits, and hopefully a little more text, it could be the prudent course of action. Just a thought.
Basically an altered version of what Mediggo said. One to two paragraphs at most on each, and a link back to find the relevant skills, traits, and perhaps a more in-depth explanation. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 22:55, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Moving this to Flanking[edit]

I tagged Flanking for deletion so this article can be moved and receive a proper name/term that is used in-game in various skill and trait descriptions. Mediggo 09:48, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

I only see 3 traits that use the term flank: Flanking Strikes, Hunter's Tactics, and Side Strike. There are 2 skills with "flank" in the name, Flanking Strike (dual skill) and Flanking Strike (spear skill). I don't know if that's enough to qualify it as an "official" in-game term.
On the other hand, flanking is probably still a better "unofficial" term than body direction, although I'd prefer we get more input on this before moving. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 15:58, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
I think it really makes sense since flanking actually is a combat mechanics. In fact, doesn't attacking from side or behind in general increase damage done, even without and traits or specific skills? Mediggo 16:07, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

:/[edit]

Pretty much all instances of "body direction" on this page can be replaced by "facing." If it's not an official term, I'd suggest axing it entirely from the page. -Auron 02:54, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

What's the default effect?[edit]

This page and the attack page both seem to imply that all attacks are more effective when made from a flanking position (not just those that explicitly give bonuses when flanking), but neither page says exactly what the advantage is. Is there one, and if so, what is it? Felbryn (talk) 04:41, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

At least for auto-attacks, flanking seems to have no effect. Measured some auto-attacks with arc_dps with 0% flanking and 100% flanking, averaged run of 3 minutes for each yielded essentially the same number when adjusted for the amount of critical hits. Kolichikov (talk) 00:17, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
Flanking is specific to attacks mentioning it. —Kvothe (talk) 16:27, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
