Type of sickle to use[edit]

Does the grade of the gem you receive depend on the sickle you used to harvest it? If you use an Orichalcum sickle, will you get an orb every time? 108.13.221.103 02:06, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Kay so I found another Coral right away and tested it using an Ori sickle instead of the Mithril one I used previously, still got a tentacle. Maybe each node has a level associated with it, depending on the zone your in? Or maybe it's just random up to the level of the sickle you're using. I can't imagine you could harvest a Coral Orb with a Darksteel sickle. 108.13.221.103 02:09, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
I just harvested two Coral in Cursed Shore with a mithril sickle, got a Tentacle (tier 5) and an Orb (tier 6). The item must be based on the area, I'm guessing a darksteel sickle would work in Cursed Shore too, but I haven't found an NPC that sells them there in the short time I've been looking. Rare node?[edit]

One of the notes on the article reads "Outside of Orr, coral nodes are a RARE plant node (0-2 nodes possible per defined area)". By 'defined area' does it mean maps, or sections of maps? Because I've been doing circuits of Cursed Shore (allowing time in between for nodes to respawn) and I've been finding 0-2 nodes in each part of the map where they're supposed to spawn (e.g. none in Cathedral of Verdance, 1 in Winterknell Isle, 2 in Desmina's Hallow's). So while the map overall seems to have more, because there are more areas they can spawn, each individual area doesn't seem any different to those outside of Orr.

Either way I think the note should be made clearer - either remove the 'Outside of Orr' part, or change 'defined area' to 'map', but I'm not sure which it should be. Danikat (talk) 15:34, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

That note was added yesterday, at the same time as the note about Vial of Manganese Dioxide. This makes it look like it was added by a player who was hunting the manganese and was so frustrated by their bad luck they decided to update the wiki to warn others what they were getting themselves into. Commendable, but not a reliable source of data. I'm going to take down the note for now. --Idris (talk) 16:19, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
Having just finished my own Manganese Dioxide collecting I don't think it's accurate to say that you'll only get 1 per 30-50 coral nodes either. It took me 58 coral nodes to get 8 Manganese (all collected in Iron Marches on a level 65 character using an Ori quality pick). I'm not sure about my first two because I wasn't counting exactly. Obviously that's a VERY small sample but either I had really amazing luck, consistently over several days, or it takes much less than 30-50 nodes to get 1 Manganese.
For now I'm going to remove the numbers, simply saying it's a rare drop and you'll need to harvest several coral nodes to get one. But maybe we could start collecting drop rate data? Danikat (talk) 14:31, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
I feel that we should collect drop rate data, I've harvested around 170 since starting this silly Bifrost T3 collection, and yet to see a drop of Vial of Manganese Dioxide, while the drop from the Iron nodes was done in about an hour of farming, this has taken farming to new heights. I've used Butterfly Harvesting Flute, the Unbound Magic Gathering Tool, and max quality tools across many different characters. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Talk:Vial_of_Manganese_Dioxide I'm not sure if that's normal, but I'd like to see drop rates as it seems to vary greatly for everyone. Sorry for revival, just wanted to throw on my two cents. 104.237.90.149 04:55, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

Number of nodes[edit]

2 nodes per map with small or little water

4 nodes with maps with lots of water

Except Bitterfrost Frontier which has 6.

(once youve found the 2nd or 4th, move on) (also added simple (2/4 nodes) next to maps titles)

For a smooth farming run for all maps around the world start from

- Ember Bay

- Cursed Shore

- Malchor's Leap

- Straits of Devastation

- Sparkfly Fen

- Mount Maelstrom

- Timber Line Falls

- etc

- Ending in Bitterfrost Frontier

Drop rate of coral orb[edit]

I found the drop rate to be rather high, at least for the nodes in Bitterfrost (almost 50/50). Is it normal ?--82.240.45.162 10:04, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

I always felt this was the case, but I never did a statistical study. This was the method I most relied on for getting orbs for Amalgamated Gemstones. SarielV 20 x 20px 17:35, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
Yesterday I gathered three corals in Bitterfrost and all of them yielded coral orbs. Today I gathered from 4 and got 3 coral orbs. That's a good daily route while gathering unbound magic.--82.240.45.162 21:40, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
This matches my experience. I never did a statistical study, but the drop rate in Bitterfrost Frontier seems to be roughly 50/50 orbs/tentacles. Conversely, the coral nodes in the Sandswept Isles seem to drop NO orbs, only chunks and tentacles. Which is weird for a level 80 map, and a pity, seeing how many there are. Gudy (talk) 08:00, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
Are you sure you're using the right tools? You should only be getting tentacles, no chunks whatsoever. Sythe 15:59, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
I also would agree with your assessment. With the 12 nodes in Sandswept Isles I can get around 10 orbs using the Glyph of Bounty. Sythe 15:57, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
