Nika
“I will never stop protecting the empire. Even in death.
— Nika
Nika (1560[1]—circa 1590 CC) was a proficient assassin schooled in her youth at Shing Jea Monastery. She served Cantha as a member of the Obsidian Flame, and was one of the heroes who assisted in fighting Shiro Tagachi in 1072 AE.
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
Nika was a descendant of Vizu, an assassin who was instrumental in defeating Shiro Tagachi.[2] She began training at Shing Jea Monastery during Mhenlo's final year there and gained a reputation among even the older students for being a person not to anger.[3] At some point, she sought out Suun, the Oracle of the Mists in order to become Weh no Su.
Guild Wars Factions[edit]
A human hero met her in their own quest to become Weh no Su. She pointed to an acquaintance who knew the location of the oracle.[4] The acquaintance informed the hero that Nika knew the location of the oracle herself.[5] After the hero became Weh no Su, they encountered the assassin again when she and her fellow guild members were attacked by monstrous Afflicted. After assisting them with Master Togo and Brother Mhenlo, she and her guild stayed behind, promising their friendship, as the other left for Tahnnakai Temple.[6] She also joined the group in their efforts to reclaim the Echovald Forest and to ally themselves with the Kurzicks.
She rejoined the party in their mission to rescue the saltspray dragon Kuunavang from the influence of Shiro.[7] Similarly she assisted in clearing the palace of the emperor of Shiro's constructs.[8] Nika celebrated the defeat of Shiro Tagachi in the Divine Path.[9]
End of Dragons[edit]
Nika was eventually murdered by the Ministry of Purity. Her sense of duty made her remain as a ghost, forever watching over the Empire of the Dragon, while her cousin Mai made it out and could leave descendants that survived to this day. As a ghost, Nika witnessed the destruction of Kaineng during the Zhaitan Disaster.
Her ghost ended up haunting the end of a tricky path through Old Kaineng, where she rested and continued watching over the remains of Raisu Palace which made her feel uneasy.

Dialogue[edit]
- Huh...? A stranger, all the way up here? I don't know if you're wise or ignorant. I might be prone to think the latter...
- Who are you?
- Nika.
- Nika? That name...it sounds familiar.
- Familiar? I don't know your name; I don't suppose you'd know mine.
- You'd be surprised.
- Keeping your secrets close, are we? So, what's a lonely traveler doing up here? Walking among the dead of Kaineng... Taking in the sights?
- You could say that.
- It's tragic... Isn't it? Seeing it all like this... Collapsing from rot. Filled with maggots. The dead.
- Is that how you died? In the Zhaitan Disaster?
- Me? No, I was already gone. I watched it, though. I listened to every scream... I watched it crumble.
- I'm sorry.
- It is what it is. They rebuilt... Moved on. Only the souls of the forgotten still weep. Yearning to be remembered.
- Like who? You?
- I miss the silence. Ask whatever you'd like. Quickly. So I can rest again.
- What are you doing here? In the ruins?
- Watching Raisu Palace. I worry about whatever dwells within... I feel it. The corruption. I will never stop protecting the empire. Even in death.
- Raisu Palace?
- The former home of the royal family. It was mostly destroyed during the Zhaitan Disaster... But some ruins remain. I wouldn't recommend getting too close, though.
- Why not?
- It's filled with angry spirits and evil magics that I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy.
- Sounds pretty exciting, actually... (Goes back to "I miss the silence...")
- Thanks. I'll be careful.
- How did you die?
- Right to the tough ones, huh? It's not a particularly...inspiring story.
- I've got the time.
- After we defeated Shiro, I...I traveled for a while. I'd completed my goal, I avenged Vizu, but...
- But?
- Purists. Rotten narcissists and terrorists...
- Did they...?
- They did. But I carved out a good chunk of 'em before I went down... Mai made it out, at least. Her ancestors are out there, somewhere. In "New" Kaineng. I point my eyes toward them.
- I'm sorry, Nika. (Goes back to "I miss the silence...")
- Thank you for sharing your story.
- I'll let you rest.
- I'm not really into ghosts.
Notes[edit]
- Nika wears the True Assassin's Guise Outfit.
- Her face in Old Kaineng is different to her Mist echo. As a ghost, she has been updated to have a Canthan face.

- Born in: Wajjun Bazaar
- Nation: Cantha
- Profession: Assassin
- Age: 22
- Nika's past is shrouded in nearly as much mystery as Nika herself, though Master Togo has learned a bit about her—everyone knows the master of Shing Jea Monastery. She has also let slip to Master Togo, if not to Mhenlo and his friends, that she was born in Wajjun Bazaar, a market district not far from one of the largest ports in Cantha. Her father died mysteriously before she was born; her mother sent Nika to the secretive Conclave at a very young age to learn the art of the Assassin, a trade that the women of her family had practiced for centuries. Her mother, in fact, runs the largest Assassin's guild in all of Cantha. Nika killed her first man at age 10, and made her first solo kill when she was 12. She has never murdered anyone, to her way of thinking—assassination is her business, and she kills only to defend herself or her friends, or to fulfill a licensed contract.
- Nika joins Mhenlo's group almost by accident. She is impressed by the way the disparate group of heroes works so efficiently, and offers to fill a void left by a set of twin sisters that left the group earlier. She is wholly dedicated to only two things—avenging her ancestor Vizu and protecting the Empire of the Dragon.

- Guildmaster Luan: The Obsidian Flame is the oldest Assassin guild in Cantha. Our roots stretch back to Vizu. In fact, Nika is her direct descendant.

- Brother Mhenlo: Nika was just starting at Shing Jea my last year there, but I got to know her fairly well. She's an Assassin with the Obsidian Flame now and spends her time in Bukdek Byway, I believe. If anyone can help you find the Oracle of the Mists, she can. The only trick will be getting her to help you. She can be a bit willful, and believe me when I say you don't want to make her mad. Just tell her Master Togo sent you.
