You've not seen what I've seen... Not lost what I've lost. To see that there still may be good fortune in the world, and to see a future for my kind... That is enough to bring an old dragon to tears.

— Albax

Albax is one of the last remaining saltspray dragons. He can be found in his roost in Dragon's End after the Elder Dragon Soo-Won has been successfully subdued. Once his riddles have been solved, he joins Kuunavang in Arborstone.

Biography[edit]

Early years[edit]

Albax is an ancient saltspray dragon who claims to have seen the rise and fall of many empires over the ages.[1] Sometime prior to the Jade Wind, Albax spoke with Kuunavang, and began to look up to the dragon.

Guild Wars Factions[edit]

In 1382 CC (872 AE), Shiro Tagachi caused the Jade Wind, corrupting most of Albax's fellow saltspray dragons but for some reason sparing him, much to the saltspray's dismay.[1] Sometime around the mid-15th century CC, the Luxon ranger Maxeles and his crew mistook Albax for a drake and attacked him, taking one of his scales. The group of Luxons soon suffered bad luck, with the majority of them wiped out by Kurzicks. Coming to be known as Infortunatos Maxeles and realizing in hindsight Albax's identity, the ranger begged the Hero of Cantha to find Albax and return the necklace he had made from the saltspray's scale, explaining that he believed that Albax was roaming the Silent Surf. When the hero reached Albax, the dragon explained his history and thanked them for returning his scale. Inspired by the hero's courage, he chose to lift his curse upon Maxeles.[2]

Interim years[edit]

Following the Rising of Orr, Albax observed as the saltspray dragon Kuunavang built a relationship with the Elder Dragon Soo-Won to help the people of Cantha survive and recover, but did not have the courage or energy to join them.[1]

End of Dragons[edit]

After watching his race become corrupted again, this time by the Void, Albax thought he had lost his luck, and fearing the worst, hid from the Void in 1845 CC (1335 AE). Following the subjugation of Soo-Won and the defeat of the Void, he regained hope, and tasked the Pact Commander with solving his riddles to prove that luck still existed in the world.[1]

Once the Commander had gathered various tokens of good luck around the world based on the dragon's clues, Albax decided to travel to Arborstone where he was reunited with Kuunavang. The two dragons' meeting was bittersweet as they understood that they had lost many of their kind over the years, including Ishan, but they also resolved to seek out other dragons if any still existed out there. During the following conversations, Albax thanked the Commander for restoring hope in his heart and admitted to Kuunavang that the fear of losing himself to corruption had made him keep his distance initially. Both the Commander and Kuunavang comforted Albax, however, as they were happy that he no longer needed to live alone.[3]

In Arborstone (after completing Albax, the Unlucky)
Albax: All of these items you've found represent the luck of many different cultures. To see that there is still good will, and the luck that brings, in the world...
Talk more option tango.png I didn't take you for a sentimental dragon.
You've not seen what I've seen... Not lost what I've lost. To see that there still may be good fortune in the world, and to see a future for my kind... That is enough to bring an old dragon to tears.
Talk more option tango.png I'm happy I could help. What's next for you?
Kuunavang and I have a lot of catching up to do. After that, there are others like us out there. Maybe I can find the strength to find them.
Thank you, <Character name>. I am lucky to have met you.
Talk more option tango.png I hope you and Kuunavang enjoy each other's company.
Kuunavang: We do. Thanks to you.

Ambient dialogue[edit]

In Arborstone (after completing Albax, the Unlucky)
Albax: So many gone. But we're still here. How many others do you suppose are left?
Kuunavang: I'd like to find out.
Albax: So this is where Ishan fell?
Kuunavang: (sigh) Yes... defending mortals until the Void took him...
Albax: I should have come sooner, but when I saw what was happening... I was afraid.
Albax: Corruption seems to be the destiny of our kind. I couldn't bear the thought of it.
Kuunavang: You're here now, my friend.
Albax: Your colors...they've changed.
Kuunavang Mmm. As my bond deepened with Soo-Won, my colors followed. It's all I have left of her now.

Infortunatos Maxeles: Well met, hero. I was something of a hero myself, once. A Luxon Deep Ranger of the Serpent Clan. From the Echovald to the Jade Sea, I wandered, seeking treasure and adventure. My caravan was never poor, and gold was always near at hand. Then one day, I spotted a drake. So I ordered my men to attack it and take one of those glittering scales as a trophy. I was sure it would make me a bit of gold, and thought nothing of it...until the bad luck set in: My men died at the hands of Kurzick raiders, who left me alive to tell the tale. All of my trade agreements fell apart, for one reason or another. My home was overrun with Naga. My wife left me for a stronger Luxon. And now, my last coin has been stolen by cut-rate thieves. I can only surmise that it was no drake at all...it must have been Albax, the legendary Saltspray Dragon of Good Fortune! His ill will is the only explanation for this turn of events. As you can see, I still wear this Shimmering Scale Necklace around my neck. I had hoped it would bring me luck, but all the luck it's brought me is bad. Help an old man out, would you, <Character name>? I don't have the strength to track down Albax anymore, but maybe if you returned this Shimmering Scale Necklace to him, my bad luck would finally change. Last I heard, he was seen roaming the Silent Surf. [...]
Albax: You are bold to approach me thus, <Character name>. Most of my kin were corrupted by the Jade Wind two hundred years ago. Yet only I remain, the sole living incarnation of good fortune in all the land, and I will not harm you. I thank you for the return of this scale. Your courage inspires even my ancient heart. You may return to Infortunatos Maxeles, and tell him I have lifted my curse...but he should not risk my disfavor again.
