User talk:Siddius
Hey there, and welcome to the wiki! I hope you'll enjoy your stay here among the rest of us. However, the image you just uploaded is the same as this. In the future try scouting this page for information regarding the latest uploaded files so you know what to upload and what's already on the wiki. Thanks — Orrery 10:57, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
- Hey, Siddius. I don't know where you got the idea that all of us wiki users are assholes, unless it's because your trivia was reverted. Reverting edits with a small description that shows up in recent changes is typically how things work here, but my no means does that mean the people aren't courteous. Discussions really only arise if the revert is potentially controversial. Obviously, you still believed that Koda was a reference to Brother Bear, so you brought it up on the talk page. I don't think anyone holds anything against you, and I don't think anyone was "bitching" about anything. :)-- Shew 21:31, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
Dear Siddius[edit]
I want to open this message with another welcome: Welcome to the official GW2 wiki!
Before you get the implication that I am here to lecture you or to comment negatively on any edit you made; I am not here to do any of that. I am here to welcome you and to hopefully stop you from moving on with life in the current state of mind you might be in, when it comes to this place. You are valuable. You are someone who, with all the good intentions, made edits to the wiki, to hopefully enrich it with information. It probably feels to you right now as though you did something wrong. I want to press upon you that you definitely didn't do anything wrong. In fact, you made me open my eyes towards the reference you gave for the Koda article.
I believe you are correct in your assumption that it is in fact a reference to the film Brother Bear. I have done a little research for your argument; most of the information we have about Koda bears (haha, bears!) strong resemblance to the film indeed. The fact that you pointed it out has led to many things, which are all good! The reason why your edit to the trivia was reverted is because on this, or any wiki, people constantly change articles, when they see fit. Age old contributors do this, new contributors do this and even anonymous contributors do this. A wiki functions on these ever-changing article edits. Yours no different.
You did not vandalize articles, you did not hurt feelings and you did not do anything wrong. You are new to this wiki and if you leave now, this wiki might never see your potential. Hundreds of edits that may be extremely valuable are about to quite possibly never occur!
Instead of you leaving, I would suggest helping me brainstorm on your reference. We are both convinced it's the correct reference; we shall not be waltzed over just like that, okay?
Don't feel discouraged, whatever happens. Edits over edits and reverts simply just happen. As long as people disagree, it will. Even when they don't disagree, it will. But that doesn't mean you should give up! Instead, go to the talk page and open the discussion about why your edit was what it was (as you did!). Provide the information that supports your edit. Make yourself strong for it! No, it will not always succeed, but is that really a reason to give up and erase your entire existence here?
The wiki needs every contributor who feels strong about their edits. We're not exactly a big community yet, so we're very lucky to have you! That is, if you still want to be with us.
So what do you say; even with this start you made and might now be feeling so stressed about, will you show them that you're strong like bear and convince them you are correct? You got me convinced (I even elaborated why you were correct on the Koda talk page) and we can only convince others if we show them the information we based our assumptions on. Don't run away now, it will only leave you with a split feeling in your stomach for maybe a long while.
You are valuable and we really want to get to know you. And we hope you want to stay with us and get to know us as well.
I hope you respond or at least read this. It is the first time I have actually written such a comment on anyone's talk page. I believe you deserve to feel proud about your presence here!
With kind regards,
Infinite - talk 23:04, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
- @Siddush, this might be a total rehash of what Infinite wrote, but I feel it might help. If you read this, at the very least don't think that we are an exclusive group of elitist assholes. (Though at times, we may seem to be.) There have been several users who have previously stated that they believe the previous statement is true, and while I think that it, in a small way, reflects the perceived exclusiveness of the community, I do not believe that we are so exclusive that we actively try to prevent people from joining. Though, in defense of the several users you believe to be insulting you, I must say you're reaction was a bit over-reactive, but I also agree with you that the others went a bit too far.
- I would like to bring to your attention two very important, very core rules of this wiki. Assume Good Faith and Be Bold.
- Being bold is about taking the initiative with an edit and not worrying about the consequences. It is about editing and not being scared that your edits will be ripped apart mercilessly. This ties beautifully into assuming good faith. A user is bold, and the other members of the community are the ones who should be assuming good faith. You clearly wanted to help the wiki with a trivia that you felt was relevant. At that point, most of us here would be willing to discuss it with you, and we would be assuming that you are not trying to vandalize the wiki in some way; you just want to help.
- In conclusion: don't let the events of a single trivia discussion get you down about this wiki, or in general. Please.
