Unused links[edit]

Hi, I noticed you were removing a few red links from articles as "unused links", e.g. Seven Canthan Spears. Red links are (usually) actually a good thing for a number of reasons:

  1.  They help us spot where an article doesn't yet exist but should do – so if a topic gets enough red links it gets pushed to the top of Special:WantedPages.
  2. When the article finally is created we can check Special:WhatLinksHere to backfill any information from any sources that reference that page.
  3.  They encourage contribution – it reminds readers (who we should always think of as potential contributors) that there's always more to add to the wiki.

In general, red links help the wiki grow. They should really only be removed when they link to something that you're certain that the wiki shouldn't have a page for. Santax (talk · contribs) 11:34, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I'm removing only links to things that I'm sure do not deserve page, don't worry. If you look at those I removed, it was a name for elite guard of the long dead Canthan emperor, different name for Kryta, a name for a group of NPCs we do not group together and several move remnants. I don't think any of those deserve their page at all.
I understand that red links are helpful, but if Special:WantedPages is flooded with such unimportant things, the truly important will be lost among it all. DJemba (talk) 12:47, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

Vendor table row[edit]

Maybe you could try it in a sandbox first. I'm not sure if references are the best way to do it, as they are getting very lengthy and confusing, especially see Humble Stone.

Also you might want to take a look at Template talk:Vendor table row#Adding purchase notes and Template talk:Vendor table row#Items with purchasing restrictions. --Tolkyria (talk) 00:03, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Especially "I'm not a fan of storing arbitrary textual information such a notes. A majority of cases would be covered by identifying a page (such as an achievement) as the requirement." and "So this would be a requirement parameter and take any page [..]." However, the question is where to place it without getting too lenghty and provide a readable format. --Tolkyria (talk) 00:24, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
I must say I did not think this would need sandboxing, I really did not expect the SMW quirk.
I'd argue though that there are many items which have some kind of requirement which is not tied to any achievement, and I would really like to display it somewhere. References might not be the best, but I like them most among the options I know of. Of course, if there were anything better, I'd be all for it. DJemba (talk) 19:45, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
Note section directly in the table, like was previously on Humble Stone, looks much better and is much faster to convey info than a reference, imho. And as Tolkyria said, some npcs use references already for other links. ~Sime 19:58, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
What kind of requirements do we have? I'm aware of story, event, achievement, all tied to a page and a context. The only problem might be available after completing an achievement and available during an achievement collection, but the first one could be set via the general parameter "requirement" while the second via the parameter "collection" (it also has another text). The requirement text could be something like: "Requires completing the {{lc: {{#show: {{{requirement}}}|?Has context}} }} {{{requirement}}}."
Buy limits per day or total maximum should be another parameter, that probably could be squeezed next to the quantity (which is displayed right of the item name).
So overall, I'm not aware of any requirement that isn't connected to a page or a subobject. Examples of those would be appreciated.
Exactly Sime, it's getting awkward if a real link reference is required at the bottom and a vendor notes reference below the table. However, Humble Stone is a bad example due to almost all of the sold items have a requirement, making columns the obvious solution although it might not always be the case. What about NPCs selling e.g. 10-15 items and only one sold item has a requirement. So somehow a way to switch the display mode (specified in the header), extra column or a single line note (whereever we put it) would be nice.
But as I said above, examples of such NPCs are crucial to acutally get a feeling of what we need.
Passing the parameter directly to the result format with template = <template>{{!}}requirement={{{requirement|}}} avoids any complications with the default case. --Tolkyria (talk) 20:14, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
I mostly meant the time-based purchases, another requirement (although page) is mastery.
As I wanted to say, I don't really care how it looks, I care whether it exists and if it works. DJemba (talk) 20:19, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Wanted but not wanted[edit]

Great job on the wanted pages list. Also your edit to the talkpage of my watchlisted GW2WT:TECH reminded me to put some requests in for the extensions we want. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 21:33, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Deleted text[edit]

Why did you delete what I wrote for Set 1094 on Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Projects/On Wiki of Gold? Erianna (talk) 04:08, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Looks like edit conflict that I missed, sorry. I put it back now. DJemba (talk) 12:15, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
Okay, thank you! Erianna (talk) 04:59, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

Fixed my User Page[edit]

Thanks for fixing that copy/paste mistake I made on my user page. I was experimenting with trying to get the API box to appear for that achievement collection. I thought I should just be able to reference the original page by inclusion but that didn't work so I just copied the content. Didn't realize that a User space copy shouldn't have the id. If you could suggest how I can get this to work like I did on my main User:Robdalf/Aurora page I would be grateful. Robdalf (talk) 12:36, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

No problem, it's a small thing anyways; sometimes id is used in the backend queries and would make your page show on normal pages, which is why we don't set ids on pages like yours.
Unfortunately due to the way our templates are done, having API box in User namespace is only possible for collections/their items, not for achievement categories/achievements; and I don't think there is an easy way around it. DJemba (talk) 15:11, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

Dat icon removals[edit]

Hey, thanks for updating and moving files. If you're going to remove the links from the Dat icons page though can you just mark removals as minor edits, would really appreciate it --Dak393 (talk) 17:52, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
