Shocking Aura (effect)[edit]

since you deleted it, was there discussion on it? There hasn't been much on how we document effects, which I've taken the stance that we should document every effect.--Relyk ~ talk > 21:47, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Updates[edit]

Exactly what update are you referring to? :o poke | talk 10:31, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

Before ~today, the "other/additional reason" would auto-blank when a reason was selected from the dropdown above it. Earlier today (a few hours ago, by now) I noticed it stopped doing that. Not sure what would cause that to change, so I assume it was the wiki update stephane did? -Auron 10:45, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
Actually that feature was mine :P I added that to the global JS a long while before. But yeah, it broke with the update. Fixed it now, so it is working again :) poke | talk 11:04, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

Look at the few I left and do something with those, too. They were marked but still appear in lists of items that seem relevant. I don't play so I can't readily check where the items come from and if they still exist. -Auron 13:28, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Oops[edit]

D'you know, I was so certain I'd read somewhere that spam should be deleted when tagging, but I must have totally imagined it. — noobsicleUser Snograt signature.png 11:18, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

There's logic to doing it both ways tbh, if no sysop is active currently it's probably better to blank pages just to reduce potential traffic to spam sites. I'm just used to the gww/gw2w "standard" of letting sysops be lazy by keeping the spam on page so we don't have to go history diving (it's like dumpster diving, but with fewer surprises). -Auron 11:39, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
(And since you had no way to tell if sysops were around, you did fine I guess :p) -Auron 11:45, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
The funny thing is, even though I imagined the rule, I thought it was stupid, but blindly followed it anyway! Obviously, if it's in any way offensive, blank & tag is the way to go. This is related to why I'm no longer a mod on Guru, by the way - a former admin (eh?) noticed that all I ever did was permaban spammers, because I'm just too damn soft to chastise real people. But hell, I was a top-rate spammer slammer ^_^ — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 11:54, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

it was pretty good tbh! Went to maui ocean center and got to see sharks and turtles and huge ass manta rays being fed, got to poke and pick up some starfish and urchins. The camp itself was pretty good, a bit on the smaller side after some of the other camps I've been to but the facilities were all in working order and the staff was friendly. Some of the merit badges offered these days are great - robotics, space exploration with rocket launching, metal working, even game design. The kids in the troop had lots of fun, and we even sang Let It Go during the closing campfire (most of the audience sang along, too). Definitely an enjoyable week. And yes... I swam once. In a pool. For a swim test. Was too busy to go back in later on though :( -Auron 02:30, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

""It's clear that quite a lot of you would like to have greater flexibility in using the Currency Exchange. Our intention when we designed the new interface was to streamline large volume purchases, which make up the majority of transactions.

In light of your feedback, we will update the Currency Exchange so that you can decide how you want to use it. We will keep the new streamlined system and also offer a new "Custom" button on the panel that you can use to exchange any increment of gems or gold.

We anticipate rolling this out soon. Stay tuned!""

Haha, definitely a blast from the past. I'm alright. I think you knew that I was heavily involved with Boy Scouts for a long time, and I'm winding that down finally. There's a huge event coming up this summer (NOAC) that I'm staffing, and after that I'll be ceasing involvement with the program. Gotta move on and make time for me. I game when I can; I got a bitchin video card for my birthday, so I was able to mod the shit out of Skyrim (http://imgur.com/a/qxKgQ if you want some pics). Was playing Diablo 3 pretty heavily with friends for awhile with the new season, but that's wound down as well. How's you? -Auron 23:55, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
Yeah I knew about your involvement with the BSA. Honestly I don't know enough about Skyrim to begin to understand the difference between modded and un-modded. I played it on a console and didn't really like it so it didn't get much play time. I'm good too bro. high standards[edit]

"Stop trying to stir the pot by claiming personal attacks and harassment; just focus on the work, and Alex will do the same." Sorry, but that's completely missing the point and the wrong attitude to have. These are templates both Alex and I work on and have to collaborate on. Each user can't simply focus on his own work, that's not how wikis function. If Alex is only going to make harrassing edits (through reverts and no discussion), I can't do any work. The responses I've been getting are accusatory and feel like personal attacks rather than discussing the issues.

The attitude of the wiki, at least for veteran users, is people who break code are in the wrong. That's what I get from your response as well. I posted on his talk page multiple times about base ingredients so he could keep up with the work and had opportunity to ask questions or check for bugs. It's also a template we've discussed multiple times previously. The only response I got is after I made the changes. Dismissing his behavior as "high standards and frustration" doesn't help at all. I can also have high standards and get frustrated when things break, but that doesn't mean I revert war all the things and refuse to respond. That's the same logic as saying "no issue, relyk is being sensitive again lol".

I believe that attitude discourages new editors, creates a wall especially in templates, and makes changes take forever. It's a free pass to deny any and all changes to the templates. And I have to break templates sometimes, whether on purpose or not, because I am cleaning up code and parameters, changing functionality, can't devote the time to, it's too difficult to understand, or no one else is willing to. That's why the changes to the base ingredients template took a month. I depend on Alex, Ishmael, and other users to check my work and help fix errors.

I can't be fighting Alex on changes and don't want to. Your response is therefore frustrating. tl;dr Sorry for being hypersensitive.--Relyk ~ talk < 21:50, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

Your point that complicated templates create a learning curve for new users is absolutely correct; and that's precisely why we stayed away from them on GWW. That mindset was, unfortunately, abandoned on this wiki, and template proliferation became the law of the land. Now you basically have to know how to code to be able to contribute to some areas, and that's not how it should be. Sacrificing some template functionality to make them more accessible/maintainable by your average wiki-goer is a fair trade-off to make. If ANet wants to make some crazy API plug-ins, or a wiki-person wants to fiddle with it on their personal website, whatever... but the wiki is and has always been a community effort, and when we lock that community out, everyone loses. I'd love to abandon these over-complicated messes and go back to shit I could stand a chance of contributing to... but it always seemed like "the wiki" was fine with it, since it always came with extra functionality or whatever. If you're the only two that know how to code these things, and you're tired of fighting each other over it, why don't you spearhead the push back to more simple, community-maintainable templates? That way you can try to maintain the functionality you think we need to keep and strip away all the extraneous stuff.
Wikis, by their very nature, are limited in what they can track. PvX required a number of very messy extensions to function at all, and when they broke, the entire site became useless until we got them running. GW2W doesn't need to be like that, though; we can easily say "sorry, that kind of content doesn't work on mediawiki software" and let other sites do it. Instead we try to do more and more, for reasons I honestly can't comprehend. We're already the official wiki; why don't we focus on that and let other sites do that extra shit? Do we really need super fancy sorting and item recipe lookups when other sites do that just as well (or better)?
Back to the point, though, I think you misread a crucial part: I didn't say to focus on *your* work, I said to focus on *the* work. Like I told Konig all those months ago, we don't edit in a vacuum; working with the other editors is absolutely essential for a wiki project. It takes compromise. If you can't do as many changes as you'd like because it breaks templates, that's a sacrifice you'd make for the betterment of the wiki (or, in this case, its editors). The wiki isn't your personal playground to do with as you see fit. If you break things, it is expected that you take responsibility for them. I've banned users for making wide, sweeping and ultimately destructive changes that require a massive clean-up effort before (on GWW), because that kind of clean-up is a net drain on resources. Even though we technically "lost" that person's contributions, the wiki ended up ahead because the few editors we did have had to spend less time babysitting. I'm not threatening to ban you, I'm just asking you to look at your efforts objectively; if you're breaking templates often enough to frustrate the only other person working on templates, are you having a positive or negative effect? Could you focus on fewer changes, tweaking them and troubleshooting them to make sure nothing breaks (or to fix it if it does), instead of doing a multitude of changes that all break things?
Tying it all together, though, I think this entire situation has arisen from template over-proliferation. We're at a point where only a few remaining editors have a chance at making sense of our maze of templates, and the templates are (apparently) complicated enough that even those few still struggle. If it's become such an issue that you're both at each other's throats, could we take it down a notch? Stop attempting projects on a grand-enough scale that only Grand Masters of Wiki Coding have a chance to contribute to? At this point, the two of you can make that call. You can say "fuck this, I've had it, let's simplify this so other users can help." That's also a smart long-term move, if either (or both) of you quit playing and move on... if you took the time to uncomplicate the wiki's templates, maybe that'll help reduce your frustration, Alex's frustration, and ensure the wiki's longevity when you both are gone.
You shouldn't be "fighting" anyone on changes, but you also can't expect to have all of your changes uncontested. The art of wiki editing is that of compromise. Sometimes you have to give up on something you felt strongly about simply because the alternative is pissing everyone off - and that makes the project not really worth it. Sometimes you have to accept that your original vision will be changed, altered or even flat-out reverted. If it does get reverted, instead of getting defensive about it, try to figure out why, and what you can do to reach compromise with that person. Very often we think we're compromising, but we aren't really giving any ground, just pushing and pushing until the other person gives up and goes home. We can't afford that situation with how few skilled coders we have. If this mess simply isn't going to work, ask yourself what the wiki project would benefit from the most - simpler templates that are less of a hassle? One of the coders quitting to let the others do whatever they want? Saying fuck it and have everyone ragequit?
I don't have all the answers, but I do feel your pain. I hope you (and the other coders) can come to an agreement that will be of greatest benefit to the wiki's health and longevity. But if you and Alex are both this frustrated, my expert opinion is that we're doing something wrong and need to consider changing our path. -Auron 10:59, 10 March 2016 (UTC)
