Chat links[edit]

Hi, please stop adding these chat links to crafting material articles. They have absolutely no use on the wiki. Thanks. Felix Omni Signature.png 05:06, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

I'm just trying to help the community, sir. 68.108.59.74 05:08, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

I realize and appreciate that, but I don't see any reason to add these chat links to the wiki, especially since adding them to even one item would require adding them to every single item in the game. If you have a good reason for it, though, I'd be glad to discuss it. Maybe there's something I'm missing. Felix Omni Signature.png 05:12, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
If anything there should be a standalone article for them - a sortable table for different types of items with the item name and corresponding chat link. Putting them on the individual item pages is questionable, though. -Auron 05:14, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Good idea, Auron. 68.108.59.74 05:20, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
I could be on board with that, but I have to ask, 68.108- how are you generating these chat links? Are you finding them in-game somewhere? Felix Omni Signature.png 05:28, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Sorry for the late response; was doing Fractals. Use the /wiki command in-game and shift-click the item to /wiki the link. Your web browser opens with a search for that item in the GW2 Wiki, but it doesn't show the item name; instead, it shows the chat link. You can also visit http://streamchan.com/gw2id.html. 68.108.59.74 07:12, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Interesting! I wonder if this is somehow linked to the BWE items showing up on the trading post recently. Something I'm noticing that would make this extremely difficult to incorporate into the wiki, though- every stack amount of every variation of every item at every level has a unique chat link, so any list we make would either be extremely limited or absurdly massive. It would be cool to be able to copy+paste a chat link so that you can, for instance, preview a piece of equipment that you see on the trading post, but I'm not seeing any decent way to keep track of it all. Felix Omni Signature.png 11:04, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
There would be 250 unique links per stack of item. Multiply that with the amount of items that can stack up to that number, then add the non-stacking items' unique links, then add the links for everything non-item that can be chat-linked, well.. Everyone can see why we can't realistically incorporate them all. Maybe ArenaNet should do their part on these, instead of us. Make things easier, or something. - Infinite - talk 11:39, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Most people won't want the id code for a stack of 47 ore though - whatever the code is for 1 would suffice, and if we *really* wanted to go out of our way, the code for a full stack could be included as a bonus, but obviously we're not going to include every possible code for every size of every stack of stackable item. -Auron 12:06, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
It's not about wanting it, it's just that shift-clicking turns the current stack into a link (if it happens to be 47, it'd be the link for 47 ores of that type). ArenaNet should tweak the wiki command so that it translates that chat link of 47 ore into a wiki search command for a single ore. - Infinite - talk 12:14, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
So...can I create a sortable table in the Chat Link Format article page?...or are we still undecided on how to add chat links to the GW2 Wiki? I can contribute a shit ton of chat links to the wiki (as demonstrated on single article pages earlier). I was going to copy the sortable table code from the ascended stats table found on the Vial of Condensed Mists Essence page. 68.108.59.74 14:01, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Per Talk:Chat link format, I thought Poke was working on something to create the codes for us without manually adding them.. or did that die? Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 14:15, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

The data point that is useful for the wiki is the item ID. The chat link is an encoded format that incorporates the item ID, the stack count, attached upgrades, etc, etc. Chat links are not useful to the wiki, but if we had item IDs, we could generate them for people. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 15:07, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Is it possible to parse or extract-out the Item ID from a given chat link? 68.108.59.74 16:30, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
It seems to me that we could get every item's ID from the above linked site, [1], though that would be a pain in the butt. It would be smarter to figure out how it works. Felix Omni Signature.png 09:01, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Decoding a chat link is just the opposite of encoding it, we know the process, so yes, we can extract item IDs. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 13:22, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Chat links cont'd[edit]

What's the point of chat links on non-weapon/armor items? User Shimpchip Rodgort's Invocation.jpg Shimpchip talk 17:30, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

...comprehensiveness. 68.108.59.74 17:32, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
So... even though you've been asked to stop, you're still splattering the chat links around the wiki. Why? —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 18:45, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
It is information that should be available to all GW2 players. 68.108.59.74 22:38, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
So put it all on a single page like I mentioned earlier. We can work out the details later, but consensus is very obviously against putting chat link info on respective item pages, so continuing to do so can be construed as vandalism. -Auron 07:31, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Like I said above, chat links for gear would be cool for previews. But the tooltip created by a chat link for a Glob of Ectoplasm produces the exact same information that is already available on Glob of Ectoplasm. So I really can't see any reason for putting chat links on crafting material pages. Felix Omni Signature.png 08:55, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Stop spamming talk pages with chat links--Relyk 16:45, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Create an article page or data table where I can input the chat links, then. 68.108.59.74 16:52, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
User:Malacon/Sandbox/itemid.18k, we already have one. That page was linked two times already. It would be a good idea not to ignore it.--Relyk 21:00, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
Who is Malacon? ...and what is the link to the page with all the chat links? 68.108.59.74 00:14, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
You have been told multiple times to stop adding the chat links. Continue to do so and your editing rights will be temporarily revoked. --JonTheMon 14:20, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
You've been blocked for a day for vandalism. Repeated violations will result in longer bans. Keep item id's in a central location - like the page you've been linked to multiple times - and don't put them anywhere else, least of all article or article talk pages. -Auron 15:21, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
I've scanned this entire talk page, and I see only one link to page full of item IDs. I don't know why you guys keep saying the link has been shared multiple times when I only see one instance of a link, and it's not a link to chat links but to a page of item IDs. Where is the page with chat links?

Chat Links...[edit]

Hey I've been noticing your chat links on some of the rare crafting material pages. what are these and why are they there? 174.125.6.87 23:26, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
