Tetra Earthcall

From Guild Wars 2 Wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search

Tetra Earthcall is a Warden and the leader of the Speakers who commits acts of terrorism to preserve the Echovald Forest. She is very direct and says what is on her mind. She opposes the dragonjade technology and sees it as a threat to the world, making her the enemy of both the Empire of Cantha and the Jade Brotherhood. Although Tetra allows humans into the Speakers, she hates them for what they have done to the Echovald Wilds.[1]

Biography[edit]

Early years[edit]

Like all the wardens of the Echovald Forest, Tetra Earthcall's early life remains unknown and whether she originated among the first wardens or was possibly a later convert; she nevertheless claims to hold the power to turn mortals into immortal forest spirits and has promised to grant her most dedicated followers the honor of transforming them into wardens one day.[2] Her name, as well as the names of the other wardens supporting her cause in the present day, differ from the typical naming of historical wardens, however. The wardens that roamed in the Echovald centuries ago did not take names as such, but took their monikers from their rank in the clan's natural hierarchy: the lower ranks were associated with the smallest forms and shapes of nature, the higher ranks took their names from particular trees or larger forms of sea life, while the protectors leading the clans were named after the seasons themselves. There has been scholarly speculation about the mysterious wardens' origins and if they had once been human druids or holy men who had merged with the spirit they served—Dreslav who oversaw growth, and Urgoz who oversaw decay in the forest—to become something altogether different in order to protect the forest and maintain natural balance within it.[3][4]

Doireann has speculated that the origins of wardens and juggernautsKurzicks who were transformed into resilient plant creatures that would survive as long as the Forever Tree each respective juggernaut was bound to remained alive—could be similar with the method being slightly different as wardens would have supposedly been transformed by the forest spirit itself while Kurzicks had to sing magical Songs of Arboreum in the complex Awakening Ceremony to initiate the transformation. Female wardens were not seen assisting male Wardens in aggressively defending the Echovald Forest and attacking Kurzicks on their master Urgoz's orders during the time of Shiro Tagachi's return as a vengeful envoy in 1582 CC (1072 AE). When Tetra was asked about what female wardens had been doing in the past few centuries once she appeared in public, she refused to answer any inquiries even from her most trusted followers and threatened anyone asking her further questions with violence. High Speaker Jika has suggested that the female Wardens had been guarding a location of some great importance, hidden far away from mortal eyes.[3]

After Tetra had emerged from the deepest parts of the Echovald, she took over the Speakers who had been acting as environmental defenders of the forest and opposing any kind of technological progress. She and the wardens working alongside her such as Igne Mossheart quickly turned the Speakers more fanatical and weaponized their good intentions, ordering their ritualists to enslave ghosts and bombing anyone they disagreed with.[3] She convinced her followers that they would become "immortal forest spirits" like her if they carried out their duties to the forest without question.[2][5] Despite Tetra's extreme methods of protecting the forest, she too had her limits on how far she would go. Unlike the even more fanatical Igne who eagerly wanted violence for its own sake to punish all trespassers in the forest, Tetra's philosophy was to only use violence when there was no other way to resolve disputes.[6]

The mysterious and ancient Wardens guard the areas of Cantha hit hardest by Shiro's legacy. Protectors of the Echovald that was, they now guard the petrified forest it has become. They may once have been human, perhaps powerful druids or holy men, but they long ago merged with the spirit they served to become something altogether different.
Now they stand as the ultimate protectors of the Echovald that is. The clan claims the right of vengeance for what Shiro Tagachi wrought, and blames all humans for the Jade Wind that stripped the woods and sea of life, but inexplicably left the Wardens unharmed. Driven nearly mad, enraged at their failure to fulfill their only purpose, they work in their own mysterious ways to reverse the effects of Shiro’s death, but until they succeed, they will threaten any humans they encounter.
Wardens do not take names as such, but take their monikers from their rank in the clan’s natural hierarchy. The lowest ranked, least powerful Wardens are associated with the smallest forms and shapes of nature—leaves, moss, seashells, and so on. Higher up are those Wardens who take their name from particular trees or larger forms of sea life, while those protectors that lead the clans take the names of the seasons.
