Initial info source[edit]

Source of info. I haven't done it yet; I only discovered it today while surfing this wiki and discovered the Tears' article was missing. --Messenger 11:15, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I created the entry on the mini-dungeon page after I ran through it (the name is a guess based on the puzzle at the end, can't remember if there was an actual name on the map, need to go back), but unfortunately wasn't able to create the page. I really love these hidden mini-dungeons, and need to find more. The puzzle at the end was actually bugged when we went through, the tears on the left side of the face weren't showing up. The page you linked has the correct screenshots and it still works. The chest didn't appear for us (might also be bugged, but we think it may be linked to the Champion mob inside) so that might be why the tears were not there to prevent people from getting in. Tears don't work[edit]

Subj. I placed tears on the plates in the right order for about half an hour, had only then the first torch lit. But, I still can't lit the second and others - they just don't light. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Malgalad (talk • contribs).

All working now[edit]

Went in today, ran straight past all the Veterans and the Champion to the Tears themselves. After correctly positioning them all and getting all the torches to light, the door to the chest opens. Got a lv 14 Green and two other random drops. Magua 06:27, 28 October 2012 (PDT)

I tried it today and it was broken. Only the right side of face was showing, so I couldn't light left torch. I sent a bug report showing how the left side was missing. Maybe person before me messed up it, but I found no way to reset. BioMasterZap 17:40, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Tried it today on the server Henge of Denravi, still bugged for us. Only right side is showing and even when placed correctly the torch doesnt light. Reported it as a bug and gave them a screenshot, hopefully they fix it soon. Blackout15 10:50, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

If pattern doesn't work[edit]

I tried it today, all the patterns were shown on the face. Though when I tried for the last two torches it didn't want to light up. So I put all the tears on the left side close to the wall, then placed the tears correctly and it worked! The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pit047 (talk • contribs).

I did it today, first torch lit after I took all the tears off, then followed the pattern doing it all myself (someone else was there helping at first). second wouldn't light. I put tears on all the plates (after trying all the patterns), then removed some to make the pattern for the second, and it worked. not sure if it just reset everything because the last two worked fine. Torches already lit[edit]

Door closed, no combinations achieve anything. Well done. Guest to different server, 1 torch is lit, tried all combinations, nothing. When will the original content across the game that's bugged be fixed?124.191.60.179 15:24, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

No Rumble[edit]

The main page says the chamber rumbles a bit when placing the stones correctly. I don't really any really weird settings that I'm aware of (normal volume for things like sound effects, graphics), but if there is a rumble, it is pretty easy to miss it. Solvar 08:15, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Not confirmed[edit]

My experience was that i thought it was bugged when i got it and tried all combination on wiki, they didn't work...but than i removed all tears and it actually matched pattern :) one eye was no pattern, while other was shown. maybe if no pattern is displayed, it is actually a pattern. EVERYTHING EMPTY! also..you don't have to play all tears on stones. weight of your character is counted as well. i just carry tear to last stone i have to do and room trembles. you have yet to experience if you take enough people, maybe you can match pattern with players! --Ireth Tassartir 01:49, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Yeah. The wiki notes section here is a hurried, extremely ambiguous explanation. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 75.187.160.165 (talk).

Approach the Gate[edit]

I've just completed this and found the torches don't light until you place all the stones and then approach the gate. I still had to do it about 100 times though. Seems to work better if you remove all stones each time and start from a bare board. Selfea 02:40, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

shadow step through door[edit]

It is possible to shadow step through the door without even completing the puzzle. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Urvinespiegel (talk • contribs).

^Does not work

Clarification[edit]

where X is a stone and the top row is closest to the face I place tears on those "O", but none torch lightened.

Then I place tears on those "X", two of the torches lightened. It seems the "X" are the places for "tears".--TeaCat._. User RedTeaCat TeaCat.jpg 13:05, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

From scratch[edit]

After trying all of the above, this finally worked for me: take all the tears back to the west wall, start from scratch. After placing 3 out of 4 tears, the torch already went on. Definately a lot of bugs. The preceding unsigned comment was added by EsotericSurgery (talk • contribs).

Train? Champion?[edit]

Previous page stated "fight through", which is on the difficult side for a solo low-level character. Turns out you don't need to kill any hylek. You just have to make it to the puzzle. Edited page to reflect this and also a bit for brevity on the data statements. Added the champion to the list of enemies. I did see the champion when I trained past, but I didn't get his name or his subclass of hylek. Hopefully, someone else will remember and edit that data into the page. Not a "mini dungeon"[edit]

This is an open world area. Dungeons in GW2 are instances (that you have to travel to through a portal). --Alad (talk) 00:09, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Nah, mini dungeons are not instances, they are all open-world. The only reason for the portals is to give access to an unreachable locations. MalGalad 00:17, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
mini dungeon isn't defined well anywhere. a couple of wiki people took the term from various posts by anet devs, turned it into a term, and now we're stuck with arguments about it.
I don't think it helps people understand the mechanics because these have almost nothing in common with dungeons: dungeons allow only 5 people, they have special reward mechanics, including tokens, WPs are free, and so on. A better term would be sub-zone or mini-zone: each is contained within an actual zone and uses the same loading screen, there's no limit to the number of people, and the special task isn't more complex than reaching the end of certain JPs or vistas: kill this or that to release something that opens a gate that triggers a drop that is used to unlock a door.
But since anet uses the term from time to time in an undefined way, somehow it's made its way here and creates this type of confusion. 75.36.176.4 00:53, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
Hm... if you look at most things considered mini-dungeons:
  • They usually appear under the explorer category, not jumping puzzles, if they have an achievement at all.
  • They are often more combat-oriented, they often have one champion or some veterans protecting a chest.
  • They always have at least two distinct rooms or differentiated areas. They are never a single room or single open area.
  • They often have scripted events with no 'event circles' to guide you.
For some reason the "mini-dungeon" article describes jumping puzzles as a type of mini-dungeons. I find that to be untrue. Many jumping puzzles are not dungeon-like. Some jumping puzzles, though, could be seen as mini-dungeons. So a certain location being a mini-dungeon and a jumping puzzle can be seen as two separate things. A jumping puzzle that has differentiated rooms and requires combat could also be a mini-dungeon, and a mini-dungeon that requires a few well times jumps would also be a jumping puzzle.
In this particular case, all combat is avoidable. But it's still filled with enemies, and it has a champion, and 2 separate rooms (long passage and the treasure room), and three differentiated locations (the entrance, the spot with the champion and the chamber with the tears) in the middle of the first rooms and the last room involves a scripted puzzle and no jumps at all. So you can say it's a mini-dungeon. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 00:59, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Guess and check[edit]

Somebody abandoned a bugged tears run with 3 torches lit. I went through and did all of the patterns and it finally let me through. Sometimes the pattern on the cheek is not the pattern that's needed. -Ilij The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ilij (talk) at 22:49, 16 July 2013‎ (UTC).

Can't see patterns[edit]

If you can't see the pattern at all try using the video settings preset for "best performance". Tonight I was unable to see the pattern on the right side on any other setting. Its strips most of the detail off the face, but the pattern did become visible. SeaGlass (talk) 03:52, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

Feedback 2019/10/25[edit]

Was in an instance of the map where someone decided to throw all the tears past the door. Would be nice to know on the wiki if there is known infomation on how long it takes for the tears to reset their position and that it can be impossoble to complete. Feedback 2020/11/26[edit]

You might want to add to the 'Related Achievements' section the collection 'Ryland Steelcatcher's Footsteps' to the list. There's an item found in the final chest (Distilled Hylek Mead) that adds to that collection --142.165.85.1 04:51, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, added the achievement. —Kvothe (talk) 12:03, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
