Mursaat anagram[edit]

It belongs in Trivia, not Notes, as Rata Sum being an anagram of Mursaat is trivial, and as of yet does not actually affect gameplay in any way. Silavor User Silavor Sig Icon.png 13:06, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

since rata sum actually means something in latin, shouldn't mursaat be the anagram? Getefix 16:32, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Nope, since Mursaat was in GW long before Rata Sum was. Therefore it's more likely they looked for an anagram of mursaat that had a meaning. -Alarielle- 16:39, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Latin translation[edit]

"Reri" is deponent verb and thus what would be perfect passive indicative is literally translated as perfect active indicative. If one would want an even more literal translation, he would have to go with something along the lines of "I am having thought" (nonsense I believe). It is also possible to regard "rata" as an adjective, in which case the translation would be along the lines of "I am established". Regarding the meaning of the words a search using internet dictionaries lead me to believe "reri" translates to "to think", "to deem" or "to believe" and "ratus" to "fixed", "certain" or "established". This makes me wonder where the translation of "to ratify" for "reri" or "ratified" for "ratus" is taken from (though the latter is somehow near to established). "I have thought" and "I am certain" would be more accurate translations, if the online dictionaries were not mistaken. As I haven't got proper dictionaries to check at the moment, though, I won't change the note for now. Bernado 23:41, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Flying[edit]

Source that Rata Sum is flying: [2] Glastium 00:11, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

You're not flying. You're on a wire! Cookie for those who get this. Nice find Glastium. :) - Infinite - talk 12:45, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
"The asura's [city] is a giant floating cube in the sky" is what Colin says. pling User Pling sig.png 13:54, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
Flying, floating, they are somewhat interchangeable. (Though politically correct it should be floating, as there are no wings to fly with.) - Infinite - talk 13:57, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
I know, I was just quoting the actual line :) pling User Pling sig.png 14:05, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
Oh lol, didn't realise it was already quoted on the page... pling User Pling sig.png 14:10, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
only part of it is floating, some of it is on 'ground floor' maybe a developped version of the ruins we saw in gw1, ill try and find the page in EoD Getefix 19:58, 23 April 2011 (UTC) EDIT found it p44 just before the last paragraph, "i live in the old city - down below" Getefix 20:04, 23 April 2011 (UTC)
RE: Infinite's comment "there are no wings to fly with", doesn't mean an object can't fly without wings, you wouldn't consider rockets to be floating. And by the way, what does PC have to do with something flying or floating? 69.183.17.93 06:21, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Flying is to move in the atmosphere. Floating is just buoyancy within a fluid. So, unless it can move around like flying ships, it's just floating like a balloon that doesn't move or a cork on water. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 17:28, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Capital/capitol[edit]

re this edit. "Capital" and "capitol" have different meanings (but sometimes people, Americans usually, use "capitol" erroneously when they actually mean "capital"). ArenaNet seems to be using "capitol" for Rata Sum, but I'm not sure whether that's intentional. pling User Pling sig.png 19:55, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

according to ( http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/capitol ) "capital (the city in which the capitol is located)" "The capitol building is located smack-dab in the middle of the state capital." So it depends if Rata sum is a building or a city.JnewUser Jnew Tormented Scythe.png 19:59, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
I wasn't sure whether to classify Rata Sum as a gigantic building with various wings and floors, or as the asuran take on an actual city in Guild Wars 2 (contrary to Rata Sum in the original GW, where it is a plaza). In the end, I left the word untouched when editing the link, because of this question. - Infinite - talk 20:53, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
A capitol is specifically a government/legislative building located in a capital city. For instance - the parliament building, or the congress building in Washington (US Capitol), are "capitol" buildings. In that sense, the word capital should be the correct term for Rata Sum, since it's not exclusively used for legislative purposes. --Xu Davella 01:28, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
I thought capitol wasn't necessarily incorrect (that is, in spelling), I just couldn't recall what it was and was too lazy to dictionary it. Regarding which is "right" - capital is correct in a mechanical sense, and based off of interviews as well. ANet, and the game, considers it a city, not a single building. However... It can also be called a single building since it is one big ass cube in the air. But as Xu said, it isn't solely a government building so I'd argue capital is correct. Though ANet may just decide to use the two interchangably with Rata Sum. Konig/talk 03:26, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
Can it be a city and a building at the same time? There is nothing I have ever heard saying a city cant be just one massive building. In which case it can be both? JnewUser Jnew Tormented Scythe.png 10:03, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
its a city - check the post about it flying and look at my comment at the bottom Getefix 17:44, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

ugly piece of junk[edit]

Why they scrapped the mursaat for this is far beyond my understanding. --Boro 10px‎ 10:14, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Troll elsewhere. (P.S. the mursaat were gone since the end of Prophecies - it was genocide from day 1). Konig/talk 16:43, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
ArenaNet has "some really cool plans" for the mursaat in Guild Wars 2..... theres 1 left remember Getefix 17:43, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
I meant as a population - there were, at least, 8 survivors of Prophecies. They were already made out to be villains and had a monumental population decrease - the former makes them tough to turn into a playable race (got to make a way to ally them to former enemies - e.g., humans) while the latter makes it impossible. 1 survivor doesn't make a playable race. And while he doesn't mention such here, Boro wants to play as a mursaat rather than asura (who doesn't). Konig/talk 19:06, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
I do for one Konig. The the Asura are a bunch of confident, arrogant, unstoppable genii. Who are 4 feet tall. What's not to love? Also, Boro, I can understand preference of races, but why must you call the art teams hard work an ugly piece of junk? Its rather rude, seeing as they've all worked very hard these past few years.--Indigo121 03:40, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
I was being a bit sarcastic in those final two words. Konig/talk 16:00, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, I can never tell your tone Konig lol --Indigo121 04:01, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Bloodstones link[edit]

Has anyone noticed that from above, Rata Sum looks an awful lot like some of the symbols we've seen on the bloodstones in GW1? I actually have an overarching theory about this that relates the Six Gods, the gift of magic and its subsequent sequestration, and Kerrsh's discoveries regarding the relationship/interconnection among and between the Six and how they fit into the Eternal Alchemy, but a lot of it is circumstantial, so I won't get into the details unless someone asks... --x 16:18, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

I don't see the similarity with the mursaat-made (well, supposedly) runes on the bloodstones. Konig/talk 07:44, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Npcs[edit]

I have been running around grabbing all the npcs and names of waypoints and dialog and goods and poi for a good few hours ill post them as soon as the bwe3 is over.- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 00:28, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

A (well alot more than one) day late and a dollar short. When were you going to post it? 69.182.135.189 04:52, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
I got the NPC section started and tagged a couple of spots that used improper punctuation, but matching in game usage. 69.183.17.93 06:16, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Polymock Arenas[edit]

I found a way into Polymock Arenas. Posted an image in the gallery on the Rata Sum page. Access to the Polymock Arenas during BWE3 requires map exploitation. God Of Fissures 22:46, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

cant scroll up?[edit]

oh ok i didn't realize that you didn't have a scroll wheel on your mouse to scroll up and find the link i also didn't realize that we changed how we link ON EVERY PAGE on the wiki its one link and then we don't link again or is it link everything everywhere?- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 20:08, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

I think this practice could take a different course. Like considering tables as their own "article" when it comes to "only link once" rule. IDK, but those links beside the juvenile animals are super convenient and there's too many to count similiar sections all over the wiki. So what's it gonna be? Mediggo 20:37, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
The meta-rule that most wikis go by has always been "one link per section", never only once per article. Unless the article is composed of very short sections, of course. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 20:43, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
I must have been sleeping for years to miss out on that, then. Mediggo 20:45, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
maybe in bizarro world that's the meta-rule but the rule we (this wiki and gw1wiki) have always gone by is is one link per article. also if you are really looking for pets you are going to go to the pet article not random city articles. which we link to already. it should follow the rule that we have for all of the wiki imho.- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 22:21, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
"also if you are really looking for pets you are going to go to the pet article not random city articles." Okay, you do that for one pet, say a Juvenile Siamoth, and find you can get it in Rata Sum. Then you think, "As long as I'm in Rata Sum, what other pets can I get there?" So you come here and find that you can get both a pink moa and a red jellyfish. Ding, 3 pets at once.
As for the one-link-per-page rule, that's a dumb rule because it doesn't account for context at all. It makes sense for short articles, sure: if you can see the whole thing on a single screen there's absolutely no reason to link anything more than once. But on long articles or articles with giant tables like this one, it's a horrible inconvenience for readers. As in the example above, I come here and use the TOC to navigate straight to the Pets section. Not linking the areas in this section forces me to scroll back up and scan through a giant table for the link I need. Linking the areas here lets me go straight where I want to. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 22:58, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
Then we need to add pet by location to the pet page. Simple as that (which we have on gw1w).
Then it needs to be changed across all of the wiki. because currently everyone is following the one link per page rule which is even how its done in this very article for Asura.- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 23:16, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
On GWW, the rule was more or less "link once per page unless otherwise deemed reasonable" - said "deemed reasonable" almost always meant "except for tables (where no-link would look out of place, odd, and/or confusion compared to two links on the article)" outside some very very very (read: almost non-existent) exceptions to that exception. I had always assumed such carried onto GW2W. Konig/talk 23:28, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
That's what I've thought, too, but I don't think it's very clearly stated anywhere, and that could be rectified. Mediggo 06:13, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
Well, I never played GW1 and I never browsed the wiki there. The one link per page thing totally escapted me. I realized that it is not good to cluster everything with links like in TV tropes. But I usually set more than one link, when I think it is appropiate. Did we wrote this consensus down anywhere in this wiki, because as I said it totally escaped me? - Yandere Talk to me... 06:52, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
When I first read this conversation (just Zesbeer's opening comment at the time) I didn't have a clue what he was talking about - so I unlinked the three wikified instances of Rata Sum in the very first paragraph ^_^ — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 13:36, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

People have been using this argument to excuse a ton of BS in the wiki for GW and now it appears that they are trying to use the same pile of BS here. The user shouldn't have to go searching all over hell and back to find information that you would think could possibly be in more than one spot, instead of forcing the user to have to navigate to only one location. Having information such as what types of mobs and NPCs has been in the wiki on GW, and I actually came here to see what was listed in that area, and no luck. If you want to use the usual excuse, then since it is there in the wiki on GW, why isn't something like that here? 69.182.135.189 04:50, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

the information is still there? also this:List_of_pet_locations- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 04:52, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

How to get thrown in jail[edit]

You will need:
1. A revive orb
2. A death wish
3. Good aim
Start by jumping off the edge of Rata Sum to the left of the Polymock Arenas inactive gate. For the entire slide down, hold the left strafe key. You should slide all the way off the city, and be in midair before you take any fall damage, though it will be fatal. when you finally hit the ground below, you'll take something on the order of 8,810,000 fall damage. They should have an achievement for that, but whatever. This is where you want to use your revive orb. Once you've been revived, feel free to explore around the base of the city and the surrounding jungle. I rather regret not using the opportunity to go check out the Polymock Arenas, but I'm not even sure if I could have reached them. In any case, once you're done looking around, swim around to the dam just northwest of the Incubation Waypoint. By using the hill to the west, you can actually climb on top of it. If you try walking off the north edge to go back to the water, you'll get a loading screen, and find yourself in the Peacemakers' Headquarters, in a nice, empty containment cell.

Enjoy! --x 10:59, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Well done - that's a proper explorers' spirit right there! That cell instance must be there for a reason, I wonder how it's triggered "properly" — snogratUser Snograt signature.png 13:28, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
It's not actually an instance; you just appear in the prison cell in the persistent world, and the only way out is via waypoint. I also discovered that the midair falling damage actually damages your armor as if you had died in combat. I believe the combination of the two is to discourage exploration outside the city proper. And I did finally manage to get to the Polymock arenas with further exploration :P --x 03:06, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
I can confirm that you do get thrown in jail. if you go down there i got stuck down there and loged out and then logged back in in jail.- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 04:12, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
There are other spots, too. I confirmed this with another person who happened to have a Revive Orb: [[:File:RataSumJailSpot.jpg|right around here]]. It does seem to have a very small applicable area, though. Donlik 05:17, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Proper method to escape vista near Auxiliary waypoint?[edit]

I could not see a way off the hanging roots, and trying to go anywhere results in a fatal fall. What is the path to get back on safe ground? 76.253.0.17 07:39, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

waypoint?- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 07:42, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Inspiration?[edit]

Does this place remind anyone of Vivec from Morrowind? I feel that the steep outer walls do so for me espeically. 99.155.20.63 06:55, 12 April 2013 (UTC)Lex

If I am not mistaken the Inspiration was from the aztecs because when they were going to make gw1:utopia the hole inspiration was south America and Aztec, and Mayan architecture.- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 08:06, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Bottom of Rata Sum[edit]

It is not necessary to use a revive orb in order to reach the Bottom of Rata Sum. Yseron - 90.29.181.214 00:55, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

Bug?[edit]

Recently there has been a misplaced texture near the Metrica gate in Rata Sum. It looks like it comes from the deadly bottom of Magus Falls, with twisting tree-like features. It has remained there thru at least two Updates in my experience. Could it be portentous? --Gold Recluse (talk) 07:08, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Yeah I get that too, the texture floats a few feet off the ground? It popped up within the last few weeks - reported it too? -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 08:43, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Feedback 2016/06/20[edit]

The number of POIs given is incorrect. The article lists 19 which is correct, but in the summary box in the top right it says 17. The number on https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Map_completion/table is also incorrect at 17 --Koru (talk) 10:37, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

Maps[edit]

I've added all the city maps to the various articles. For the areas within the central cube, I've chosen to truncate the maps to the cube itself, otherwise the locator maps become far too small. Likewise with the city maps on this article. There's no additional detail provided to the complete city map at the various levels, it's all the same. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 14:49, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

The new maps[edit]

I'm kinda disappointed with those new delimited maps, because I used to love the ancient ones without any area border in white lines. Can someone add please, to the corresponding layer / location page a version of the original map (not outlined at all, natural) or if those exist, where are they? --Inquest Overseer Ezrielia (talk) 17:10, 23 February 2019 (UTC)

Click on any of the current versions with the borders; I always upload a clean version prior to the one with borders - click on the old revision thumbnails to bring them up. Feel free to download that clean version and upload in your userspace. --Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:52, 23 February 2019 (UTC)
