Usefulness[edit]

Aren't those rewards already listed in the respective story chapter articles? – Valento msg 18:57, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

They are, but there's no unified list. I actually needed to see a list of all the story rewards myself earlier today, which is what sparked me to make it. I'm sure there are others out there that would find it useful. By all means, if there's a legitimate reason not to have this page, we can remove it. I just know I'd find it useful, and I think others would too, so I don't see the harm in having it. Daft inquisitor (talk) 23:24, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
Nothing wrong with having this page. We'd want to generate this entire page with DPL/SMW instead of adding the content manually. I'm not sure that's needed if we design it correctly. Listing all the personal story instances seems unnecessary as the reward only cares about stage and step. The storyline templates like {{human storyline}} are much better for showing where you are at for a given stage and step. The only information we need to show is the stage, step, experience, coin, and set of items received in a giant table. Not feasible at the moment since we haven't semanticized the rewards.--Relyk ~ talk < 00:22, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
I wish we'd had a full version of this around when I'd been leveling my warrior... I was always picking options which meant I was replacing my armor 5 minutes later :p so I support the idea...
In terms of what we can do with DPL... I've been using this to update the templates, but DPL can't figure out optional choices (race/organization).
And I'm fairly certain the XP reward is a percentage of level rather than a fixed amount - so basically every rewards template is wrong apart from the 80s.. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 07:55, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
As for listing the personal story instances, I really didn't know how else to do it. There's no real standardized way of just saying, "The second instance of the third section of the personal story", or however you would put it (though I do know they're numbered and such in the Story Rewards Template index). I thought it would be wise to add the instance name just for a point of reference, but again, if it's legitimately unnecessary, I have no problem with removing it. :)
I'm not to hot on the terminology around here, so I'm not quite sure what Relyk means by "generate the page with DPL/SMW", but I'll do some digging around about it. Time to enlighten myself! Daft inquisitor (talk) 18:00, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
Basically we annotate most pages with certain facts so that we can use them as database entries, e.g. Commando's Hauberk has Special:Browse/Commando's Hauberk. With SemanticMediawiki (GW2W:SMW) we can do some lookups to find entries with certain facts (we call these properties)
I'm having a look at the pages we have in Category:Personal story rewards at the moment and trying to figure out which ones need updating. list of all items using SMW -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:22, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
If we want a correct implementation, we can finish the story infobox revamp. That adds the stage, I don't think I've added the step parameter. Alex already finished the nav templates for the Story Journal afaik. Then have the reward template generate the experience and coin based of the stage, step, and level from the infobox information in the same style as event rewards. The experience is based of the story level, not percentage-based (which is why a common suggestion is to do personal storyline asap). The reward template can be simplified to only a parameter for each profession. Repeating the same item for profession classes is worth removing the extra parameters. The person storyline reward subobject would have that information and then we can present it how we like. We can do extra processing to collapse down to profession classes with templates.--Relyk ~ talk < 18:39, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
Adding the step number + stage/chapter number to the infobox would be a good start yes. (I assume where we have A or B choices the step+chapter numbers would be the same)
Personally, I'd like to be able to get the acquisition (i.e. chapter + step numbers) from the personal story infobox so I can have them in a column at the end of the table I'm using in the sandbox.
== Part I — Level 10 ==
{{personal story rewards | level = 10}}
== Part II — Level 20 ==
{{personal story rewards | level = 20}}
...
where the new template would show A) item name, B) item type (+weight), C) item prefix, D) which story steps contribute [that would be the hard bit to acquire]. If we did it like that then we'd unfortunately lose the "bags of loot" + other items which the current setup has. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:53, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
Wow, a lot of this stuff is going over my head (I'm not super familiar with the wiki backend stuff). I'm going to take a step back and try to wrap my head around it before going any further, because it sounds like some of the stuff I was working on could be automated a bit better with some template reworks (at least, I think thats what you guys are saying). Then again, I might just finish the page with the format I'm doing now, and then clean it up and make it look better / reference easier afterwards.
Thanks for all the info guys, this is actually letting me see some parts of the wiki I never knew there were. Very cool. Daft inquisitor (talk) 19:30, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Usefulness (2)[edit]

So it's 2017, this page didn't see any real edits for 2 years. I've automated it but I think it's largely still useless. Should we delete it? -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 18:44, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

But, your most recent edit was so beautiful! I'm not sure how useful this page is. The only time I've cared about rewards is when I wanted to know the rare skins that I might be able to unlock via certain professions/paths, and I think it would be beyond the scope of this page to try to show that as well. If this is now (mostly) automated, any harm in keeping it around? G R E E N E R 18:56, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
I could see the page being turned into a redirect to personal story, with a general blurb as to the general rewards and notating the special stuff there, as to be honest other than the Black Lion key, I'd guess most people don't care about personal story rewards as the rest of it isn't really anything to write home about/junk. - Doodleplex 21:47, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
Gonna continue to add on to this. Most story steps are pretty much Bag of Loot (container), occasionally a choice between 3 different pieces of equipment: either a piece of armor, weapon or item upgrade(like a jewel or something) and usually some Experience. The "conclusion" of a story line usually gets the slightly more interesting things like spirit shards, a piece of orders armor or cultural armor, etc. As a result I'm still a fan of my original idea, mostly because while this page could be summarized up with what I've found, I can't think of a category that it would fit. - Doodleplex 23:09, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
Agree it is somehow useless, but I tend to like useless pages. :P Been working on story item and story characters articles for quite some time. :D
It's cool to have the info you might be looking for in just a single place, so you don't have to go across multiple pages just to figure out what chapter rewards what item.
Not mandatory for someone with an old account (most wardrobe items already unlocked) nor for brand new newbies (so much to do, unlocking one skin or another shouldn't be their top priority), but I find it useful for those 'still under progress achievement'ers and when planning what to do with alt-accounts. :) --NIN37 19:42, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
