Talk:Magnetite Shard
Cap change[edit]
This occurred in an update 2 weeks after raids were released. 128.250.0.70 01:30, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- I believe it was only the drop rate that changed, not the cap. If someone can confirm the opposite, please do (with some proof would be great) -Darqam (talk) 03:35, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- Edit: I realize now I was assuming a change from the 100 shard cap. My thought is it is still 100 shard cap, not less or more. -Darqam (talk)
Boss fail shards[edit]
Alright so I do not have 100% certainty with this so I will leave it in the talk page until I can confirm. I *believe* that you get 1 shard for getting the boss to 66% health, 2 shards for below 33%, and 3 shards for very low (maybe sub 5%?). I'll try and pay closer attention on some attempts to confirm this. -Darqam (talk) 15:59, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
Incorrect values on Spirit Woods[edit]
I believe the values are wrong on the spirit wood acquisition page. Currently the page says you get 2 for "part 1" and 1 for "part 2." The spirit woods are actually divided in to 3 separate events: closing the portals, outrunning the spirit wall, and stepping on the switches, all of which grant spirit shards. In my run today, they came out to 2/3/2 rewarded at each part, but that might have been off due to my active map rewards bonus. I'll test without the bonus to get an exact number, but until then, just wanted to point out that the info is incorrect. 75.114.190.38 05:53, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- Hum, I wrote those values by observing one of my runs. I might have been incorrect. I'll try recording my next go at it and look back on it to be sure I didn't dismiss a pop-up chest without paying attention. For now I will update to 2/3/2; thank you. -Darqam (talk) 15:27, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
Updated values with the 26th of Jan 2016 patch[edit]
I believe the values got increased significantly with the patch. Running map bonus, I think I got 15 from Gorseval and 25 from Sabetha; map bonus usually only gives 1-2 more per so I think the base values have been increased if someone can re-record the values. I'm not sure if map bonus still works here either. Seylan (talk) 02:16, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
- I'll be running through it this week without a map booster. Oddly enough, to me those numbers look like they are not influenced by the map booster, maybe it was 'fixed'? With a map booster how much do you get from VG, without one you get 10. Either way I'll put the numbers up ASAP. -Darqam (talk) 21:46, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
Feedback 2016/02/14[edit]
The number of Magnetite Shards awarded for completing events and boss kills is affected by Map Bonus Rate Increase Increase obtained from the Guild Tavern, increasing the rate of acquisition. It is unknown whether this is intended.
This is most certainly intended. See, the one and only source of Magnetite Shards is the map reward bonus system. Every shard you get in the raid comes from it. There are no fixed loot table which describe how many Shards you get for each boss kill/wipe/event. Boss kills, wipes and events award progress to your hidden map reward progressbar. For example, killing Vale Guardian does not, in fact, reward you with 10 Shards, but instead it rewards you with 1000% map reward progress, thus translating into 10 Shards.
Proof #1: When you gain Shards they aren't displayed as a single item in stacks of 10/15/25/whatever, but rather as 10/15/25 separate items. This is because you really get 1 Shard multiple times. This is in line with how map bonus rewards are dispensed in regular Tyria maps.
Proof #2: When you complete an event that yields a bouncy chest, all Shards are grouped together into a single extra slot inside the bouncy chest. This is in line with how World Bosses chests work with map rewards - you always get that extra loot slot in the chest, because World Boss events award 100% or more bonus reward progress.
And this is exactly where the Map Bonus Rate Increase comes into play: with it, you essentially get, for example, 1070% progress for Vale Guardian kill instead, given that you have a 7% map reward bonus boost. Now, it will not reward you with an extra Shard by itself, but if you happen to have 30% or more progress already accumulated on your invisible progressbar - yup, you will gain an extra Shard from that. This is why players in the same raid can receive different number of shard for each kill/wipe/event - they started with different amount of progress already on their account, leftovers from previous attempt or raid. So players can rest assured that their progress is never in vain: even if they don't receive as many shards as some other raid members, even if they have the boost on but don't receive their extra shards - nothing is lost, all your progress with boosts included is accumulated on that hidden progressbar, and you will eventually receive your rewards.
Bottom line: Map Bonus Rate Increase doesn't affect the number of shards you receive directly, but rather affects you in the long run: over time you will get more Shards, exactly as much more as the boost you have applied. If your other raid members get 1000 shards after 10 weeks of raiding without the boost, you would've gotten, say, 1080 by then with 8% boost.

How does the partial reward for failed attempts work for non-boss encounters like Escort?[edit]
Exactly how far do you have to get into the Escort encounter to gain 1 Magnetite Shard for example? --175.141.202.51 21:50, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
