Former name at beginning of article

It's common convention on Wikipedia articles that former and alternative names are bolded in the first sentence of the article. (See basically any wiki article, but here's one about another transgender person who changed her name. I think this is a reasonable practice to adopt. People who might be searching for Leif Chappelle would get redirected here, and this way they can see most easily that this article for Lena is about the same person. While it may be a common convention on Wikipedia, it is not absolute; Laverne Cox's article doesn't include her previous name. In regards to Lena, I'm now thinking that mentioning her previous name is not needed at all. As you said, anyone who searches for her previous name is redirected here where it states that she is transgender, and I think that they could connect the dots. I don't presume to speak for Lena or any trans person, but it is my understanding that most trans people would prefer to only be referenced by their new name, if possible, and I think it *is* possible in this case. When I checked Lena's linked personal website, I didn't see any mention of her previous name. (Note: I'm not suggesting that anyone contact Lena directly and ask her to weigh in on this; if she finds her way to this article on her own and makes changes, great, but I don't think we need to bother her otherwise.) --Cali (talk) 23:05, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

I agree with Cali. There was an interview from a few months ago with Lena in which she talked about her transition, and how quickly the information was changed on the wiki to match with her current life. She called her former name a dead name, which is precisely the reason I don't think it'd be necessary or warranted to display it here. Philosophically, I don't feel that the wiki should generally be beholden to someone's personal brand/identity management. The wiki is a knowledge base, and people come here when they are looking up information. Leaving out relevant, useful information and requiring users to "connect the dots" is not consistent with this philosophy. However, I admit that I don't relate to her experiences and don't really know the kind of emotional impact this makes. If you all agree that leaving the name out represents a basic level of respect and decency, then /shrug. - Veron (talk) 08:39, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

I don't think there's much harm in mentioning her old name so long as:

1. She's publically out and we're mentioning her trans status here anyway. The trans 101 article above is saying that you should avoid mentioning dead names if doing so will out someone against their will, and/or because it's rude to bring up in casual conversation. That's not relevant here: we're already outing her, and, like Veron said, the wiki is a knowledge base. I don't feel that the interview makes it clear that she doesn't want her dead name mentioned at all—just that it's very definitely not her name anymore, so we shouldn't act like it is. Which brings me to my second point...
2. It's made explicitly clear in the article that the old name is only being mentioned for clarification purposes. I would place it at the bottom of the page and word it as "players may be familiar with her work through her previous name [dead name]", as opposed to placing it at the top and wording it "formerly known as [dead name]".

All that said, I'm in no hurry to see it added back to the article. It's not like it takes a huge amount of mental effort to make the connection between the two names. --Idris (talk) 08:28, 3 March 2016 (UTC)
