Talk:Gallery of staves
Shaman's Norn Staff is not appearing in this gallery. Does something else need to be done? I just made the page for it a few hours ago. Shimpchip 05:03, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
- The DPL for these galleries has
allowcachedresults=true
, which means the output will only refresh when MediaWiki refreshes its cached version of the page (which normally happens once every 24 hours). You can do this by clicking the clock in the userbar at the top of the site. The norn staff is now displaying, so apparently the page has been re-cached since your comment. —Dr Ishmael 13:38, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
On Back or In Hand[edit]
Most of the images of staffs show them sheathed on someone's back, while some are just a thin image of the staff in someone's hand. For long thin weapons like staffs (as well as spears and tridents) having them in hand allows the image to be cropped more tightly around the weapon. However this makes them inconsistent with other galleries where the weapons are shown on people's backs (i.e. greatsword, hammer, etc.). It also can be confusing because some skins have different effects when they are sheathed or drawn. Is there a preference on how certain weapons should be shown? It may depend on the weapon type, but I think we should at least strive for some consistency. Meridin talk 09:19, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- Personally, I'm a fan of consistency, and so while we'd be able to crop the images closer if they were in hand, I think having them on the back would mesh better with all of the other weapon types. But that's at least my take on the subject. —Jyavoc 10:09, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- The problem with GW2 is that the weapon effects only display when the weapon is in the character's hand rather than on the back. Until ANet fixes the problem, it would be better to have the staves shown unsheathed. Whenever ANet fixes this I think the preview window would also show effects, allowing us to gather a lot more pictures (although screenshots of weapon previews tend to show up as lower quality and smaller sized than in-game graphics). Shimpchip talk 11:34, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
- What I would do for weapons that have different effects when they are drawn is to just upload two images: one on your back and one in your hand (maybe as a close up showing more detail). I think it would be good to show people that they differ depending on how they are being used. And then for gallery consistency, the one on the back showing the whole weapon would be the image that goes into galleries. That way we can show the effects and have consistent images. - Most people are going to want to see the full effects on the weapon. Having a second image of the weapon sheathed isn't going to provide any additional value, in my opinion. —Dr Ishmael 15:52, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
- So, from what I understand, weapons that have effects when drawn should be shown drawn (in hand), and weapons that don't should be shown sheathed (on back). That way most of the images are consistent, but the ones that aren't will be showing special effects. Correct me if I'm wrong in that conclusion (e.g. maybe we want to try to have them all shown drawn). Meridin talk 20:44, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
So, did any of us reach a consensus on this issue, or are we just going to continue doing whatever? Deciding on this now before the galleries have all their images will probably save us time down the road if we have to go back and fix things. Meridin talk 01:49, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
- I think that having a screenshot of the actual staff being held by the character is most relevant. This is because anyone can go to GW2DB and find the in-game chat codes and preview the staff on their backs. But many of them have effects that only activate when held (which I think is appropriate. imagine a flaming staff that's flaming... on your back? looks weird). --Kristofferus 17:55, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
- Or even a flaming book that's flaming on your back. >.> You're right, that's just weird. :P —Dr Ishmael 19:05, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
Feedback 2018/01/02[edit]
Please include a photo of the "Gnarled Walking Staff"; I noticed that it is missing. I have a photo but don't know how to upload it properly.
