Should it be investigated if english names require a space or not? - Lucian User Lucian.png 23:42, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Two word names weren't a requirement in the demo. I saw several demo players creating characters with single word names. -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 23:48, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
one word names would be awesome XD Getefix 21:59, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
There's an interview floating around somewhere saying that one word names are possible. -- Xu Davella 22:49, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
Should we put a note that 1 word names were possible in the demo? Darkshine 03:24, 27 May 2011 (UTC)

fugly... and I can't think of anything to improve it. :( (Xu Davella 01:15, 6 March 2011 (UTC))

It's not the best article, but I wouldn't exactly use that word to describe it. EiveTalk 01:19, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Might I ask where the specific character creation-related questions went? I've been searching all over for them - for instance, there was specific information on here about what the various members of the warband that you could choose between as a Charr are like, if I recall. Where did that information go? Do I have to go find preview videos from PAX to find out now? D= --76.166.187.131 06:31, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

I believe this is what you are looking for.

Yay Aion's CCS!![edit]

CSS= Character Creation system. I seen it in Youtube, and I'd love to see that here. I'll spend hours just at start making the perfect characters to role play!Yumiko ^,~ 05:46, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Yeah amazing character creation in Aion. When they say limited because of art stuff its probably along the lines of not making tiny people or absurdly distorted. Aion only had 2 races so you could make elfs, dwarves, humans (dur), santa clause and so much more. With 5 races that can look wildly different Id imagine minor amounts of sliders available for body (no mutants), much more slider focus on face, color pallets and ofcoarse special "features" like scars, hair (or leaves) and tatoos. Your face is what defines you and armor/cloths give you the rest of your style. Or perhaps you would like a norn with elf ears, asura arms and a pumpkin waisteline? ;-) Justice 05:47, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
The Charr horn/ear customization were confirmed by Kristen Perry at the San Diego Comic Con 2011 GW2 panel (link: [1]), starting at about 32:44. So I have modified the main page to reflect that... --Nicky Two Thumbs 06:54, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Alphabetically[edit]

Shouldn't the professions be in an alphabetical order just like the races in stead of Soldier-Adventurer-Scholar? bcause now you're just favoring the soldier professions... 213.49.100.249 23:34, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

No, we discussed this a few months back and decided the Soldier, Adventurer, Scholar system (2, 3, 3) was the most ideal. Trust me when I say that most people who took part in that discussion definitely put soldiers last. - Infinite - talk 13:54, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
I agree with Infinite. If there are people who will play the soldier professions more because they are the first in the list, then as far as i care, they are welcome to them, because i want the scholar and adventurer profs :) On a more serious note, I think its better to have them in (2, 3, 3) so that there is a structured order to them Thering 16:35, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
me just gunna play scholars and adventurers screw soldiers ;) --Angelkiss User IcyyyBlue Elementalist Blue.png 06:56, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Physical customization[edit]

Perhaps we could make them collapsible and or transclude them from a sub page. There will probably be many many options and, if we list them on this page in a list format, the length of the customization will wind up detracting from the rest of the article. Aqua (T|C) 22:13, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

New page IMO, perhaps going to a new page on the physical customisation per race. I'm not that bothered about trying to include all of this information on to the one page. It is already pretty big. -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 22:46, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
I think it should be on a new page as well. You could probably keep the small paragraph about it on this page and then move the specific options to a seperate one with all the known info on it. Just my thoughts. Darkshine 23:44, 9 August 2011 (UTC)
Agree with giving it its own page. --ஸ Kyoshi User Kyoshi sig2.png 00:02, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
Should it be a single page for all races or one page for each race? Aqua (T|C) 01:01, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
It depends on how much detail people are wanting to document to at this stage. Looking at gww each profession has its own page with composite images of each of the skin, hair and face choices of each campaign. I could imagine that such detail on a per race basis would be a useful and popular resource, especially pre-release with most of us unable to use the creator personally, if someone is willing to build it here. If initially we weren't collecting those visual options with screenshots a single page would cover it. -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 01:58, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) I think it'll depend on how much differs between races. Maybe we can get some of that info from Gamescom. --ஸ Kyoshi User Kyoshi sig2.png 02:01, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
I'm all for a new page for each race with composites of eac detail. It would be very popular. If we get some rough templates together it may keep track of what we do and don't have, composit-wise. here is a second pic of the customization screen, if it helps. --Moto Saxon 03:14, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
I really don't think we need a page for each race. Given the length of articles like The Movement of the World and biography, I think the options could be condensed into one article. We know that there'll be sliders, so for those options, I don't think we need images, but for the options that have more distinct presets, all we need to do is have a gallery section for each race with each of those options having an image. I guess it's too early to tell exactly, so don't jump the gun. Let's see what the customization options are like before we split up the articles.-- Shew 03:22, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
I think a single page for now, until/unless someone puts in enough content to warrant a seperate page for each. Thering 16:21, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
Concerning the sliders, I think a min and max pic would be nice. --Moto Saxon 19:37, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
Maybe Min/Mid/Max? else you only see the extremes and not the average. Thats if the sliders don't interact too much, at least, cos if there are, say, 3 sliders for the chin then its way too complex to show in non interactive pics Thering 19:39, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
Since we know very little about what will be possible in terms of customizing a character's appearance, this may already be an available feature for Guild Wars 2, but here are my thoughts. I think it would be a cool option if we could give our characters certain body flaws, in particular things like scars from old injuries, burns, and so on. In the original Guild Wars, for the most part every character had flawless features and skin. While there was some variation, for example a few of the necromancer or warrior facial models had scarring, an unscarred character was the norm. Not only does that limit individual character personality, but it isn't very realistic, especially for the front-line fighter professions. Even Rangers and magic users, who are constantly having confrontations with various game monsters, would very likely have old injuries to show for their efforts. In particular, I would like to stress scar options for female characters. In the original Guild Wars, the few scarred characters were all male, but considering that women characters are fighting beside the males, it should be a customization option for them as well. (Reset indent) I'm currently sorting through a ton of screenshots of hairstyles, hair colors, face details, etc. (When I finish getting everything extracted, I'll build the page.) The amount of information definitely warrants an individual page per race... Aqua (T|C) 22:34, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Seven Character Limit[edit]

Is it really true?? Why do you hurt us sooooooooo. Look at the first paragraph after the first picture. It says "first character of seven." --Lotus 01:20, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

He created 7 characters. It doesn't say anything more than that. Even if the limit was 7 in this beta event, that wouldn't mean anything. Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 02:10, 21 February 2012 (UTC)
True. I just found a video showing the character creation screen. It shows 5 slots and its from IGN. I hope that we get enough for 1 per profession in the release. --Lotus 03:33, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Multiple Tutorials Per Race[edit]

At the very least, Humans should have two: (1) the current one (2) another relating to Ebonhawke

Charr should have tutorials depending on whether they want to support the Flame Legion or the Iron/allied legions.

Asuran should have one for each College of the Eternal Alchemy, and perhaps another one for that unified xenophobic Asuran faction.

Sylvari should have one for the Dream, and an alternative for the Nightmare.

Norn are norn. If it were up to them, they'd all have their own individual tutorials. LOL

Oh Anet, not too late to implement this... --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.246.48.69 (talk).

The starter areas do more than just give new characters space to learn their professions--they also start off the personal stories which, at some point, need to converge around Destiny's Edge and the Elder Dragons. A part of this requires (in the current implementation) that the player character meet and work with their race's Destiny's Edge member pretty quickly--Norn, for example, fight alongside Eir in the tutorial quest.
Letting players support factions that are, if not actively evil, considered traitors to their races would force this to break down. A Fire Legion charr would be attacked on sight by any of the other three--and would exclude female characters from taking that path. The Sons of Svanir are actively supporting Jormag, one of the elder dragons that will probably end up needing to be killed sometime in the life of the story. ~Ekko (talk) 16:52, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

No impact[edit]

Where exactly is it stated that profession-specific and personality questions don't affect personal story? Mediggo 14:02, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

"The personality of your character does not affect the content you get. Decisions about your Legion (Charr) or which experiment you've done in your youth (Asura) decide how your personal story plays out. Your personality affects how NPCs interact with you, they enable you new dialogue-options but they do not change your storyline. You will not be locked out of content because of your personality." from here addresses the personality part. I'm looking for a source for the profession-specific question, but when you consider that all those questions give you something that can be immediately replaced, it wouldn't make much sense for story to be affected. --Eerie Moss 14:33, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
Since I'm pretty sure profession itself doesn't affect your personal story (barring, perhaps, some alternate dialogue), your choice of temporary gear shouldn't, either. ~Ekko (talk) 16:43, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
I haven't explicitly gone and compared two identical characters with different starting gear (from the profession-specific question), but from my experience in the beta, my choices had no impact on my personal story. Everything came from the choices in the biography questions (though the last question on each of these didn't seem to have any impact, as far as I could tell, but I'd have to check again next beta weekend; that may have been the question that determines your starting weapon). --User Jioruji Derako logo.png Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 09:28, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
Do note that the first two chapters (1-10, 11-20 in levels) of personal stories have been explored. #1 racial question kicks in straight away, #2 racial at level 10 to 20. Mediggo 09:34, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
I don't get it. What would be the point in having a different personality if all the outcomes are going to be the same? --Xu Davella 06:28, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
The First Question after character creation determines Starting Equipment/pet "The personality-oriented question affects the conversational options that NPCs provide. " Some options are closed to you and some options become available based on PERSonality Rudhraighe 06:36, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
I still hope at some point during looking for measures against the dragons our profession will have impact on where we go (there are a total of eight steps with multiple variations in story...) Mediggo 07:09, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
Here is a project on Starting Equipment By Race and Profession I still have not had any constructive comments on if it should be a page Rudhraighe 18:06, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Reset indent Unless there's evidence that race makes any difference to starting equipment (aside from ranger pet), I'd suggest having this on the profession pages. I don't know that I'd go into detail for each slot though as they only affect stats and will get replaced early and often. The only starter items with real gameplay impact are weapons, which can be indicated in the Equipment -> Weapons section. --91.74.205.113 19:58, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Why only 19 letters for names?[edit]

Maybe I missed that answer somewhere, I assume that I must have, but I've wondered that for a long time. Why will gw2 be so limited to 19 letters like gw1? Was really hoping that it would be slightly longer in gw2. I assume there must be a technical reason for 19 instead of 20 or 21? Deirdre 20:42, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

In the tests to-date, names were only allowed to be 19 characters. In GW1, part of the reason was that the name field was used as an index key in the toon database, so they made it as long as they felt comfortable with. Longer names of arbitrary length also require more overhead: it's not much for a few names, but when multiplied by a dozen toons for a million accounts, it adds up.
Both of these issues should be less important (ANet should have learned not to use the name as a key and storage space/computing power are better now). So, it might be that they chose 19 letters for nostalgia's sake, because they forgot to reconsider lengthening names, or that, like other features, it was nerfed for the beta to make it easier to test. (e.g. they could use the same profanity filter used for GW1) In short, it's somewhat arbitrary to choose 19 (2^5 - 13) instead of e.g. 51 (2^6 - 13). – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 03:09, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Character names in localized version of GW2[edit]

In the german version of the gw2 beta you could use umlauts in your name (äöü). I did not check for french accents (éàî) but I suppose they will be supported as well. Maybe someone whose first language is english could put this information in the article. --178.11.221.130 11:30, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Done. Gnarf 11:38, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
I'm playing the German version. Only the open beta, but still. So far I have not been able to use the German alphabet specials. The German and the French wiki both claim that only Latin letters are allowed. I guess this question is still open. 93.129.99.229 10:17, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
Could it be that IP178 was playing on one of the home worlds labeled as German? Or maybe the two of you were using different language settings (either in-game or on the PC). – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 10:29, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
I've tested it with umlauts on two Worlds. Worked only on [DE] labeled home world for me.Fadro 00:41, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
I used umlauts on a [DE]-world with an english localized client. --188.108.100.154 13:46, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
I am a german player using the english client and can use ÄÖÜ also on the english server Ring of Fire during character creation. It's not clientbound, nor serverbound, everyone with a german keyboard can use the Umlauts. (i tried the name Äneas Rogaldir and could create this human warrior successfully.) --217.94.59.238 05:11, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Sylvari starting area[edit]

Not that I don't believe you Shewmake, but would it be possible to see where this information was confirmed? Darkshine 12:37, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Dream of Dreams is where every sylvari's consciousness dwells before emerging from the Pale Tree. It's logical, if unconfirmed. Also, looks like we'll need a disambiguation for and the article of Dream of Dreams (location) itself, or something, when this is confirmed. Mediggo 12:43, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
It has been confirmed in an interview back in 2011-08-11 (Norwegian of origin). The tutorial is the Dream of Dreams, whereafter you wake from your pod in the Pale Tree. - Infinite - talk 12:47, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
Then the page should be edited to further reflect that, and provide a reference, if possible. :) Mediggo 12:50, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
I agree, though I believe it was once properly referenced. I'll try to find a quality reference to reflect the information. - Infinite - talk 12:52, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
EDIT: The best trustable reference I can find is from GuildMag, which summarizes a thread on Guru, which in turn summarizes a seemingly no-longer-existent interview from GameInformer. I doubt it is a valid reference because the original source is missing. I'm not sure what to do with the information (which has been accurate until further notice) with the lack of the original reference. - Infinite - talk 12:58, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Name Reservation after deletion[edit]

"If you delete a character, the name is reserved for a period of time, i.e. to allow you to recreate a character with the same name." Is there a source for this? How do we know that this is the case if we don't even know what the time period is? --ToyChristopher 03:07, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Probably an assumption that it will work as in GW1 - names are reserved for 24 hours after deletion. I don't know if there is a specific source for this functionality in GW2. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 03:12, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
Someone tested it during a BWE but I can't remember where I first read it. Here's one anecdotal post though: http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/37251-deleted-characters-and-their-names/page__view__findpost__p__1454403 --Eerie Moss 05:53, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
The poster didn't actually explain how they tested. If they deleted "X This Y Bad Z Name," I'm sure it would be available 2000 hours later, never mind less than 72 of the beta (the rest of the post involves people speculating on the same topic and reading the same text that we have).
In short, ANet hasn't said and no one has provided evidence one way or the other.
Accordingly, I'm going to change this to a note about GW1's policy and that ANet hasn't spoken about the policy for GW2. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 09:13, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
I just thought to check the history on this page and here is probably where I first saw it mentioned: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/index.php?title=Character_creation&diff=prev&oldid=233032. Unfortunately posted by an IP so no way to get clarity on testing methodology. --Eerie Moss 09:57, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
Ah, well-spotted. I'm tempted to assume good faith, but it might be easier just to ask the devs in the forum during the beta. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:23, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
Gaile Gray said on the official forums during the last beta that, if it's not implemented already, a temporary name reservation system will be in the the game by launch. She honestly didn't know if it was already in effect, but was confident they wouldn't leave it out. --Macros 11:20, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
I made the edit with that IP. I tested it myself. Please revert this. I am just not sure of the exact time when the name is freed up for another account. All I know is its greater than 4 hours and less than 30 hours. I am assuming 24, but it could be 12 or 6. --Draygo Korvan 02:40, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
On second thought, I am going to put it back in the article. If you have any questions post here. I can confirm as of BWE2 that your character names were reserved after deletion for at least a period of 4 hours, but less than 30. I didnt have time to test the 24 hour theory exactly, plus i was busy playing. I tested this in BWE1 and BWE2 and I doubt this is going to change on release. --Draygo Korvan 02:44, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
That seems like a substantiated fact (as opposed to what we originally had, which was an extremely vague hint of a promise from ANet). – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 04:27, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

(Reset indent) you should be assuming good faith though, unless you had evidence to actually remove it, it was doing no harm there. Slap the verification needed tag on it. I added it after bwe1, then noticed it getting contested on the 29th randomly with no evidence to the contrary. BWE3 is coming up in less than 2 weeks though. Hopefully we can pin an exact or close enough time on it. --Draygo Korvan 06:31, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

Accented characters in names[edit]

I was able to create a character using the letter "é" in the name, using the english interface. Perhaps all characters are allowed? Acute, grave, cedilla, umlaut and circumflex?

Managed to copy-paste several characters from the interwebs into the name field. http://i.imgur.com/T9hrp.jpg (217.123.16.6 13:56, 4 October 2012 (UTC))

Hidden time limit[edit]

WHY? Why is there a time limit? If I want to spend a whole day on creating my character I should be able to do so! It takes me a long time to come up with a character name. And I can only come up with a name AFTER I've created the character - his looks and background affects my decision. Am I the only one annoyed by this time limit? I got returned to the character selection screen several times. :( Parochy 19:51, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

You are not the only one. This brain-dead misfeature has bitten me at least a dozen times and is responsible for wasting hours of my life. I contend that it should be removed entirely, but failing that, implementing it responsibly would mean (1) telling the user about the idle timeout before it kicks in, (2) counting time the user spends adjusting character attributes as not idle, and (3) saving the character settings upon timeout and restoring them when the user returns. The game currently does none of these things. It's like a word processor or email program that continually crashes and offers no way to save a draft. --Ocelost 00:56, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
The game tries to tell you via yellow system message that "Unless you resume active play you will be kicked in X seconds" but this is obstructed by the creation screen.[2] While I understand the chatbox being hidden, I don't see why the floating message should be. Changes after character creation[edit]

"At this time, there is no way to change any of the other aspects of the character determined by the creation process. " Shouldn't this be removed/edited since they've added hairstyle/makeover kits that allow players to alter characters' appearances?--69.161.4.161 13:30, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

I removed the sentence from the exceptions, and added the note that appearance and name can be changed post-creation. BryghtShadow (talk) 22:12, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
