Havroun Grechen
“Grechen is much like Bear: huge and fierce, and so powerful the ground shakes when she charges into battle. A formidable ally.
Havroun Grechen is the norn's havroun of Bear. She is respected for her skills in combat and is viewed as a formidable ally.
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
At some point, Grechen became the havroun of Bear. She developed a rivalry with Raven's havroun, Havroun Weibe, and both were respected for their skills in traversing the Mists by Havroun Svena of Snow Leopard. Grechen was also respected for her skills in combat, described as "huge and fierce, and so powerful the ground shakes when she charges into battle".[1]
Personal story[edit]
- Forging a Legend
In 1325 AE, Grechen received a vision from Bear of an attack by the Sons of Svanir on a caravan heading through Breakneck Pass.[2] Traveling to the pass, she argued with the caravan's leader and met the Slayer of Issormir and Eir Stegalkin, who had arrived to request her aid in rescuing the trapped spirit of Havroun Solvi's apprentice Valda. After Grechen, the Slayer, and Eir had cleared an avalanche and led the caravan out of the pass, the Slayer and Eir explained the situation to Grechen, who agreed to help after she had successfully escorted the caravan to safety.
After taking the caravan to a place where they would be safe, Grechen arrived in the Great Lodge, where she traveled through a portal into the Mists along with the other two norn. Finding Valda's spirit, she recognised Valda's captor, the Son of Svanir shaman Styrr Frostblade, who fled through a portal to a Svanir camp in Frusenfell Creek. With the rescue of Valda's spirit and learning of the method the Svanir had used to trap Solvi, Grechen opted to return to Bear's lodge to notify her Speaker Alarrin of the Frost of what had transpired.
- Everyone Makes Mistakes
After Solvi had died to his wounds in the rescue attempt and Valda had been promoted to Wolf's new havroun, Grechen and her fellow havrouns attended the Big Brawl where they watched as the Slayer defeated their rival, Mikkel Toivosson.
- Victory or Death
In either late 1325 or early 1326 AE, Grechen chose to work with the Pact which was aiming to slay the Elder Dragon Zhaitan who was threatening the safety of Central Tyria with his Risen horde. She received the role of guarding Marshal Trahearne against the Risen alongside Laranthir of the Wild and the Pact Commander while Trahearne attempted to cleanse Orr from Azabe Qabar. Despite her best efforts, Grechen was overwhelmed by the attacking Risen, and her corpse was corrupted and turned into a minion of the Elder Dragon Zhaitan. After a battle with the Pact forces, the Risen form of Grechen was slain.[3] It is unknown if Grechen had an apprentice, or who her successor as havroun was.

- ^ Through the Veil
- Eir Stegalkin: Then we need a more experienced havroun. I suggest either Weibe of Raven or Grechen of Bear. They do not get along at all, so we should approach only one of them.
- Havroun Svena: Agreed. Either would have a better chance than I. Gamli and I will care for Valda until you and the Slayer return. [...]
- Havroun Svena: Grechen is much like Bear: huge and fierce, and so powerful the ground shakes when she charges into battle. A formidable ally.
- ^ Blessed of Bear
- Havroun Grechen: I had a warning from Bear. Did she also bring you here to aid me? No matter: I owe you a debt of thanks. How can I repay you?
- ^ Against the Corruption
- Trahearne: I have created a ritual that might cleanse the dragon's corruption. If it succeeds, this mission could be a turning point in the war.
- Trahearne: My research suggests that the Royal Tombs were deeply sacred. They may still hold the connection I need to restore the land with Orr's fading life force.
- Trahearne: If the dragon discovers our attempt, he'll try to stop us. Havroun, you and Laranthir will defend the mouth of the tomb. Give us all the time you can.
- Havroun Grechen: We will, Marshal Trahearne. By the Bear, I swear we'll hold the line—or die trying. [...]
- Laranthir of the Wild: Grechen! No, not Grechen...only her tortured remains. Commander, we must put her to rest.
