Ghost of Captain Grumby is a ghost found near the old mursaat fortress in Ember Bay. He helps the Pact Commander get to the last dwarven device during Old Foes, Old Ghosts.
In life, Grumby was a ship captain that was hired by the White Mantle, but after the death of their inner council he aided the White Mantle's enemies across the waters of the Rings of Fire, letting them leave Perdition Rock to access a mursaat-stronghold. Shortly afterwards, he was found and sacrificed upon a Bloodstone, but his soul was freed shortly after when the Door of Komalie was opened.

Dialogue[edit]
- Ahoy, there! I'm Captain Grumby. Not that I am proud of it, but the Mantle pay me good coin to keep my mouth shut and my boat docked unless they say otherwise.
- The Mantle pay you?
- They did, until they betrayed me and got me stuck here like this. Hey, you a friend of these researchers roaming around here? They're getting killed by the local predators. You should do something.
- What do you want me to do?
- Tear them apart! Not the researchers. The Jade Constructs and Destroyers. Oh, and if you're feeling feisty, take out a few of those mursaat defense devices. They're unforgiving!
- Thanks for the information. Can I ask you something else?
- I'll see what I can do.
- They pay you to what?
- Did I say "pay". They haven't actually done anything for me in a very long time. I'm stuck here like all the other lost souls of the Fire Islands, waiting for the Primordus to consume us.
- Primordus?
- Can't you feel the temperature rising here? So many Destroyers are crawling up from the depths. More than ever. It's like watching the rats come out of hiding when your ship's sprung a leak. Gahh.
- Except they're not fleeing anything.
- No. They're eating everything. And when Primordus gets here, it will eat the rest of us. Then, it'll be good-bye, Grumby. Can't say as I'd mind a bit of rest.
- Thanks for the information. Can I ask you something else?
- We're trying to keep that from happening. Good-bye, Grumby.
- What do you know about this place?
- A lot. There's a reason I'm stuck here for all of eternity. The White Mantle brought me here when they decided I'd outlived my usefulness, and they sacrificed me to their gods, the mursaat.
- When was that?
- Shortly before someone opened the door to the Realm of Torment and let a bunch of evil creatures out. We were trapped until then.
- How did they trap you?
- It's complicated. All you need to know is that the mursaat and the White Mantle are slavers of souls. It took an act of godly proportions to stop them. This fortress was the seat of their power.
- Why here of all places? It's so inhospitable.
- They came here to keep an eye on the door to the Realm of Torment. A prophesy had predicted the end of the mursaat at the hand of something from beyond the door. It came true.
- What happened?
- The mursaat were wiped out by the forces of good. Without their gods, the White Mantle all died or moved on. They left the mursaat defenses in place because they didn't know how to turn them off.
- Thanks for the information. Can I ask you something else?
- Interesting, but I need to go.
- Interesting, but I need to go.
- If Piece of Damaged Ship is in the player's inventory:
- Do you know what this piece of wood I found on the beach is from?
- By the five gods, that's a piece of my old ship! I haven't seen one of those in centuries. Odd request, but... can I have it? It reminds me of... better times.
- I appreciate you helping me out. Please, take it.
- I think I'll hang on to it for now. Sorry, captain.
- Upon second turn in:
- I found more debris and thought you'd like it, Captain.
- Are you sure? I'd really appreciate it. These pieces remind me of the days before I conspired with the White Mantle, before they ruined my life. What I'd give to feel the Krytan wind again.
- It's the least I can do. I insist.
- I think I'll hang on to it for now. Sorry, captain.
- Upon third and fourth turn in:
- I found more debris and thought you'd like it, Captain.
- Thank you, friend. It may sound weird that I'm comforted by these broken mementos from my past, but I'd appreciate it if you brought more.
- If I see more, I'll bring them your way!
- I think I'll hang on to it for now. Sorry, captain.
- Upon fifth turn in:
- I found more debris and thought you'd like it, Captain.
- It's great to see you again! I'll gladly accept the piece, if you don't mind. They're really keeping my spirits up in this gods-forsaken place - no pun intended.
- Because you're a ghost. Hah. Anyway, here you go!
- I think I'll hang on to it for now. Sorry, captain.
- Upon sixth turn in:
- I found more debris and thought you'd like it, Captain.
- My collection is growing quite impressive, thanks to you. Always room for more, though. Maybe someday I'll have enough to build a ship to take me home.
- Happy to help. I hope you find a nice place to put this one!
- I think I'll hang on to it for now. Sorry, captain.
- Upon seventh turn in:
- I found more debris and thought you'd like it, Captain.
- Thank you for your kindness. In a place where death, destruction, fire, and brimstone are commonplace, you've helped this old man feel less alone.
- It's my pleasure. Thank you, Captain Grumby.
- Actually, I should hang on to this. Sorry.
- Upon turning in any more pieces after the achievement is complete:
- I found more debris and thought you'd like it, Captain.
- Always appreciated, friend. Please take care of yourself around these parts. You never know what will jump out and try to devour your soul. I speak from experience.
- Here's the token. Thanks for the advice!
- I think I'll hang on to it for now. Sorry, captain.
- Never mind.
