Central Tyria is a collective name for several geographical regions in the western part of the supercontinent of Tyria. The term is commonly used to refer to the explorable zones and game content that were available at the release of Guild Wars 2. These zones and game systems are often colloquially referred to as "core maps" and "core game", respectively.

"Central Tyria" is a newer term, and prior to the launch of the first expansion, Heart of Thorns, this area was mostly synonymous with the continent of Tyria. Since then, new regions of Tyria have been explored in the game, including Heart of Maguuma and Elona. In order to distinguish them, the term "Central Tyria" began to be used by some NPCs[1] and in various game mechanics, most notably to categorize regional mastery tracks.

Map-completing all original zones in Central Tyria is called World completion. It is tied to both account-wide Been There, Done That achievement and the Gifts of Exploration, items earned individually by each character. Gifts of Exploration are used for crafting the first generation legendary weapons.

List of regions[edit]

Since the launch of original Guild Wars 2, new explorable zones were added to the Central Tyria regions in the expansions and Living World episodes. While geographically part of Central Tyria, these maps are only accessible through their respective releases.

Ascalon

Once a great human kingdom, Ascalon was since retaken by the charr, scorched by the Searing and cursed by the Foefire, leaving a brown land and a human ghost army behind. The Stronghold of Ebonhawke and the Iron Legion capital Black Citadel can be found here. The Dragonbrand, caused by the Elder Dragon Kralkatorrik's flight to the Crystal Desert, scars the land in the eastern Ascalon.

Kryta

Kryta is a lush green area rich with fertile soil located in the central-western area of the continent. The last remaining human kingdom on Tyria, ruled by Queen Jennah, features the grand cities of Divinity's Reach and Lion's Arch. Despite this, its countryside is raided by marauding centaurs, while refugees come here from all over the known world.

Maguuma Jungle

The Maguuma Jungle is a tropical region of lush vegetation that encompasses the area from the Tarnished Coast to the Steamspur Mountains. It is a home to many species like asura, sylvari, skritt, and hylek, as well a wide variety of insects and living plants.

Maguuma Wastes

Maguuma Wastes is an arid land in the north-western part of the Maguuma Jungle. The region has been suffering from incursions of the Mordrem from the nearby Heart of Maguuma region.

Ruins of Orr

Orr was originally a human kingdom and the residence of their gods in the ancient city of Arah. The Orrian peninsula has sunk as a result of the Cataclysm and subsequently re-emerged with the rising of the Elder Dragon Zhaitan, whose Risen swarm the region to this day.

Shiverpeak Mountains

Shiverpeak Mountains is a giant mountain range running north to south between Ascalon and Kryta. Current home of the norn, who reside in the mighty settlement of Hoelbrak, and the kodan after being driven from the north by the Elder Dragon Jormag. The mountains hold their share of dangers for those daring to traverse them, ranging from the aggressive dredge to the hulking jotun.
