Call Target, Alert Target, and Set Personal Target is a family of keybind abilities in Control Options that allow the player to put a marker on their currently targeted character or interactable object. If the player is in a party or squad, then "Call Target" and "Alert Target" markers will also be visible to other party or subgroup members.

If a party member calls a new target then the previously called target will no longer be marked. If these keybinds are used without selecting a target first, the game will mark the character or object closest to the middle of the screen, if any are in range.

Call Target[edit]

Pressing "Call Target" keybind ( Ctrl+T or Ctrl+Left Click by default) puts a large red target reticle above the current target. Besides visual function, it has an additional interaction through the "Take Target" keybind ( T by default), allowing party/subgroup members to automatically take the marked character or object as the target for their skills.

"Call Target" allows parties to quickly highlight an important target when numerous other enemies are present, or, for example, when the target Mesmer in the opposing PvP team creates clones of themselves. Additonally, some enemy NPCs as well as player characters in PvP can break targeting either through Stealth.png Stealth effect or other abilities. Call Target helps quickly point the allies to the enemy once it is found and available for targeting again.

Alert Target[edit]

"Alert Target" is a keybind ability (Shift+T by default) that plays a sound alert and a visual effect above the targeted character, visible to the party or subgroup members. The floating marker icon varies depending on the state of the target: Alive Ally, Alive Enemy, Downed Ally, and Downed Enemy.

While in a party or squad, the following messages will be displayed in the party channel of the chat panel:

  • <Character Name> has targeted <Target Ally Name> for assistance. (if target is alive ally)
  • <Character Name> has targeted <Target Enemy Name> for attacking. (if target is alive enemy)
  • <Character Name> has targeted <Target Ally Name> for resurrection. (if target is downed or defeated ally)
  • <Character Name> has targeted <Target Enemy Name> for finishing. (if target is downed enemy)

Set Personal Target[edit]

Pressing "Set Personal Target" keybind (unassigned by default) puts an orange reticle marker above the currently targeted character or object, visible only to the player who used it. The marker remains if another target is selected, and pressing "Take Personal Target" keybind re-targets the originally marked foe. It can be used to "store" the target for future use and then quickly re-acquire it when needed.

"Set Personal Target" can be used as a personal marker for any purposes, for example, to highlight another player's character in a large squad to follow and coordinate with.

Character shouts[edit]

When calling a target, player characters will occasionally shout out one of the following lines, depending on their race and gender. A player cannot hear their own character's call.

Male Female

Trivia[edit]

  • An update in the second half of 2013 changed the functionality of "Call Target", allowing it to be used by a player who is not in a party. Previously, players needed to invite an off-line player to their party so they could use the "Call Target" function when playing solo.
  • "Alert Target" was introduced in the September 20, 2016 update.
  • "Set Personal Target" was introduced in the November 30, 2021 update.
