Manual of Style: Abbreviations[edit]
Also wiki style doesn't mention abbreviations. Do we use them, or type them out? AoE vs area-of-effect or CC and crowd-control. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Horus-ra (talk) at 16:04, 16 June 2018 (UTC).
- You use this page just like you did, though you should remember to use four tildes,

, to sign your name. - As for abbreviations, context is important. If you're typing out a paragraph of information, you cannot go wrong with the long-hand form. If you're working within a table, you'll probably want to use the short-hand. Additionally, the use of interlinks can help direct people who are unfamiliar with the abbreviations to pages which explain them. For example:

- Oh right, thank you! Trying to get familiar with how the wiki works, and boy is it complicated, so I can prepare to copy-edit/revamp some of the raid walkthrough pages since there's a lot of inconsistent grammar rules throughout, for example 45 seconds vs 45s or using '~' vs roughly/approximately. Should I also work to eliminate those abbreviations in those pages as well? Thoughts on HP vs health? As a very long time raider I want to impart some of my knowledge and correct misinformation and precise attack patterns/behaviours but not sure how to approach it.Horus-ra (talk) 16:36, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
- Iterative projects like the wiki tend to suffer from disjointed tones and styles due to relying on multiple contributors. If your goal is to unify the text, it's appreciated.
- I prefer clarity over obfuscation in long-form text, so I would lean towards health over HP and 45 seconds over 45s, unless you're dealing with bullet points or have already introduced the style to the reader.
- As for an approach to the guide, make sure to focus on strategies and not tactics. Strategies are general ideas on how to handle challenges that the raids present (e.g. spread out during this phase; avoid letting the NPC's skill complete), while tactics are specific techniques which are prone to meta changes (e.g. have your chrono use skills x,y, and z in rotation; rez your druid immediately if they go down).
- Lastly, don't worry about perfection. As I said at the start, this wiki is an iterative process. We constantly build upon it, and others will have different ideas on how things should be done. As noted at the bottom of the edit screen, your text may be "edited mercilessly" ; ). G R E E N E R 17:11, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
