Event dialogue documentation

GW2W:PR/EVENTDIALOGUE Did you know that before the Cataclysm, the purpose of the Plaza of Lights PoI in Orr was to act as the site for a festival in honour of King Doric? We learn about it in the event Escort Historian Vermoth to the Altar of Tempests, which was added to the game on release in 2012, but you could be forgiven if you didn't know that - as the dialogue in which we learn it wasn't added to the Wiki until 2017. When the event page was initially created, the Dialogue section was omitted, presumably because the editor who added it missed some or all of the dialogue or just didn't want to document it. Has this happened with other events? Is there content that has gone undocumented for half a decade, and might potentially never be documented if we aren't careful? It's impossible to know how much dialogue we've missed which is what this project is for.

Roadmap

 1. Go through every event page on the Wiki. Add a Dialogue section with a event template to that page, if none already exists. A bot could do this.
 2. Create a list of all event pages in Category:Event articles with stub sections where the event is in the Dialogue section to tell us which events to include on our list.
 3. Go through every event in the game, and where dialogue is missing, add it to the Wiki. If there is no dialogue, remove the section, although it is anticipated that there will be few events where this is the case. Remember to add Wikilinks to any proper nouns that haven't already been mentioned on the page, even (or especially) if it's a red link - it'll add the page to Special:Wantedpages and help identify gaps in the Wiki's coverage. Remember that any dialogue associated with a dynamic event should be added to that event's page rather than to the area's ambient dialogue section.

Tasks

 1. Discuss viability of the project and how it might be accomplished on the talk page.

Ambient dialogue documentation

GW2W:PR/AMBIENTDIALOGUE Inspired by Project Eavesdrop. There's an incredible volume of lore that has gone undocumented on the Wiki because when Area pages were created, the "Ambient dialogue" section was omitted for one reason or another. There is now a comment on the formatting guideline for area pages to not remove the section unless it is certain that no dialogue exists for that area, but that wasn't added until Living World Season 2. For that reason we should prioritise areas in Central Tyria. Otherwise, there is lore that we might potentially end up never documenting.

Roadmap

 1. Go through every area page on the Wiki. Add an "Ambient dialogue" section with a location template to that page, if none already exists. A bot could do this.
 2. Create a list of all pages in Category:Location articles with stub sections where the location is in the "Ambient dialogue" section, ideally dynamically using some sort of Wiki magic. If it makes it easier, we could create a new template instead of location to tell us which events to include on our list.
 3. Go through every area in the game, and where dialogue is missing, add it to the Wiki. If there is no dialogue, remove the section, although it is anticipated that there will be few areas where this is the case. Remember to add Wikilinks to any proper nouns that haven't already been mentioned on the page, even (or especially) if it's a red link - it'll add the page to Special:Wantedpages and help identify gaps in the Wiki's coverage.

Lore article verifiability

GW2W:PR/LOREREFS It was disappointing to read this thread on the GW2 subreddit recently. Choice quotes include: "Well the wiki is written by the players mostly, I'd trust this article more personally... Especially given the fact that the wiki doesn't link to its sources of informations.", "But yeah, I'd really like to see what certain users on the wiki are citing when they write up stories about the lore.", "Discussing with wiki people never leads to an agreement.", "Devs mightve wanted to leave Tyria ambiguous but players tend to interprete things in the way they want to, so wiki articles can be misleading.". As far as lore is concerned, the Wiki is no longer considered a reliable source of information as far as lore is concerned. This seems to stem from the perception that lore editors misinterpret sources of information and then edit the Wiki to reflect that misinterpretation. We can fix this, as well as help make the Wiki accessible for editors who normally feel intimidated by the perception that you are required to keep an encyclopaedia of knowledge in your head in order to edit lore articles, by adding references in line with established practices and processes.

Roadmap

 1. Compile a list of lore articles on the Wiki. This might also include articles on NPC's with lots of story, such as Scarlet Briar, race pages such as tengu, and organisation pages, such as Flame Legion. Category:Lore might also be a useful guide.
 2. List articles in order of priority. Articles on subjects like Elder Dragons and magic are obviously more fundamental to the lore, however in the discussion linked below User:Erasculio states that they have seen a lot of fan-fiction on the Wiki, so it might be worth investigating that first.
 3. Add references in line with the process decided on Guild Wars 2 Wiki:References.

Tasks

 1. Wait for consensus to be reached on a referencing practice (discussion ongoing at Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Community portal#The wiki has a credibility and accessibility problem when it comes to lore).
 2. Discuss viability of the project and how it might be accomplished on the talk page.
