- Backstory: Relius's life should have ended before it had ever begun. His family raised him in a small hut near the Bloodstone Caves in the Shiverpeaks, surviving through trade, hunting, and their own strength. At the age of five, Relius barely escaped with his life when his tiny home was raided unprovoked by a Charr warband. Instead of dying in the wilds of the Shiverpeaks, Relius was taken in by a wild bear as if he were one of her own children. Relius lived in the wilds for a decade, hunting, fishing, and gathering alongside his bestial brethren. Around his 15th birthday, however, he discovered a Norn huntsman. Seeking to slay his mother for her pelt, the man didn’t realize that her “cub” was nearby. Furious, and still very much a wild animal, Relius attacked the man, but was unable to defeat the trained hunter’s weapon with his bare hands. He was knocked unconscious, but his actions saved his mother’s life. The hunter, intrigued by this bear-boy, spared his life and dragged him to Hoelbrak. Alarrin of the Frostborn met with the child and, upon gazing into his eyes, saw a spirit worth teaching. Immediately, Relius was made apprentice to the havroun, learning the ways of the Norn and the Bear. During this time, Relius took interest in the methods of war. He delighted in the fight, and became much like other Norn in his lust for battle. Worried that Relius’ spiritual calling would be superseded by desire for the hunt, Alarrin sent him on a mission designed to turn him from the path of war. His master sent him back to his birthplace near the Bloodstone caves, his task to learn the truth of what had happened to his parents. Although in a state of disrepair, his home had not been razed. Searching for clues, and then asking about his family in the closest encampments—which were at least a week’s journey away—Relius finally pieced together what had happened. His mother, for a reason he hadn’t been able to uncover, had taken an unnatural interest in the Bloodstones and had given up a warrior’s life in order to study them. The Charr had most likely come because they wanted the knowledge she had about the Bloodstones. Charr are allowed to roam freely in the Shiverpeaks as a whole, running the risk of being individually cut down by Norn who sought a challenge. It was seen as a sign of weakness that Relius’ mother and father couldn’t protect their homes, and it surprised him to learn that even the names of the Charr responsible were known by Norn who had let them pass. Alarrin had not foreseen this outcome, and Relius vowed revenge. The days of learning to become Bear’s speaker were behind him. And yet, even as he put himself through the motions of preparing to leave, Relius could not find it within himself to track and slay each of the Charr. As much as he hated them for their crime, he felt like Bear wanted more from him than revenge. His strength was worth more than that. Even as his took what he believed to be his final steps from Hoelbrak, Relius knew that he could not continue his quest. He returned to Alarrin, knowing that a path of revenge would leave him hollow. He asked instead for guidance—he could not stay and become Havroun, but that did not mean he could not share his strength with those that needed it. It was then that Alarrin pointed him to the Elder Dragons, saying that if he wished to protect his fellow’s lives, they would have to be halted. And so Relius set out once again, this time given the name Lightseeker, as he searches for the ways to defeat the Dragons.
