Text[edit]
The torn pages here are listed as encountered from the entrance of the raid wing.
- Perched on a cave mushroom
- Someone tore this dirty sheet of parchment, so only a portion of it is legible. The handwriting is precise and neat, in sharp contrast to the burn marks and blood stains.
- Read it.
- "We've been here for three days and nights, and the fanatics have finally revealed their plans for us. We're to work for them, cook, wash their clothes, scrape their boots."
- Read on.
- "More than half of us have been dragged away, especially those who fight, resist, or curse them. We believe they've been murdered, and so we remain stoic in the face of this abuse."
- Read on.
- "The brigands treat us like work animals, only kept alive so long as we earn our feed. They believe, it seems, that a higher power dictates their lack of mercy. They believe themselves superior."
- The writing ends on a torn edge.
- Near where the ruined path begins
- A ragged piece of parchment bearing the clipped writings of a scholarly individual.
- Read it.
- "For a week now I've been listening to these brigands when they didn't think I could hear them. They dismiss me as a threat perhaps because of my advanced age."
- Read on.
- "Based on what they've said, I believe they have agents in Divinity's Reach and elsewhere, working behind the scenes to influence those in power. Their corruption is far spread."
- Read on.
- "They speak of Kryta as though it were stolen from them. Logic tells me that their intended outcome is to usurp the throne. More boldly, they speak of power as if it were the trophy they seek."
- The writing ends on a torn edge.
- The successive pages will read as follows until the raid wing has been cleared:
- This piece of parchment has been burned, torn, rained on, and generally abused. The words on it are barely legible. You don't have time to read it now.
- I may come back to this after we've completed the mission.
- Just beyond the ruined threshold
- This piece of parchment is perhaps the least damaged of all.
- Read it.
- "I've been observing the White Mantle for weeks now, and I fear they're beginning to notice. I approached a group today and overheard their plans."
- Read on.
- "They truly believe that the people they're sacrificing are fueling their magic, and they say something big is about to happen."
- Read on.
- "They said, and I quote, 'We will once again rule Kryta when he gets here.' I don't know who 'he' is. If I live long enough, I'll do my best to..."
- The writing ends on a torn edge.
- Among violet forget-me-nots
- Crumpled and muddy, this sheet of parchment is only partially legible.
- Read it.
- "...can now imagine what my ancestors experienced...long ago when the White Mantle invaded...kingdom and homes. My appreciation of Queen...benevolence grows with each atrocity..."
- Read on.
- "...seduced by the promise of power. I've seen no sign they're back other than the Mantle's fanaticism... Something has stirred their passions. They've waited in the shadows, and now..."
- Read on.
- "... magic of their inquisitor. He has more...than any one...should have. It radiates when he...to the camp seeking new victims. I begin to fear not just for us, but for Kryta—and all of Tyria."
- The writing ends on a torn edge.
- At the tenth column
- Stained with splatters of dried blood, this piece of parchment tells a tale even without reading the words inscribed on it."
- Read it.
- "... for two weeks. I've tried to maintain a scholarly approach to these writings, but today I find I'm too distressed to do so. My dear wife's best friend was taken up the hill. Her screams..."
- Read on.
- "I don't know what was worse...her screams, or...how abruptly they ended."
- The writing ends on a torn edge.
- At the crumbling well
- The ruined sheet has smeared writing upon it. It says, "I have not yet told my fellow unfortunates what I know. The name 'White Mantle' would terrify them even more than the brigands' threats."
- Read on.
- "I've combed my memory for what I know about the White Mantle. It was a dark time in Krytan history. I was taught that they took over the kingdom at a time when it was particularly vulnerable."
- Read on.
- "Their fanatical worship of false gods, the Mursaat, made them ruthless. Many Krytans died during their reign of terror, some sacrificed during macabre rituals to..."
- The writing ends on a torn edge.
- On boxes stacked
- Much of this piece of parchment has been damaged by water, the ink smeared and faded."
- Read it.
- "... shocked. I heard two whispered words today that made my blood run cold: 'White Mantle.' I pretended not to hear, or I'm sure I'd be..."
- The writing ends there.
